Jewish FAMILY Services
The Golub Family Exemplifying true community builders. The Golub Family (Neil & Jane, Jerel & Geraldine, David & Andrea and Mona & Marie), through their businesses and personally, have enthusiastically supported many non-profits throughout the Capital District. The Golubs’ heartfelt community involvement have benefitted organizations such as St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Albany Medical Center, Proctor’s Theatre, Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, Albany Symphony, The Doane Stuart School, Union College, Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, and many, many others. And giving back is in their DNA. “Going back to the days of our grandfather, pre-1930, there was always a strong incentive to help others and do for the less fortunate,” said Neil Golub. “Helping the community is instinctive. Sharing with the community, whether corporate or personal, or giving time and effort has always been part of our makeup,” added Neil. We are proud to present the Golub Family with the Anschel Weiss Community Builders Award. They truly embrace the spirit of this award: serving humanity with humility.

Welcome to Jewish Family Services’ 160th Anniversary Celebration. This is a very special evening for us as we present the 2014 Anschel Weiss Community Builders Award to the Golub Family. As we look back on our years of serving the community, it seemed only natural to honor a family who shares with us the tradition of giving back. Together, we recognize the responsibility to help individuals and families who are facing life’s struggles. In 1854, JFS began as a committee of concerned community members who provided assistance to new immigrants and their families, who came to Albany from Europe. Now, 160 years later, many of our services are the same: clinicians provide supportive services for seniors so they can age in place, with dignity, in the comfort of their homes; we work to protect children and preserve families through supervised visitation and co-parenting; we dispatch volunteers to drive Jewish seniors, so they can get where they want to go; and people turn to us for counseling as they struggle with life transitions, grief, depression, anxiety or trauma. At the core of our services, and at the heart of the Golub family, is that we are guided by the Jewish tradition of tikkun olam (repairing the world)—a tradition that will endure in years to come. We are pleased that you have joined us to celebrate the accomplishments of our distinguished honorees and we thank our sponsors whose generosity ensures the continuation of essential services for those in need. Through the support and generosity of our sponsors and all who attended this evening, JFS is able to provide: 188 supervised visits 50 individual and family counseling sessions 75 crisis intervention visits 78 in-home counseling sessions for the elderly and disabled 36 psych-educational group sessions 50 in-home supportive service visits to the elderly That’s a total of 534 units of services to individuals, couples and families in the community who might otherwise not have been able to receive needed services.
Serving the Community Jewish Family Services of Northeastern New York has been a resource for individuals and families in the community for 160 years. As one of the oldest Jewish non-profits in the country, JFS’ long history has been an evolution—from a subset of community groups working to address the needs of immigrants, families and children to a single agency; from an agency focused on the Jewish community to serving the entire community; from a volunteer organization to a professional one; and from a provider of charitable assistance to a provider of comprehensive human services. The breadth and depth of services Jewish Family Services provides today is much greater than it was 160 years ago. However, what has not changed over its long history is its mission and its responsiveness to community needs. Today, JFS touches the lives of approximately 3000 people each year through the following programs: Counseling and Supervised Visitation Services Our professional staff of licensed therapists work with individuals, couples and families to help them resolve a range of life challenges including, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, abuse and trauma, and life transitions. Our mental health professionals provide Supervised and Therapeutic Visitation, helping parents overcome the barriers keeping them from achieving visitation with their children, with the ultimate goal of unsupervised visits (reunification). Additional services include: Anger Management Counseling and Mental Health Evaluations.
Serving the Community Senior Service Coordination JFS coordinates multiple programs into one comprehensive service delivery package for seniors of the region, reducing the fragmentation of services and using resources more efficiently. Senior services provided are: In-Home Clinical Counseling, Care Management, Family Conferences, Project Five —a volunteer transportation service, and the geographically-designated Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Community (NNORC) Aging in Place Program. Community Services Through community services we provide support for the physical, emotional and social well being of Capital District community members. The Norek/Moses Transitions Program offers support, counseling and/or advocacy services to individuals and their families coping with serious medical, emotional or financial crises. Community Outreach assists individuals and families coping with family, workplace, addiction, and domestic discord issues. Haven Through a recent partnership with Haven of Schenectady, JFS now provides individualized support and encouragement to help people who are grieving. Whether they lost a loved one, are coping with job or career loss or have health issues, grief is unique to each person’s needs and circumstances and our bereavement counselors provide the compassionate care through the grieving process.
