Pool + Complex Senior Housing Complex Bridging Arch Occupy the Ceiling La Forêt d’Agrumes (Citrus Grove)

Pool + Running Complex, 2018 I

Our starting point explored the importance of water in creating multiple sensorial experiences, both at the individual scale and the communal scale.

|

Location: Mile-Ex, Montreal, QC

This introspection led us to define conceptual drivers that translated our understanding of the individual & communal experience of the pool and water environment into architectural terms.

4

The result: an aquatic complex that explores the multiple dichotomies that exist within the aquatic complex. An open space viewing platform acts as the main entrance to the complex. Above and below it resides a floating running track and a pool, linked visually by a large void puncturing its center.

Located next to the newly built McGill superhospital, this senior residence proposes a semi-independent lifestyle within a multi-generational complex. This is achieved through a framework that provides seniors multiple amenities and promotes co-living arrangements with younger occupants through shared units.

Location: Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Montreal

Senior Housing Complex, 2018

18

Key factors such as physical, societal, educational and mental problems affecting seniors were considered in the concept. The design thus integrates technological, environmental and functional solutions to set a new precedent for a crossgenerational healthy environment for current and future generation of elders.

Bridging Arch Youth Hostel, 2017

|

Location: Roosevelt Island, New York, US

III

28

This youth hostel project, located on Roosevelt Island, attemps to revitalize the relationship between the waterfront and the banal corridor of Main Street. Through the use of a tessellating arch-like column, this project proposes a myriad of spatial occupation overlooking the water side, linking the water to the inner streets. These functions include: public arcades, digital media centers, discotheques, cafes and rooftop restaurants. Part one focused on the generation of a tessellating geometry and its translation to the architectural program (i.e. bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.) Part two focused on its application within the socio-environmental context of the island (i.e. urban site study.)

Occupy the Ceiling CCA Charrette, 2018

|

https://www.cca.qc.ca/charrette/2018/winners.html

IV

40

Instead of implanting a prefabricated house on a fresh site, our proposal exploits the potential of unused ceiling spaces to create a hybrid of the original program and housing. Our site for intervention is an architecture studio space with its high ceilings but the same system could be deployed on other tall volumes like warehouses, industrial factories, alleyways and gyms. The 1x1m grid is elevated above the ground to allow the normal program to continue uninterrupted. The hovering plane is where people can sleep, relax or ponder. Thus, our proposal strips housing to its fundamentals through its flexibility and potential for growth. It seeks to make use of available resources rather than buidling anew.

• Type: Competition / Proposal • Team: Claire (Hao) Wang Thomas Zhang Ankit Gongal

1x1m - Individual Unit: Adaptation to a solitary lifestyle

(2) 1x1m - Two Individual Units: Emergence of spatial flexibility

La Forêt d’Agrumes (Citrus Grove), 2018

|

https://www.aupiedducourant.ca/portraits/forêtdagrumes/

V

46

Our winning proposal for the yearly Village Au-Pied-du-Courant embodies the spirit of Summer: fun, lively, social. Referencing Montreal’s iconic Orange Julep and acknowledging the light-heartedness of the Village, La Forêt d’Agrumes emulates the experience of walking under a canopy of citruses that glow during the night. These trees, painted two different colors on their respective elevations, emerge to become seating and standing bars for the public’s use. With its vivid colors and flexibility, La Forêt d’Agrumes becomes a welcoming addition to the spirit of the ephemeral public space.
