The Need: Being a guitar player is like being a part of a club. One that shares a love of playing music and an appreciation for those who have excelled with the instrument. Guitarists often share a curiosty of how to continuously get better and improve their equipment list (or ‘ARSENAL’ in guitarist jargon). In the quest to be better, they inevitably run into challenges when it comes to acheiving the ‘perfect sound.’ The gear is expensive and the options are countless. Sometimes a player’s not even sure what he/she already has, expecially if it’s an older model guitar. There are always questions regarding the components, the wood, the origin, the manufacturing year. Sound and instrument value are affected. There has never really been a quick and easy way to get information on such things. The equipment one uses shapes his/her identity as a player. There has never been an easy, accessible, and organized community to bring guitarists together based on what they use. When the gear accumulates, it can be difficult to keep track and stay organized.
The Solution: The new iPhone App ‘GUITARMY’ is designed to meet the information needs of the modern guitarist. It provides an inexpensive, quick and easy way to: Get information on a guitar’s: -Manufacturing year -History -Place of origin -Stock components -Wood type Instantly communicate with other users in your area and beyond Ask questions, share information and opinions on music and guitars in forum threads See maps indicating what users and guitars are currently in your area. Promote upcoming shows and events Post classified ads to buy or sell specific guitars Organize information on the gear you have Compare equipment lists with other users and what the pros use
This is an iPhone app so it needs to simple, sleek, and compact in design. It needs to take users to where they need to go in as few steps possible. Going from one area to the next must make sense and be effortless with as few dead ends and as little backing up as possible.
This applications needs to be visual clean, uncluttered, yet edgy at the same time. Black and Red and appropriate colors. Slightly distressed typefaces and symbols such as flames, stars, stripes guitar shapes can all be utilized to make this a visually engaging experience appropriate to the audience.
Content The Content must be clear and engaging to a guitarist who is most likely looking for simple yet complete information without spending too much time. It has to be relevent to the needs of a guitarist and have the edgy ‘cool’ factor. It should have a rock n’ roll attitude and use the familiar jargon but should not go over the top with cliches.
Functionality The application needs to function quickly and smoothly. There will be instant maps and messages involved and they need to stay current. Being familiar with apps such as Facebook and Yelp, the users will be savvy enough to know if this app is holding it’s own or faling short in comparison.
Brandon The Aspiring Rock Star Goals
Brandon has been playing guitar for a while but is not very confident when it comes to buying new gear. He also doesn’t know a lot about the equipment he owns. He wants an easy and intriging way to learn more about guitars and network with other guitar players.
Music has always been a big part of Brandon’s life. He downloads music and loves the iPhone. Since he was 10, he’s loved anything made by Apple. He’s a good student. Spends a lot of time going out to local clubs to hear music and plays out with his indie rock band 2-3 times a month. Intelligent, artistic, optimistic, and outgoing.
Pet Peeves Pschographics & Demographics -23 yrs old -College student -$24,000 income -Guitarist for 5 yrs -Plays in a band -Computer savvy
-Loves indie rock -Gamer -Lives in Austin, TX -Concert goer -Downloads music
Being quite tech savvy, Brandon hates it when electronics are flawed in design or function. Since his income isn’t great, he doesn’t like spending a lot of money on new gear, especially when he feels he doesn’t know enough about it.
Ryan The Professional Musician Goals
Ryan is a guitar pro. He knows equipment well. He’s resonably tech savvy and loves his iPhone. He likes the idea of an App where he can organize all of his equipment and easily communicate with other players to stay current on the latest gear and trends.
Having been around a while, Ryan has seen a lot of changes in the music industry. He has built up quite an ensemble of instruments and gear throughout his career. He has met many other musicians and made many friends from years of touring. He’s a confident perfectionist who knows how important it is to keep an ear to the street in a tough business that changes quickly.
Pschographics & Demographics -35 yrs old -Lives in Bubank, CA -$75,000+ income -Guitarist for 20 yrs -Music Degree
-Single -Travels often for work -Tech savvy enough -Can play any style -Loves vinyl albums
As an artist, Ryan appreciates things that are done well and is annoyed by mediocrety and incompetence. He’s not crazy about how much he has to travel for work. He specifically doesn’t like the down time when he is bored and isn’t sure what to do with himself in new places.
Allen The Collector/Hobbyist Goals
Allen has long been only a casual guitar player, playing with friends occasionally. But he has a passion for collecting vintage gear the way some do for classic cars. He would like an easy way to know what year a guitar was made and other important info that helps determine value without having to spend so much time hunting around the web.
A newly retired teacher, Allen is a good hearted, patient individual who’s enjoying more time to pursue interests that he never had time for- such as playing music with his friends and building his dream guitar collection. He loves meeting new people and talking about classic rock or anything relating to vintage guitars.
Pschographics & Demographics -60 yrs old -Lives in Boston, MA -$55,000 income -Casual guitarist -Retired teacher -Collects vintage gear
-Married -3 kids -Can get his email out -Jams with friends -Classic rock nut
He has never been the fastest internet user, but Allen does prefer to find out information for himself. He doesn’t trust salesmen. He doesn’t like wasting time with technical gadgets that aren’t intuitive, but is so far impressed with the iPhone.
