but I’d never thought I’d be one of them,” she says. Eleanor was already a member of wedding planning website TheKnot.com when she noticed its annual contest for Valentine’s Day nuptials atop the Empire State Building. “I thought, ‘How cool would it be if we won?’ ” she says. “Our story is far from being common, so I entered it, and a month later I got the call from New York.”

The couple flew out from Glendale, Calif., to say “I do” in front of a few close family members and friends, and plan to hold a reception back at home. It was the first time in New York for Eleanor and Vahagn and at the ceremony they were full of plans for their time in the city. “After the wedding, we’d love to go to Times Square,” said Eleanor, “and re-create the famous sailor kiss photographed on V-J Day.” Amy He

“A MESMERIZING MESMERIZING MIND-BENDER.”

Californians Eleanor and Vahagn’s romance started before either of them had even taken their SATs. The two went to the same elementary school and first met in the sixth grade. “We went to junior high and high school together, but it wasn’t until later did we start to notice each other,” Eleanor recalls. The two dated briefly in their sophomore year of high school before breaking things off and losing contact. It wasn’t until almost 10 years later that Eleanor and Vahagn, both 27, reconnected through Facebook. Despite all the time that had passed, Eleanor, a scheduler at Bryan Exhaust Service, and Vahagn, a quality assurance tester for THQ Inc., still felt a spark. The couple dated for a year before Vahagn proposed last July. “We bought the ring together,” says Eleanor, “but he was going to give me the ring when he wanted to.” Funny then, that she ended up surprised when Vahagn randomly proposed one hot summer day. “You always read about girls being speechless when they get proposed to,

Jennifer Herring & Patrick Davenport Jennifer and Patrick, both 28, met at the ice cream shop where she worked. It was back when they were in high school in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Patrick, hoping to get a free cone, visited the store with a friend. The pair didn’t get to talk, but they felt an immediate attraction. They started to date after their high school graduation, and attended the same college. “During our first semester, we had a biology class together,” says Jennifer, a bank manager. “Pat and I would hang out almost every day after school and that’s how we really began to find out more about each other.”

Patrick soon realized she was the one. “I couldn’t imagine living my life without her,” he says. “So I knew what I had to do.” The two, who live in Nashville, were planning to celebrate New Year’s Eve 2009 with friends in the Big Apple, and Patrick wanted to make the trip even more special. Patrick, now a pharmacy student at Lipscomb University, picked up a family heirloom ring from his mother and kept everyone in the dark about his surprise. “Pat was waiting for the right moment,” Jennifer says. “It wasn’t until our last day in New York that he proposed on top of the Empire State Building.”

The couple made it up to the deck and, while taking in the view, he popped the question with a poem. “He started taking deep breaths and at that point, I knew he was nervous about something,” says Jennifer. Patrick recited, “You know that I love you / And you’re the only girl for me / So my little Jen / will you marry me?” It seemed only appropriate, then, that the pair returned to the same spot as winners of TheKnot.com’s annual contest. They held a reception at midtown eatery Fagiolini with friends and family. Once summer arrives and Patrick gets a break, the two will escape to Hawaii for their honeymoon. Ji Hyun Park
