016 has been a very tough year for the industry. The Indian Government had began implementing various policies aimed at bringing more transparency to the economy and the jewellery industry is one of the most affected because of this. These initiatives are nudging the industry towards becoming more organised, transparent in its business transactions. The latest one, demonetisation had brought the entire industry to a complete standstill.

We have presented a broad direction towards which the individual business houses can move to become more organised and better prepared for the other stringent measure the government is going to take in future. The leading thought leaders in the industry came together to present their views on how the businesses should strategise to make most of the changing business scenario.

8pm: 8/11/2016 The Indian Gem and Jewellery Industry will not be forgetting this moment for a long time to come, the reasons may be different for different members though. 26

JEWELBUZZ | VOL 1 ISSUE 10

Being one of the oldest industry in India, it has seen many ups and downs but never has experienced a moment which presented an excellent opportunity for the industry to transform itself into a transparent and organised entity. But again, it is easier said than done. The process of getting organised and transparent should start from each individual member and translate into a movement progressing towards a more organised industry. JewelBuzz spoke to some of the prominent thought leaders in the trade on the way forward for the industry post demonetisation and presenting their views in this exclusive special coverage. They spoke on the five key issues of moving towards an organised industry, changes in overall business, product and promotion strategies and the role of associations and councils. Almost 85-90 per cent of transactions in the unorganised jewellery market in India take place in cash as opposed to the organised market where cash transactions are to the extent of 40 per cent. Unorganised players, Bhat said, would have to switch to credit card-based sales, as was the trend on the organised side.

Discretionary spending down, jewellery sales climb Innoviti, a payment solutions company backed by Catamaran Ventures, says card users have cut spending by 30% on discretionary items such as mobiles and consumer durables since demonetisation, even as the country sees an increase in the use of digital payment options to transact funds. Interestingly, spending for jewellery is continuing to increase, up to 10% from the first to the fifth week of demonetisation. “This is surprising as after Diwali jewellery sales are usually in a lean period, suggesting that consumers may be diverting money into jewellery for savings,” said Rajeev Aggarwal, chief executive officer, Innoviti. “This correlates with the reduced high-value spending,” he added. Innoviti is a payments firm backed by N R Narayana Murthy’s Catamaran Ventures and powers the payment backbone of companies such as Titan, Reliance Retail and Indigo Airlines. The company says it processes 20% of India’s card payments. On the other hand, as the cash flow is improving, cash transactions are slowly coming back to retail shops. This has resulted in a slight decline of 10% in card usage at retail stores during the current week. The share of debit and credit card transactions in the unorganised sector is about 30%, as opposed to 10-12% before demonetisation. This was around 65% during the initial phase of demonetisation, the firm said.

in new credit and debit card users across India. The processor, which conducts around Rs 6,500 crore of transactions a month for companies like Arrow, Bajaj and Airtel, says old users seem to be spending less than earlier, but the situation was improving. The company attributed the initial decrease in transaction value to cutting down on discretionary spending. This also explains the drop in monthly instalment transactions, the company says. However, after demonetisation an average of 320,000 new card users are coming into the system every day. “This growth is unheard of and shows the scenario is changing fast. After the initial days of inconvenience, people are increasingly adapting and finding a way out through digital payments,” said Vikas Bhasin, chief financial officer, PineLabs. In fact, the new users have pushed the average transaction value up. The company added 1.9 million new users in the first six days of demonetisation. (Inputs : Economic Times)

Pine Labs, a payment processor for businesses, recently said it had seen transactions from existing customers fall in value for discretionary spending, even as it has seen higher growth

MANAGE TOUGH TIMES BETTER There are two types of business--those that have had tough times and those that are going to have tough times. Generally tough times relate to money dramas, either a lack of business, or a client that goes broke or a combination of the two. Of course there are other issues that can create tough times but more importantly, what do we need to do to survive them?

Don’t make things worse by doing nothing. Whenever you see a disaster looming, the single most important thing to do is take action. Sometimes we can be a little like a deer in the headlights, not quite believing what is going on, frozen on the spot. The problem is that if we don’t leap into action, things will always get worse and they will get worse quickly.

Deal with facts not fiction. In the middle of a tough time it is really easy to start freaking out based on “what could be” as opposed to what actually is. It is imperative to get all of the 56

JEWELBUZZ | VOL 1 ISSUE 10

information about what is going on and to only deal with facts, regardless of what is going on in your head. Most of the things we worry about never actually happen, so don’t let your imagination get ahead of the reality of the situation.

Always cement your relationship with your existing customers. In a weirdly ironic way, when times are tough, many businesses actually stop servicing their existing and loyal customer. A depressed mood descends on the business and this in turn affects customer service. That’s why businesses in this negative space lose far more customers than they should, which of

course only makes matters worse. Now is the time to build bulletproof relationships with each and every customer you are fortunate enough to have. You need to be communicating with your customers, engaging them, finding out what is going on in their world and most importantly of all, becoming very clear on what your customers need from you.

Use this situation to rethink your business. Tough times are crossroads in our business and they provide an opportunity to make hard decisions about what is working and what is not. This is the perfect time to stop and really reflect on your business and

make the changes that deep down you know you need to make.

It is time to get out and chase business. Just as we can stop servicing our clients during tough times, business development can also grind to a halt and we all know that this spells disaster. As hard as it may be, when times are tough, you have to ramp up your business development and push through the hard times. Winning a few new projects, or finding some new clients might just prove easier than you think and it will go a long way to making you feel better.

