這一本作品集展示了我2007至2011年的設計作品,其中包含了 我身為設計系學生時的學校作品、我身為FCNY以及其他許多機

構實習生時為非盈利機構所設計的宣傳作品、我任職於設計工作 室時以平面設計師身份所設計的作品、自由接案時的設計企畫、 以及非常貼近於自我的私人作品。這本作品集不只展現了我身為 設計師的能力與變化性,它更是一本記錄了我個人與藝術路程上 成長的回憶錄。當然它除了是一本陳列作品的書籍,它本身也是 一個平面設計作品,當我設計這本書時許多當中的技法與風格反 射出了我個人的性格與文化背景。作品集裡除了設計圖片外也有 大量的文字來解釋作品中的細節與靈感。這是一本含有雙語文字 的作品集: 中文與英文,而目的不只是提供給兩國語言讀者,更

是為表示出我雙語的文化背景,中文是我的母語而英文是我的第

二語言。我出生於臺灣而在14歲時搬去美國紐約接受高中與大學

的教育,我在紐約待了8年之久,我接受設計相關教育時也就是在 那段日子裡,而同時擁有東方及西方教育強烈的影響的我的設計 風格。在這本作品集裡中文文字一直會擺在英文文字之前,但大 方向的類別標題卻是只使用英文,這樣的文字排列方式是我對於

以及紐約-那個教了我所有我知道關於設計方面知識的城市。請將 這本作品集看作為一本幾乎自傳的書籍、展現並介紹我身為藝術 家的過去;但同時也請將它看作為一本前傳、大膽預示著我將來 身為平面設計師的所有可能性。


This portfolio showcases design works I’ve done from the year of 2007 to 2011. It contains projects I did as a design student in college, advertising designs for nonprofit organizations I did as a design intern for FCNY among many other internships, design works I did when I was working as a junior graphic designer in a design studio, cases I took on as a freelance graphic designer, and last but not least personal projects that are very close to heart. It is not only a portfolio that displays my abilities and diversities as a designer; it is also a depiction of my growth as an artist and as an individual. This publication can also be considered as a piece of design work itself; I designed the portfolio in ways that reflect my personality and cultural background. There is a significant amount of text that explains the works in details and paragraphs that express my inspirations behind them. It is a bilingual publication: Chinese and English. Not so surprisingly I as an individual am also bilingual, Chinese is my mother language and English is my second language. I was born and raised in Taiwan until I was 14, then I moved to New York for high school and college. I spent 8 years in New York; therefore I received my design education while I was there. Having both Eastern and Western educational experiences influenced my designs significantly. In this portfolio Chinese text is always placed before English text, yet broader information like category titles are in English only. This text treatment is my homage to both Taiwan: the place that always comes first in my heart, and to New York: the place that taught me everything I know about design. Consider this as an autobiographical piece that shows you a glimpse of me as an artist in the past, yet also as an appetizing piece for what’s to come in the future for me as a graphic designer.

Design Concepts 這個學校練習作業是為一家已有店名的餐廳進行品 牌形象規劃,規劃內容包括企業標示、名片、行銷 包裝等。此餐廳目標販售食物為泰國料理。

This school assignment was to brand a restaurant with given name. However we can choose the type of the restaurant and decide the mood of the restaurant on our own. “The Cutting Board” that I decided to do is a Thai food restaurant that is exotic and tropical. We have to design the logo, the business card, as well as the shopping bad and takeout box.

This package design is for the 2009 tissue box design competition held by famous Chinese tissue company Rou Qing. This particular design is to express the idea of light and soft. When one takes a tissue from this box, one also lifts the little figure that is holding on to the tissue.

Mrs. Tam is a client at BCNA (Business Center for New Americans), she owns a vegetables vendor at Canal Street. As a intern of FCNY (Fund for the City of New York) I was assigned to design the banner for Mrs. Tam’s vegetable vendor named “Tam’s Vegetables”. During the New York’s immigrant week Mrs. Tam was honored as a successful business woman from BCNA and the event was reported by the American Chinese newspaper “World’s Journal” (Photo on the left).

