having great experiences? Below is a list of places in the South Jersey/Philadelphia region that are great for a day out with the grandchildren.
oday’s grandparents play a much different role in their grandchildren’s lives compared to a generation ago. From picking up children from school to attending their sporting events, grandparents are increasingly becoming more active in the day-to-day lives of their grandchildren. According to Legacy Project, 25% of grandparents provide regular day care for their grandchildren.
• Local libraries – many host story hours, Lego groups and more
• Indoor Activities – Open Gym (Bright Stars), Sahara Sams
• Zoos – Cape Philadelphia Zoo
• Sporting Events
According to an AARP survey, the top five activities grandparents say they do with their grandchildren are: eating together, watching TV or playing on the computer, staying overnight, shopping for clothes or engaging in exercise/sports.
• Aquariums – Atlantic City Aquarium, Adventure Aquarium, Camden
With grandparents spending more time with their grandchildren, there are always questions of what to do to keep the kids busy while enjoying quality time together. A good place to start is by thinking of activities you used to do with your parents or grandparents. This is an excellent way to introduce your grandchildren to your favorite past times while passing down a piece of your roots and who you are. You never know, it may become one of their favorite activities! Want to have new and meaningful experiences with your grandchildren? Interested in taking them on adventures and

s shopping too difficult? Would you rather skip going out during bad weather? Do you have difficulty reaching or carrying needed items? Whatever the reason may be, a Village by the Shore membership can offer you the convenience and luxury of grocery assistance. With a quick visit from a volunteer, you can receive the wonderful benefit of grocery assistance. JFS volunteers will work within your schedule to ensure you have your groceries in a timely manner. Grocery assistance is not only convenient but also helps members plan ahead for nutritious meals. A volunteer will come to your house and assist you with your grocery list, making it customizable to your needs and wants. After completing your list, the volunteer will place your grocery order online. Once your order is ready (typically within a day or two) another volunteer will pick up the groceries from the store, deliver them to your home and unload and put away your purchases.
Anna Feldman provides grocery assistance through the James Klinghoffer Nursing & Nutrition Program, a service of Village by the Shore.
Members also have access to Village by the Shore Nurse Educator, Maggie Weaver, who helps to create specialized diets and meal plans for members with health concerns such as diabetes, high cholesterol and more. Additionally, online grocery ordering is provided by Shoprite from Home, which typically charges a $17 fee for this service. This fee is waived for Village members as it is part of the membership benefits (includes two orders per month, any additional orders will be charged the $17 fee). In addition to grocery assistance, Village by the Shore also offers Kosher Meals on Wheels for those who follow Kosher dietary guidelines.
“It is a rewarding experience being a grocery shopping and delivery volunteer,” said a volunteer. “It is wonderful knowing that I am helping Village members have access to the

Whether you are going out or staying in, the activities that you do with your grandchildren can strengthen your relationship and create long-lasting memories. It is important for these activities to be fun but also educational, whether they are learning something new about the world, history, or your personal interests.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors From Volunteer to Member
S
ylvia and David Guralnik are active community members with involvement with Hadassah, ORT and Beth El. The couple volunteered with JFS to help with transportation, friendly visits and food pantry. After years of helping others, the Guralniks needed assistance. In March 2016, Sylvia missed a step and fell, breaking her hip. David immediately called Village by the Shore. He had never cooked, shopped or even done the laundry himself. “My first priority was getting Dave fed,” said Sylvia. “Because we had volunteered at JFS, we were comfortable calling. That call saved us!” Dave began receiving Kosher Meals on Wheels (entrée, soup, fruit, dessert and bread) seven days a week. Once the meals were organized, Dave needed help to fix the steps to ensure everyone’s safety. Village by the Shore referred a trusted Service Partner who replaced the steps with a ramp to the exact specifications of Sylvia’s walker. Not only was Richard Swanson Home Repair a vetted and reliable Server Partner but he also offers a discount to Village members. Every month, Village members receive an updated list of vetted local businesses.

“In the middle of the hot summer, our air condition broke down. We called Clay’s Climate Control from the Village Service Partner list and they came out the same day and repaired it,” said Dave. “They even called to check the next day to ensure we were satisfied. Both Service Partners did an excellent job. It is a marvelous thing the Village offers.”

After some time in rehab, Sylvia returned home and the couple doubled their Kosher Meals on Wheels order. Once she was able to prepare meals herself, Sylvia and Dave began using transportation weekly to Shoprite. “We get picked up at our front door and dropped off at the store entrance. When the driver takes us home, he even brings all the bags in the house for us,” explained Sylvia.

Looking forward to the winter months, the Guralniks plan on utilizing the agency’s Grocery Shopping & Delivery program in which a Village volunteer comes to your home with a laptop and assists with online grocery ordering and payment. The following day, a volunteer will deliver the order and help put the groceries away. The Guralniks are the perfect example of neighbors helping neighbors. They spent years giving their time to help others and now community members are providing them the same support,” explained Village by the Shore Director, Tina Serota. As Village members, the Guralniks also receive complementary trash valet. A volunteer comes every week to take the trash to the curb and return the cans empty to their home. “When we needed JFS the most, they were there,” said Dave. “We appreciate everything. It means so much!”