M A N AG EME N T

Be careful whom you spend your time with. One of my favorite sayings is that “if you lay down with dogs you get up with fleas.” It is more important than ever to avoid the harbingers of doom, those people who are negative all the time, they only ever focus on what they haven’t got as opposed to what they have and so on. Don’t let yourself get caught up in the negativity vortex. Keep away from people who are like this and find the positive, proactive and energetic business owners who are too busy getting on with it to get caught up with misery brigade.

Be prepared to try “NEW”. When what you are doing isn’t working it makes sense to try something different. Now this sounds logical, yet I have watched so many businesses slowly go bust simply because they kept doing the same thing, right to the end. We have to be prepared to do new things, try ideas outside of our comfort zone and look to other for advice.

Invest in your business.

This is the very best time to invest in your business. It is time to give the outside a coat of paint, upgrade the website, come up with a new corporate image, train your staff, invest in new technology and really anything else that will make your business look more impressive and run more impressively.

Invest in yourself. Just as I believe that it is an important time to invest in your business it is also an important time to invest in yourself. This means learning new skills through books, seminars, online training, mentoring, coaching, really whatever it takes. To do this you need to invest time and money.

Find someone to mentor you through the challenging times. If you have someone who you admire and respect and who you know has been through a similar challenge, why not reach and ask for help. Be totally honest with them, tell them the problem, exactly how bad it is and what help you need. They can’t be expected to take on your problem, but having them to talk to, and to offer advice on how they got through their own challenges could just prove invaluable.

Learn from the experience. This can be such a cliche but it is true. Most business owners are really good at beating themselves up for things that go wrong but there really isn’t much to be achieved from this. Far better to take a step back and learn from the experience. What would you do differently next time? What were the clues that you should have picked up on? What are you going to do to make absolutely certain that this never happens again?

ROVERY JEWELRY STORE BY ESTÚDIO CHAO, SÃO PAULO – BRAZIL

Rovery’s debut jewelry store in São Paulo, Brazil. With a floor plan of just 20 meters squared, the

studio has wrapped the interior of the shop with an envelope of ‘tubes’ that appear tonally similar from afar, but upon closer inspection prove to be texturally individual. In its preparation for the project Estúdio Chão undertook extensive research into the work of Mariah Rovery exploring the various elements, jewels and textures employed in her work. “The contrast of textures, brightness and values are always a rich source of her art and work”, explain the studio, who were inspired by the artist’s use of relatively ordinary materials in conjunction with precious stones. The studio mimicked this style in their approach to the design, working with three tonally similar but texturally distinct materials: brass, wood and cardboard. The main street facing window is obscured by a screen of floor-to-ceiling tubes, with the material of

each alternating periodically. The central concept was to create a homogenous palette of textures where, from a distance, the viewer would perceive a warm and welcoming ambience. As soon as the store is approached, the materials reveal themselves as a contrasting collection of textures, properties and sensibilities. The effect is continued throughout the store, interrupted only by recessed glass display cases. The design raises the question of “worth” with regards to different materialities. Three distinct textures, when combined, are shown to be equally as appealing aesthetically — but some lose value or appeal when perceived in a different context. STORE DESIGN A CRITICAL ELEMENT IN JEWELLERY RETAILING, RETAIL STORE DESIGN DIRECTLY IMPACTS THE JEWELLERY SHOPPING EXPERIENCE AND THUS SALES.

NIGHTRIDER JEWELRY BY 555 INTERNATIONAL, DENVER – COLORADO

JEWELBUZZ PRESENTS BEST DESIGNED STORES ACROSS THE WORLD AND LATEST TRENDS IN STORE DESIGN EVERY MONTH.

N

ightrider jewelry was born of unwavering dedication to the creation of fine jewelry, with a focus on excellence in every detail. Realizing the mutual commitment to one of a kind, quality craftsmanship, Nightrider teamed with 555 to design their new store and fabricate the unique specialty features that would make their space stand out within Denver’s Cherry Creek Mall. At each phase of the process, from conceptual design to custom fabrication, from management to installation, the 555 team ensured precision in each detail. The materiality reflects the soul of the Nightrider brand with fixtures designed to highlight the artistry of the products. The exterior storefront is clad in light wood vertical planks intersected by large window openings and dark framing. At the entryway ceiling, custom metal mesh panels lead to the reception area, compromised of custom signage within back wall cabinetry and a light wood and stone reception desk, partially encased in custom laser cut blackened metal. Brilliant display cases furnish the front of the retail space. Ultra-clear starfire glass sits on black bronze steel bases with laser cut details between open frames. Two massive screens mirror each other to divide the front display area and back consultation space. Each screen measures over 7 feet wide and 10 feet tall, telling the story of Nightrider in laser-cut black bronze with applied printed graphics, fine metal mesh panels and dark oak framing. 62

In the back room, specialty jewelry is highlighted at center display cases, flanked by dark wood cabinets with waterjet designs cut through their solid side panels. Throughout, custom plaster walls add grit to the polished displays. Lounge furniture and accessories were selected to embody the American spirit in dark leather, blackened steel and raw wood. The space as a whole is an embodiment of the Nightrider identity, speaking to a passion for craftsmanship made in the USA. Photography by Jamie Gray VOL 1 ISSUE 10 | JEWELBUZZ
