Proceeds from the Card Party will benefit Village by the Shore, which provides services and socialization for adults (50+). By making the Card Party its own event this year, Jewsih Family Service (JFS) has expanded the party allowing for more attendees and additional activities throughout the day. Beginning at 10:30 am, the Card Party features the classic games that attendees love including Bridge, Canasta and Mah Jong. If you delight in playing these games, you have the opportunity to enjoy your passion while also raising money for JFS. The day will include the addition of a vendor court bringing quality, exciting products and services to party participants. Walk around the exhibitor area and interact with vendors such retail, cosmetics, a bank, insurance and more. Breakfast, a buffet lunch and prizes add to the activities and fun. “With the Card Party being its own signature event this year, we are excited to bring attendees some new and different components such as the vendor court,” said Andrea Steinberg, JFS Executive Director. “This is a great opportunity for the community to have a fun day and also connect with products and services that are useful to them while learning more about the Village.”

Member Spotlight Brother and Sister, A Perfect Fit for the Village!
uth, a senior resident of Atlantic City, often felt isolated from the community due to the fact that she doesn’t drive anymore. She enjoys socializing with others and meeting new people, but found she wasn’t doing that often due to transportation barriers. To help with this issue, Ruth inquired about JFS’ newest initiative, Village by the Shore. She was no stranger to JFS, having been an Older Adult client for many years. However, with the expanded services offered through the Village, Ruth saw the value of this program and became its first member in November 2013. In the subsequent months, Ruth has utilized the transportation assistance by getting rides to doctor’s appointments, receiving grocery assistance and even attended the Village member luncheon. In March, she found these services to be so helpful that she convinced her brother, David, to become a Village member as well. “Due to the fact that Ruth and I don’t drive anymore, the benefit of transporta-
tion means getting out more and leading more independent and active lives,” said David. “I am excited to meet new people, and go out to dinner with my sister a little more often.”
The Village has helped reconnect us with our community David and Ruth have been summering in Atlantic City together since they were kids at their aunt’s boarding house. David, a retired accountant, who spent most of his life in New York, relocated to Atlantic City, followed shortly thereafter by Ruth, who relocated from California where she worked for a software company. With family that lives an hour away, it is
nice that David and Ruth have each other so close, only a couple of floors apart in the Berkley Apartments. Now that they are Village members, they also have a woven network of providers, volunteers and Care Coordinators looking after them. “Having access to a wonderful volunteer network is extremely helpful to me and makes my life significantly easier,” said Ruth. “It is hard for me to maneuver around the store so having volunteers bring me items that I need is a great help and a truly valuable service.” Ruth and David are excited to participate in new activities. They have discussed using some of their own talents to volunteer to help others. Ruth, an avid card player, hopes to attend the Card Party, while David wants to learn more about Medicare during an upcoming seminar. Although they say a lot has changed since they came here when they were kids, both still love the shore and enjoy living so close to the beach. Now, Village by the Shore helps them age comfortably in their own homes while continuing to enjoy all this community has to offer.

BoomerS Caring for your aging parent
With more Americans living well beyond their 70’s, more adult children, especially the baby boomer generation, are put in a position where they have to be caregivers for their aging parents. Approximately 43.5 million Americans currently tackle the responsibility of regular caregiving for an older relative or friend, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving. When caring for a parent, children have a number of things to think about. Decisions need to be made on things such as benefits, insurance, legal affairs, finances, healthcare and housing. Discussing these matters with your parent early on will significantly help with the decision making process later, especially if a parent were to develop dementia or Alzheimer’s. Communication and behavioral challenges can compound the complexity of providing care.
Who Should Be the Primary Caregiver? If you have siblings or other close relatives, discuss with them each person’s responsibilities when it comes to parent care. Financial stability, geographic location and relationship with the parent will help determine who the primary caregiver should be. With this being said, primary caregivers do not have to do everything on their own. Even from a distance siblings and relatives can help with phone calls, paperwork and other tasks.
Service Partner Savaria Stairfriend curved stairlift

“Should I take my parent’s car keys away?” “Is it safe for my parent to live home alone?” Questions such as these are ones you will ask yourself as the primary caregiver. These are especially emotional and difficult decisions to make regarding your parent. It is important to have a support system such as your spouse, children or friends willing to listen and guide you during these emotional times. Also, consider consulting a doctor or counselor if you feel you need guidance with challenging decisions.
Financial Responsibility The financial aspects of caring for an aging parent need to be taken into consideration for the sake of your parent, but also for you as the caregiver. The average cost of nursing home care is $93,000 per year. The boomer generation, many of whom are close to retirement age, are staying in the workforce longer for financial reasons, one of them being caring for an aging parent. According to data from the National Alliance for Caregiving, an estimated 65 million people in the U.S. are unpaid family caregivers. Many caregivers don’t realize they may be able to receive financial benefits or assistance by claiming their parent as a dependent on their tax return, deducting medical expenses and/or receiving benefits from long term care insurance. There are also many benefits the parent may be eligible for such as Medicaid, Medicare, federal cash benefits, food assistance, prescription drug discounts, veteran’s benefits and others. A JFS care coordinator can help you find financial benefits for which you and your parent may be eligible.

Grocery Assistance T
ired of spending hours at the grocery store? Is shopping too difficult because of having to walk aisle after aisle? Having guests and need to stock up on food? Whatever the reason may be, a Village by the Shore membership can offer you the convenience and luxury of grocery assistance. Grocery assistance is offered through The James Klinghoffer Nursing and Nutrition Program, an entity of Village by the Shore, and provides an extremely easy process to members. With a quick phone call, you can receive the wonderful benefit of grocery assistance. Care Coordinators and volunteers will work within your schedule to ensure you have your groceries in a timely manner. Grocery assistance is not only convenient but also helps members plan ahead for nutritious meals. Do you have a preference between pulp or no-pulp orange juice? Whatever your preference is, a JFS Care Coordinator will assist you with your grocery list and make it customizable to your needs and wants. After completing your grocery list, we will place your grocery order online. A Village volunteer will then pick up the groceries from the store, deliver them to your home and unload and put away your purchases. This benefit allows members to still enjoy many of the foods they love while also making healthier choices. “As a delivery volunteer for The James Klinghoffer Nursing & Nutrition Program I am able to bring groceries to those who are homebound, increasing their quality of life while living independently in their own home,” explained Sissy Feldman, Village Delivery Volunteer. Members also have access to Village by the Shore Nurse Educator, Maggie Weaver, who helps to create specialized diets and meal plans for members with health concerns such as diabetes. Additionally, online grocery ordering is provided by Shoprite from Home, which usually charges a $10 fee for this service. This fee is waived for Village members as it is part of the membership benefits. In addition to grocery assistance, Village by the Shore also offers Kosher Meals on Wheels for those who follow Kosher dietary guidelines. “Getting a Village by the Shore membership was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” said a Village member. “I receive grocery assistance multiple times per month while also utilizing other services such as transportation and home maintenance all included for the low cost of $18 per month.”
