A Simple Passive Income Method

A simple Passive Income method you can start today The easiest passive income method to get started with, that also has the potential to grow into something much larger over time, is simply to create a blog with affiliate links. That way you don’t have to worry about creating a product, it’s already been done for you. In fact, you have lots of products to choose from, and you can choose products that are already proven sellers. You don’t have to worry about setting up a payment system, or dealing with customer service issues — that is all done for you by the merchants whose products you are promoting. All you have to do is: • Choose a niche that you want to work in • Create a simple website (takes 10 minutes) • Find some products you want to promote • Create some content for your website, including some affiliate links • Drive traffic to your website

You can easily get started with that in just a few days, although it will probably take you a while to build up any significant traffic, and therefore earnings. No matter, you now have your vehicle in place and you’re in the game. You have the means of earning a passive income, and all you have to do then is to grow it. Over time you can produce more content, find more offers to promote, generate more traffic, and your earnings will gradually increase. It might take a few months before you see any significant returns, but that’s OK. Think of this early stage as an investment in yourself — building your platform, and learning the skills, which you will profit from later. This early stage is really an education, and a very valuable one at that, which you’re not having to pay for. If you make any money in the first few weeks, that’s a bonus.

Building an email list As soon as possible, you should start building an email list. This is probably where most of your earnings will come from in the future. You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘the money is in the list’. Your email list is an asset you can use time and time again to promote offers that your audience will be interested in, and earn commissions. As your list grows, so do your earnings. And your emails cost nothing to send, so everything you earn from them is 100% profit. In time, your blog’s main purpose might even become just to grow your email list. Or maybe not, it all depends upon how your business develops. The important thing at the moment is to get your blog launched. Once you’ve done that, you can learn all about list building in this free course: timfelmingham.com/signup-freelistbuilding-course. Don’t worry about that for now though, get your blog launched first.

Put your customers first Now we’ve been talking a lot about earning money, and I know that ultimately, that’s why you’re doing this. Of course. But for now, I want you to forget about making money (well, almost forget about it, for now anyway). The single most important thing you must focus on in order to be successful, is helping people, not making money. If you truly care about finding out what people need, and helping them, then you will find ways to earn money along the way. But your primary focus must be on your customers and what you can do for them, rather than how you can earn money yourself. Don’t just pay lip service to this and move on. Make it the core of everything you do. It is vital to your success. Ignore it at your peril. Copyright passively.io © 2016

1 - Finding your niche This is the first step — choosing your market. You may already have an idea about what you want to do, maybe you have some particular knowledge or skills, or you might have a hobby or interest you are passionate about. If so, that’s great, it’s a good place to start. In that case, you just need to validate your niche to make sure firstly that there is sufficient demand within it for you to earn money, and secondly, that it’s not so competitive that you don’t stand a chance. If your niche is too small, you need to either broaden it, or change it to one that’s big enough. If your niche is too competitive or congested, then you need to refine and narrow it — make it more specialised. If you don’t have an idea what to do yet, even if you don’t have a single clue, there are specific techniques you can use to find one. All of this is covered in this article: passively.io/finding-your-niche Read that article now, and choose your niche. Don’t spend too long on this, you can always refine it later, or even change it completely. The important thing is to get started.

2 - Create your blog site This is one of the easiest parts of the process. In fact you can do it in 10 minutes. You need to choose and register a domain name, setup some hosting, and then install WordPress. There is an article which walks you through the whole process, using BlueHost as an example here: timfelmingham.com/how-to-make-a-website-with-wordpress You don’t have to use BlueHost, the process is pretty similar whichever hosting company you use. And despite the endless discussion you’ll hear on the merits of different hosting companies, most hosting companies are also pretty similar. The market finds its own level. BlueHost have a very cheap option starting at $3.95 per month. In the beginning that’s probably all you need. There’s nothing wrong with it, I use it myself for small sites, but it is a low-cost option, rather than a high performance one (obviously, at that price). Depending upon your budget and your aspirations you may decide it’s worthwhile to start with their high performance option from the beginning, which is still only $15 per month, or you could upgrade later. It’s up to you, it doesn’t really matter. The important thing is just to get this task done, and move on to the next. Worry about optimising your hosting once you’ve got traffic, it will be a nice problem to have. You will also need to install a few essential WordPress plugins to deal with things like SEO, backups, security, etc. Again these are covered in the article. Work through the steps in the article, and choose your domain and setup your website now. Again, don’t spend too long agonising over which Theme to use, or graphic design. The important thing is to keep moving forwards, and get your website up and running. Imperfect and running beats perfect but not ready yet every time.