There is a Chinese phrase “Do not raise fish in the bottom of your cup”. It is a phrase used when people are drinking alcohol and it means that one’s cup should either be full or empty, one should not left a little alcohol in the cup as if one is trying to foster a fish in the cup. In this double sided coaster there is a fish on one side and if one puts a glass on top of it one would see a fish on the bottom of the glass. On the other side of the coaster is the Chinese word for “bottom” on a dried up background. Both sides simply remind the drinker: Fill it up!

This school assignment is to design the package design for a short story “Signs and Symbols” by Vladimir Nabokov. It does not have to be in the traditional book form, it can be in any shape. I decided to design this story book in a unique form. I was inspired by one of the very important monuments in this story, which is when the couple opens the umbrella. Therefore when the viewers open this book package, they need to first open the fabric wrapped around the book as if they are opening an umbrella. This “book” does not open like a regular book as well. It would expend into five parts and the whole book is in this abstract triangular shape that resembles an opening umbrella.

This is a school assignment for the art department at Queens College. The assignment is to design something that informs the student on what is graphic design and provide information about the graphic design major requirements/courses. I decided to design a small booklet that would fit into one’s pocket. When the viewers open the book, they would see different combinations of the words: Deceive, Define, and Design. The goal of this booklet is to provide as much information as possible and also shows the varieties and the endless possibilities of graphic design.

I titled this book UNFOLD because I believe in the interaction between the artist and the viewer. In my eyes a piece of design is not finished until it is shown to its viewer and let the viewer discover the concept and purpose behind this design. The process of folding and unfolding a design to reveal more information is a simple way to make the viewer engaged and be a participant in the interaction. This method may seem childish or simple, but the idea of the artist folding a piece of design to hide information for the viewer to unfold really becomes a symbolic procedure for why artist create artworks. The word “unfold” in this book is not only an action that the viewer has to perform in order to see the whole design, but metaphorically speaking there are many pieces of design that contains hidden messages or morals waiting for the viewer to “unfold”.

An illustration book dedicated to Time. Using circulation and eternity as inspirations, created 5 Words and 2 Fragments. Passages began with the simple act of listening to music to pass time, transformed and progressed into a piece completed devoted to time. Trying to pass time, trying to speed up time, trying to turn back time… A piece that praised time yet begged time. I offer this piece to the year of 2009 and all the years before it. Due to all the traceable and imperceptible changes that occurred during these years, I will never be the same again.

在我身為平面設計系大學生的第三年我其中一堂設計課

During my third year as a graphic design student in college, one of my design classes invited a guest critic to come comment on our works we have done during the semester. The critic reviewed my works carefully and said “You have intelligence and humor in your works, try not to lose that”. It was not only a gratifying compliment; it has also become the motto for how I design. I have always aimed to create smart designs that send messages to the viewer but at the same time I think a good graphic design piece should not only please the eyes but it should please the mind as well. Unless the subject of the design is a serious issue or topic, I believe viewers should not feel stressed or overwhelmed by looking at a design work. On the contrarily I believe graphic design should brighten up viewer’s day and make the world and more pleasing place. If a piece of design can put a smile on the viewer’s face and at the same time communicates with the viewer; then without a doubt in my mind I would call it a successful design.

邀請了一位平面設計師來講評我們學生們這一學期的作 品。設計師在完全不熟識我的前提下仔細得看著我的作 品然後說 “你的作品裡有智慧與幽默,試著不要遺失它 們”,這句話不只是一個令我興奮不已的稱讚,更成為了 我日後設計的格言。我一向以創作出可以向觀眾釋放訊 息的聰明設計為目標,同時我也深信一個好的設計作品 不只可以取悅觀眾的視覺,更可以取悅觀眾的大腦。我 認為除非設計主題本身為嚴肅的主題或爭議,不然當觀 眾欣賞設計作品時不應該感到壓力或不知所措,相反地 我更認為平面設計應當讓觀眾的生活更明亮並且讓世界 更加美好。如果有一件平面設計作品能讓觀眾的臉上出 現一抹笑容又同時和觀眾進行溝通,那麼我毫不猶豫的 會稱它為一件成功的設計。
