Our Mission The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties is the umbrella organization of the area's Jewish community, bringing together agencies, organizations, and communities to support and fulfill the needs of the Jewish people. The Federation raises funds to coordinate services, and helps support agencies that touch the lives of Jews in Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties.

Our Governance The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties has earned the GuideStar Gold Level Seal of Transparency. GuideStar is the leading source of nonprofit information.

A 15 - member Board of Directors governs our Federation. Elected each year at our Annual Meeting, these volunteers include many of our most activesupporters and leaders in our community.

Beyond Fundraising Although our main mission is to raise funds through the mechanism of many different appeals throughout the year, we use education, community building and special programs to help transform lives. Together, we make a difference.

The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties has received a Three Star Rating on Charity Navigator. Charity Navigator is the nation’s largest and most – utilized evaluator for Charites.

MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY Dear Friends, 2017 – 2018 has been a very busy year for the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties. We try very hard to be as nimble and responsive to the needs of our Jewish community and the world-wide Jewish community as we possibly can.

We do this by listening to our partners including Jewish Family Service, the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center and our area synagogues under the leadership of their Rabbis and Presidents. We also seek input from our donors and those who are affected by our work around the world. We want your gifts to Federation to be as impactful and meaningful as possible.

In response to the needs expressed to us we increased our funding for programing for the special needs population, youth at risk and security for Jewish institutions. We continue to provide scholarships for first-time campers to attend Jewish overnight camp and to go on organized youth trips to Israel. We have seen a need for more Holocaust and Genocide education and are helping to send a professor from Raritan Valley Community College to Yad Vashem to attend the “Educating the Educators” program. The College has committed to creating new courses around the curriculum taught at Yad Vashem.

We have also built upon our past successes by continuing with our traditional funding of the Shimon & Sara Birnbaum JCC, Jewish Family Service of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties, Rutgers Hillel, The Holocaust and Genocide Institute at Raritan Valley Community College, The Holocaust Resource Center at Warren County Community College, as well as PJ Library and the Jewish Life programs.

FEDERATION IN ACTION Every day, the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties makes our community and the world a better place by acting on the Jewish values of caring and compassion (chesed), facilitating Jewish learning (Torah), repairing the world (tikkun olam) and social justice (tzedakah).

We unify and connect the Jewish community through effective fundraising and philanthropic resources, community planning, collaborating with our partners to provide essential services, and developing leaders for our future.

Federation funds and supports a broad network of organizations that focus on two critical areas:

COMMUNICATING OUR MESSAGE The Speaker The Speaker is the quarterly publication of the Federation featuring information about past and future events, news articles and Jewish interest stories. The Speaker is sent by e-blast to over 1,500 households as well as placed onto the website for everyone to read.

Jfedshaw.org The Federation’s website is positioned as the community’s portal in Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties. In addition to the Federation’s content, there are direct links to our beneficiary agencies and partner sites as well as our synagogues. The community calendar is also a great resource for everything Jewish that is happening in our part of New Jersey.

Social Media Social media continues to play a central role in building relationships and interactions. Community members who are engaged and connected to Federation share our good work through their social networks, expanding and broadening our reach. Federation maintains its ongoing social networks via Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Instagram.

E-Blast The Federation weekly e-blast is sent to thousands of e-mail addresses every Friday. It provides the community with quick updates on Federation and Jewish community activities. With a consistent 30% open rate (The National average open rate for non – profit e-mails is only 18% .), it is an efficient way to communicate about important issues and upcoming events. COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE (CRC) CHAIR: Jeff Schwartz

BUSINESS NETWORKING GROUP (BNG) CO - CHAIRS: Kenneth Kaplan Michael Lehner

The Community Relations Committee (CRC) is the Israel advocacy and public affairs committee of the Jewish Federation. It brings Israel programing to our community that covers a variety of topics from Israeli politics, culture and society, to anti-Semitism and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement on campuses around the United States. It also does advocacy work with our state government as well as the federal government on issues such as relations with Israel and housing for the elderly, or food programs for the poor. If an issue is of import to the Jewish community, the CRC is there to be sure our voices are heard.