3 - Find affiliate products to promote There are a few ways to find affiliate offers to promote: Firstly you can find suppliers/manufacturers of products in your niche, and look for a link to an affiliate program on their website. Often these will be buried in the footer of their website, or you could Google: ‘keyword + affiliate program’ (eg. surfboard affiliate program) ‘vendor name + affiliate program’ (eg. expedia affiliate program) Each merchant will have their own procedure for signing up as an affiliate, simply follow their instructions. You will probably have to have at least a basic website up, with some content in it, before you can get approved, although this is not always necessary. The reason we are looking for offers to promote before your site is ready, is so that you can gear your content around the products you will ultimately promote. You can make your actual application to be come an affiliate later, for now we’re just concerned with finding the offers you want to promote so that you know how to plan your site. You always want to present yourself professionally when applying to be an affiliate. It’s a selling job, so make sure you create a good impression when applying. Be somebody they want to work with. Secondly, you can join the main affiliate networks, such as: • Commission Junction (cj.com) • TradeDoubler (tradedoubler.com) • Share A Sale (shareasale.com) • LinkShare (linkshare.com) • Affiliate Window (affiliatewindow.com) Once you have joined the networks, you can search them for offers relevant to your niche, and apply to join their affiliate programs.

Thirdly, some of the biggest affiliate programs are run by marketplaces such as Amazon, who have products in virtually every category under the sun. • eBay Partner Network (ebaypartnernetwork.com) • Amazon (affiliate-program.amazon.com)
(Note: for Amazon, you have to join each country individually) • ClickBank (clickbank.com) One way or another, whatever niche you are in, you will be able to find products to promote. Look for products that have good reviews, indicative of a high level of customer satisfaction, and with a proven sales record. Look for offers that pay a relatively high commission. High-value sales are often no more difficult to make than low-value ones, and you earn a lot more. Obviously you don’t need to make anywhere near as many sales if you earn $100 per sale, as you would if you only earn $1. Offers that pay a recurring commission (eg. membership sites, software subscriptions etc.) can be particularly attractive, as you can still earn from them months, or or even years, after the initial sale. They are a good way to build a passive income that grows. Never promote any product that you cannot vouch for personally, or that you would not recommend to your best friend. You need your customers to trust you, and you will only earn and retain that trust by genuinely recommending good products that they are very happy with. Your reputation is worth far more than a short-term profit.

4 - Create content for your website You’ve found the affiliate offers that you’re going to promote, so that you have an idea where you’re ultimately heading before you start writing content. But you must not lead by promoting your affiliate offers. In fact, I recommend that your initial blog content doesn’t contain any affiliate links at all to begin with. Focus on creating content that is useful and helpful to your audience. Give value, help people, and earn their trust. Create some evergreen content (sometimes called pillar content), that is always useful to your audience. Answer common questions, solve common problems, share your experience in a way that is helpful. Inform, educate, and entertain. The more information you give away for free, the more you will be able to sell later. Once you have some content that is valuable and useful to your audience, you can start to interweave some affiliate links into your content. A common way of doing this is to write reviews, or tutorials, for the products you are promoting. But a lot of people do this (depending upon what niche you are in), and it can appear a bit spammy if you’re not careful. A different approach it is to write about problems that customers face, and how to solve them. Then you can introduce your products as solutions. Tell your story of how you used X product to solve Y problem. Genuine recommendations are a very effective sales tool. It will help you enormously when it comes to getting traffic to your website, if you create your content with keywords in mind. Keywords are not just the terms that people search for in search engines, they also represent themes, or subjects for your content. It’s important that you choose themes where there is sufficient interest, but not too much competition. Keyword Research is an important part of your content strategy. Read all about it here timfelmingham.com/new-keyword-research-tools-2016 and come up with some content ideas where you can see there is plenty of interest before you start writing.

