ACADEMIC

Youth Hostel | Coimbra It was proposed to design a 26 double bedrooms youth hostel at the margin of Mondego river. It will be part of the new urban park located in the opposite side of the city of Coimbra, with excellent views to the old city. As it is so isolated, the hostel design will primarily focus on the contemplation of the river and the city. The “M shape comes from the idea to explore a panoramic view over this landscape.

FUNCTIONAL DISTRIBUTION

The public spaces are located on the ground floor with minimal walls to allow the continuity from the exterior (green space) to the interior. The bedrooms, on the upper floor, will have a privileged position for privacy and contemplation.

Museum of Modern Movement | Berlin The new museum will house the complex and diverse material of the modern movement history. It is located in the Kulturforum of Berlin, between the National Gallery by Mies Van der Rohe and the Philharmonic building by Hans Scharoun. The building was designed to be open to the surroundings almost as if it was a new street. Its conception comes from the idea of a big concrete structure that covers wide and flexible spaces, adaptive for multiple functions.

CENTRAL CORRIDOR

The central stairs and ramps will distribute for the whole building. From these paths you will have a perception of everything occurring in the museum. Starting from the main entrance the route will lead us to the temporary exhibitions followed by the permanent exhibition, and back to the starting point. The alternate entrance serves other purposes, like the access to the library and the auditorium. The zenithal light, as well as the open spaces with double floors, will create special moments in the building’s interior.

Military Hospital Rehabilitation | Coimbra The old Military Hospital is located at the top of the hill. This allows it to create a series of visual relations with other important places in Coimbra like the Mondego river, the Botanic Garden and the old University Campus. In the first phase of the project we worked as a group trying to unite these places with new routes and new programs that would renovate the central area of the city. Individually, I had to turn the Hospital into a youth hostel and the surrounding area into a sports centre. Considering the new axis and the difficult topography, the project consisted of finding the proper space and scale for each program.

COMPETITIONS

Water Tower - H2Office | La Latina

It was asked to build the new headquarters of the water company “Aqualatina in a place that already has a Water Tower in it. To answer this call, we turned this private investment into public service. In the new project, work and leisure will inhabit and complement each other. The multi-functionality, inspired in the idea of Theme Park, resulted in a new concept of typology and vertical space. Almost like a game, different experiences will turn this building into a big adventure while keeping its main functions working perfectly together.

PATHS

We distinguished the different accesses to the building in order to separate different users. The company employers will arrive from the auto-silo underground. In order to access the rooftop sightseeing you go through the central elevator. Finally, the aquapark users will climb the many ramps and stairs like an adventure game.

VOLUME

Astronomical Observatory | Madrid The competition asked for an astronomical observatory in the Madrid mountain, that could also work as a planetarium. The building also contains room for temporary residency, exhibition and auditorium. We thought of this building as being the climax of walking up the mountain. The iconic image of this prism leaning in the top of the rock will be a guiding light for the backpackers and cientists starting the path in the nearest village (South). Finally, a cable railway will connect the first platform to the main building.

VERTICAL TOUR

Once inside the building, the tour will continue. The stairs cut up the faรงades in order to get a 350ยบ glimpse of all the landscape outside. The program is placed hierarchically in order to locate the main rooms at the top.

Tourism Office | Porto We were asked to design a tourism office with exhibition spaces, located in the place of a ruin of a typical house of the old Porto urban fabric. Our proposal was to inhabit the interior of this ruin and give it a new life, while maintaining its humble history. We understand our building as a scenic wall that allows having an intimate relation with the old house. Specific moments were created in the facade to establish different ways to observe the outside, defining the frontier between the narrow interior and the wide street space, as the centre of this project.