The Business Networking Group meets three times a year. At each event, we provide speaking opportunities for business leaders to discuss contemporary issues and to share their expertise under the common banner provided by the Jewish Federation. This year, a new branch of the Business Networking Group, was successfully launched with the dual mission of creating trusted business relationships and giving back to a worthy charitable cause, your Federation. The group is the Bridgewater Inner Circle and the members are committed to creating a business community dedicated to prosperity and generosity.

The Inner circle meets every Tuesday morning from 7:30 - 9am at the SSBJCC.

WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY CO – CHAIRS: Cathy Binder

The Women's Philanthropy Division of The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties endeavors to educate, engage and energize the women of our community so that they may have a positive impact on the lives of Jewish women and children in need locally, in Israel and throughout the world.

Each year the Women’s Philanthropy Division chooses a cause to support. This year we raised money for youth at risk both here at home and in Israel. The beneficiary agencies – Yemin Orde and Visions & Pathways – both do extraordinary work in this field.

THE

The Holocaust & Genocide Institute at Raritan Valley Community College “Learning Through Experience” event is the Institute’s cornerstone educational program. It began as a one-day program in 1981 and has since grown into a threeday event held twice each year. More than 3,000 middle and high school students and educators participate in a series of workshops related to the Holocaust and genocides. The event features guest speakers and survivors who have experienced the consequences of hate and prejudice and have acted with courage in the face of adversity.

GENOCIDE INSTITUTE at RARITAN VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHAIR: Elaine Dunst

The students who attend the Learning Through Experience program are deeply affected and will carry the memory of meeting Holocaust survivors with them throughout their lives.

ETHIOPIAN NATIONAL PROJECT The Ethiopian National Project (ENP) impacts the lives of countless Ethiopian – Israelis, helping them make the transition to Israeli life and society. ENP provides social and educational opportunities from birth to bagrut. (prerequisite for higher education in Israel).

ISRAEL ACTION NETWORK Israel Action Network (IAN) is an initiative to specifically address the urgency of responding to a growing assault by governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) on Israel’s legitimacy.

BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL Taglit-Birthright Israel provides the gift of a first - time, peer - group educational trip to Israel for Jewish young adults ages 18-32.

AMERICAN JEWISH JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) is the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization, operating in Israel, the former Soviet Union, and in 70 countries around the world.

JEWISH AGENCY FOR ISRAEL The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) has worked to secure a vibrant Jewish future and serves as the official link between the Jewish State and Jewish communities everywhere.

ISRAEL & OVERSEAS

WORLD ORT World ORT is an organization with past and present activities in more than 100 countries spanning 135 years. They educate, train and build economic self– sufficiency for communities. World ORT is the world’s largest Jewish education and vocational training NGO. They benefit 300,000 people each year.

GIFT OF ISRAEL Give the gift of a trip to Israel to your child through a cooperative savings program between the Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties, your synagogue and you. Gift of Israel participants may use their funds toward an authorized and supervised Hebrew day school or Congregation school class trip to Israel of at least 10 days, a summer program in Israel of at least 3 weeks, a gap year program in Israel, a study abroad program at an Israeli university or college, or a post college program in Israel for young adults (prior to age 24). Children must be enrolled in a program of Jewish education through 10th grade and they and their families must also remain members in good standing of a participating synagogue for the duration of the enrollment in the program.

The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties

During the Fall of 2017, when Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria devastated the Jewish Communities in Houston, Florida and Puerto Rico the Federation sprang into action to help. While we raised money at home we also had the Jewish Federations on the ground, supporting hurricane victims and distributing urgently needed basics such as food, medicine, supplies, and trauma counseling. Our network of local and international partners served Jewish community members and all in need quickly, effectively, and with personal care. As the full scope of the damage is assessed, we are also funding important recovery work, including helping to rebuild damaged homes and restoring Jewish institutions. The Jewish Federation of Somerset, Hunterdon & Warren Counties raised $17,000 to help in these efforts.