5 - Drive traffic to your website This is a huge subject, and generating traffic will probably be your biggest challenge once you’ve launched. Traffic is the key to everything. The more traffic you have, the more subscribers you will get, and the more commissions you will earn. If more people see your content, and like it, you will get more Social Shares, and links from other websites, which in turn leads to still more traffic. Once traffic starts to grow, it tends to snowball, but getting it started in the first place is usually tough and slow. There are no shortcuts to generating traffic, but there is one thing that makes the whole thing so much easier:    Just create great content… That’s it. If your content is genuinely useful, helpful, valuable, or interesting, then your audience will naturally want to share it, and people will naturally link to it. You should certainly learn a bit about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), as that will help you to get free traffic from search engines. The science of SEO is not quite as important as it used to be because the search engines have got very good at figuring out what is great content, and what is not. And they’ve also got very good at defying attempts to manipulate them, so the old SEO tricks don’t work any more. Nevertheless, you should have an understanding of the principles, and make sure you cover the basics. A good resource for that is this article: moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo As well as SEO, there are specific techniques you can use to promote your blog posts and get them in front of a wider audience. A good resource for that is this article: www.robbierichards.com/social/how-to-promoteyour-blog-post If your commissions are high enough, you can try using some paid traffic methods such as Facebook Ads, or Google AdWords to send traffic to your offers.

Next steps The single biggest obstacle to your success will be just getting started. Nothing more. Your biggest enemy won’t be technical know-how, or marketing knowledge, but procrastination. And overwhelm. You need to be ready for this and make sure it doesn’t happen to you. You may not be a natural procrastinator, I’m not myself, but there is something about this whole online business thing that brings it out in everybody. Me included. How much do you need to know? There is a huge amount of information available for you to consume. It’s tempting, especially when you’re filled with enthusiasm for this exciting new project, to read avidly every article you can get your hands on, buy every eBook, watch every video, attend every webinar, and sign up for every training course. You keep searching for that last little bit of knowledge to complete the jigsaw, and then you’re going to get started. I know, because I’ve done it myself. What happens is it becomes like a drug. You keep thinking ‘if I can just learn a little bit more, I’ll be ready to get started’. Very soon. Any day now… And let’s not forget, there is a huge industry out there trying very hard to sell you all these things. And they are very good at it. You’re constantly besieged by amazing time-limited, buy now, offers for the latest training that promises everything you need to know to ‘crack the code’ to online income. Here’s the thing — you don’t need to know everything. In fact, it’s not possible to know everything, nobody does. You just have to know enough. And you already do. Just work through the steps covered in this eBook from the beginning, and get it done.

There will be things you get wrong, and things you need to change, but you won’t know what they are until you get up and running. The most important thing is to get started. Now. Don’t wait until you know everything. You never will. Don’t wait until you have everything perfectly planned. Your plans will change as soon as you go live, and find out what customers actually want, what works, and what doesn’t.

Further resources There is plenty of information about every aspect of this business available for free on the web. If you have a specific problem, for example ‘how do I setup a Twitter account?’, then Google is your friend. You can find pretty much anything you ever want to know there. There is a lot more I can tell you about all of this, and what to do after you’ve got started, but right now you don’t need to know that yet. I don’t want to overload you, or delay you any further before you start your journey. But I am here to help. If you have any questions, aren’t sure what to do, or are just ‘stuck’, drop me a line and I’ll help you. Just email tim@passively.io and I’ll get back to you. Yes, I do get a lot of emails, but I do read each one personally, and I will get back to you. It might take me a couple of days, because I may be on a tropical beach somewhere… Or you might hear back in 10 minutes. But do please get in touch, just to say hello, even if you don’t have any problems. I’d love to hear about you and how you’re getting on. Good luck!
