2 PACIFIC NORTHWEST ECONOMIC CONFERENCE 2011

CONCEPT

PNEC 2011 is a unique event where people from British Columbia, and the rest of the Pacific Northwest region including that of Washington and Oregon come together to discuss: • Common economic issues facing the Pacific Northwestern region • The strengths and weaknesses of the region’s developing and thriving industries such as technology and tourism • Benefits and differences of the sociology and geography of the Pacific Northwest compared to other regions. The Conference invites leading experts from corporations, non-government organizations and academia to speak about how our region can leverage its unique characteristics to fully participate in the global economy, while harnessing stronger relationships between the people of this region, especially the students, who will be the future minds to continue building this region economically and socially.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of PNEC’s existence is to educate students about the behaviour of the economy in the Pacific Northwestern region. Speakers are invited to discuss topics that are of value and interest to the delegates. Defining the behaviour of the economy can be looked as: • How to maintain a business in this current condition and knowing how and when to forecast the next appropriate move • Understanding the purpose of the government and what importance it serves to conducting an effective and thriving economy • Discovering the benefits and pitfalls of the geography that exists in this region and how to leverage it • Comparing and contrasting this region to another region with consideration of social factors and how that affects an economy The economy is a very broad topic to cover. By customizing the workshops to what the delegates want to see and hear through our registration process, PNEC will have a better understanding of how to create a meaningful and qualitative experience.

VISION

The resonating accomplishments that PNEC wishes to achieve would be captured in these three goals: 1. To foster a strong and cohesive relationship amongst top universities of the Pacific Northwest region • Builds an effective communication channel that serves as a launch pad for innovative minds to come together and build the economy 2. To generate exposure for new and accomplished organizations while allowing the opportunity for students to network with delegates and industry professionals • Connects student delegates with potential employers through integrated networking sessions • Serves as a unified experience for delegates and professionals from across the border to collaborate in setting prospects and developing business solutions 3. To create awareness of unrealized potential that each area has to contribute to this developing region • Allows delegates and professionals to share strategies that will help strengthen the region as a whole • To uncover the potential opportunity of the surrounding areas and to work towards establishing the Pacific Northwest as a respected and exemplary region

APPROACH

Unlike traditional student-run conferences, where professionals are invited to speak and students listen, PNEC 2011 will create a unique and interactive environment allowing delegates to collaborate with professionals from a span of diverse industries. Facilitated breakout sessions will aid in achieving this purpose. During the registration process, delegates will complete a survey asking them to provide detailed information concerning their interests and the topics that they wish to engage in discussion. This information will be used to centralize the workshops around the interests of the delegates. Networking events will be organized using the same approach, allowing delegates to interact with other delegates and professionals of different backgrounds from across the border.

OUTLOOK

To fulfill the mandate of PNEC, we envision the conference to be hosted by the different cities that compose the Pacific Northwestern region. Every host city will have the chance to host the conference at least once, allowing delegates to witness the opportunities of the Pacific Northwest in its entirety. With 2011 being PNEC’s second year in Vancouver, British Columbia, the PNEC 2011 Organizing Committee is working to build a relationship with the University of Washington so the legacy may be passed on for 2012. By bringing together delegates and industry professionals from across the region, we hope to redefine the ever-changing economy of the Pacific Northwest.
