With consistently rising petrol prices, congestion causing longer travel times and a less than perfect public transport system, inner city travel in Melbourne can be a somewhat stressful experience both mentally and on the wallet. The solution – an ecomoto, a motorcycle designed for inner city travel running on nothing but air. Utilizing an engine air rotary piston engine running on compressed air that could be refilled using solar or wind powered compressors, the ecomoto has a very small carbon footprint throughout its entire lifecycle. The ecomoto takes the form a standard/naked motorcycle, a genre that is already widely used as a commuting bike for its upright riding position, light weight and manoeuvrability all making it a suitable choice for manoeuvring through busy traffic and inner city roads. With a low RPM and high torque it is not necessary for the engineair engine to use gears, which will lead to simplified controls for the user. All controls are located upon the handle bars allowing for adjustable footpegs, giving a variable seating position. This will allow a wider range of riders to change either from their existing motorcycle or other forms of transport to an ecomoto. The naked styling is also paramount to the design to showcase that this is not a normal motorcycle. By having all the internal componentry fully visible it will be easy to see that the ecomoto is driven by an alternative fuel source.


ECOMOTO DIMENSIONS My dimensions are based around those of a selection of  standard style motorbikes. The wheel base and rake angle give for a bike that will keep a  straight line easily but still have enough manoeuvrability to  make tight corners if needed

RIDING POSITION Standard Motorcycles have a relatively upright riding position with the pegs positioned  directly beneath the rider.  The upright position gives a clear view of the road and makes  the rider more visible to other road user’s. With a lack of gears it is possbile to move the rear brake pedal onto the handlebars to  replace the clutch. Without out any controls at the feet it is possible to have adjustable  pegs giving a variable riding position making the bike suitable for a wider range of riders.

TECH PACKAGE Air engine & tank The ecomoto utilizes an engineair 9 piston rotary engine, the light weight and high efficiency of this engine makes it an ideal replacement for a combustion engine, shedding a large amount of weight from the total weight. the fuel is stored in a carbon fibre wrapped aluminium 130 scuba tank. Slightly larger than the conventional aluminium 80 tanks commonly used for scuba diving. At present this should give the bike around 30 minutes of use which can be extended through the use of a heat exchange capturing more energy and feeding it back into the system.

OEM parts

Although the ecomoto has a large amount of unique features, it can still make use several OEM parts which would keep production costs low. The following parts will all be OEM. - Front and Rear Wheels - Tires - Brake Disks - Brake Callipers - Front forks - Rear Shocker - Throttle and Brake controls - Handlebars The rest of the parts either for functional or cosmetic reasons will need to be purpose built such as the frame, rear swing arm, centre console (to accommodate air pressure readout etc.) and any bodywork.

INFRASTRUCTURE

For an ecomoto to be a viable alternative for inner city transport it would need to be developed in conjunction with a supporting infrastructure. With the limited range given from a single tank of compressed air the current infrastructure in place for combustion driven vehicles would be inconvenient for an ecomoto rider.
