I was raised in Bettendorf, Iowa and graduated from Pratt Institute in New York in 1963 with a BFA degree. My passion for art started with my fantasy for the wild American west as a child of five. That passion is still my focus with the majority of my studio painting in Missoula, Montana, my home with my wife, Irene, for over thirty years. The paintings in this book are impressions from field sketches I have made on my travels. The sketching process for me is the activity I look forward to the most no matter where my travels take me. My work may be seen and purchased through my website:

Environmental education has been identified as a top priority in helping the country address the effects of climate change and the destruction of biodiversity. The Environmental Education Centre was opened on the reserve to educate young school children and to ensure that local communities experience the benefits of preserving the wildlife and natural environment of the reserves which they border, and are so encouraged to play a role in their preservation. The Grumeti Fund Scholarship was established to provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged individuals in neighboring communities.

Activities The Serengeti is well known for the annual wildebeest migration when two million animals move around this 17,763-squarekilometer ecosystem in search of grazing and water. The predators follow the wildebeest and zebra closely and a Serengeti safari is an ideal opportunity to view lions and other big cats. Professionally guided activities include game drives in open vehicles and walks. No matter the time of year, guests can always enjoy the reserve’s teeming wildlife, including impalas, warthogs, topi, gazelles, hyenas, lions, leopards, cheetahs and caracals.

Philanthropy Singita Grumeti Reserves plays an active role in conserving the wildlife that make this part of the Serengeti home. They’ve also taken the lead in creating programs to support the local community, establishing a number of sustainable agricultural projects including vegetable gardens, bee keeping, fish farming, a piggery and a sunflower oil initiative. The Grumeti Fund Scholarship was established to provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged individuals in neighboring communities.

Activities The main attractions of each day are the wildlife drives in open Land Rovers led by experienced guides. Every time you leave the camp, you’re sure to see wildlife beyond numbering. During June and July, guests can enjoy the annual wildebeest migration that passes right through Singita Grumeti Reserves. No matter the time of year, guests can always enjoy the reserve’s teeming wildlife, including wildebeests, zebras, impalas, warthogs, topi, gazelles, hyenas, lions, leopards and cheetahs. In the evenings, enjoy quiet pursuits such as reading, writing, chess, stargazing or trading stories around the campfire as you listen to the call of jackals or the distant roll of thunder.

Location Singita Grumeti Reserves is in the Serengeti in Tanzania. The best route from the United States is to Nairobi via Europe, then to Kilimanjaro (KLM flies this route daily through Amsterdam). The closest airport to Singita Grumeti Reserves is Kilimanjaro International Airport, about 60 miles from Arusha, where most visitors overnight before continuing by scheduled plane to Singita Grumeti. From Kilimanjaro or Nairobi, local charter companies can also provide short flights to the lodges.

Philanthropy Singita Pamushana Lodge is highly involved in the conservation of the reserve and the enrichment of local communities through various development initiatives spearheaded by the Malilangwe Trust. The trust feeds 25,000 children every day, sponsors over 300 college scholarships a year and funds small-scale irrigation projects to promote self-sufficient and sustainable community enrichment.

Activities With only six game drive vehicles on 130,000 private acres, safaris on Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve offer the greatest opportunities to see the “Big Five” — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros — as well as other great game animals and rare species. The reserve is home to more than 400 species of birds, with the highest concentration of raptors in the world. Walks with licensed professional guides are a highlight of the Malilangwe experience. A system of hides and blinds and water holes has been developed for special close encounters where absolutely anything may appear to thrill the hidden guest. Fishing for large mouth bass and clay court tennis are a few of the other activities to be enjoyed.

Location Pamushana is situated in the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve in the southeast Lowveld region of Zimbabwe. Guests can fly to Johannesburg or Harare, where private charters fly into Buffalo Range International Airport — an international entry / exit point with customs and immigration. Malilangwe personnel will meet you and drive you to the lodge. There is a private airstrip for guests arriving by private plane.

Philanthropy One of explora’s main missives is not only to respect the fragile environments where it is located, but to contribute to their sustained growth. Whether collaborating with the Tapati, the local festival that brings Easter Island’s traditions and beliefs back to life, or teaching English to elementary school students in San Pedro de Atacama, explora gives back in many different ways. explora’s efforts have not gone unnoticed — founder Pedro Ibanez was recently awarded “Best Contribution in Education for Future Generations” by the PoderBCG Business Awards. The awards recognize individuals who have demonstrated remarkable strategy, vision and execution in their respective businesses.

Philanthropy Volcanoes Safaris has developed a responsible and sensitive ecotourism vision. The company believes that carefully controlled ecotourism is essential to the survival of the great apes and the conservation of their habitats; local people need to earn a livelihood if they are to appreciate the importance of protecting both man’s nearest cousins and their habitats. The Volcanoes Safaris Partnership Trust, a separate non-profit entity, works to support communities and conservation projects in Uganda and Rwanda. A portion of the proceeds from each safari is donated to the Trust, so that tourism contributes to this vital work.
