The Bunker‘s current show takes a look through the lens of Polish video artists from 1985 to 1995. For those first few years, the shadow cast by the imposition of Martial Law (which ended in the summer of 1983) cannot be understated the mid-eighties are remembered as especially disconsolate. All changed in 1989, and Poles had to scrabble to build a capitalist society from scratch. „Hidden Decade“ showcases the video creations of some 50 artists, offering a varied look at the era.

The Foundation of the Czartoryski Princes has loaned its jewel in the crown, Leonardo‘s Lady with an Ermine, to the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. In return, the gallant Hungarians have dispatched one of their treasures to Krakow, Goya‘s Episode from the Spanish War of Independence, The Third of May 1808. The striking painting is accompanied by a rare collection of Goya prints donated to Krakow a hundred years ago by eccentric collector, Feliks „Manggha“ Jasienski. „I was the greatest film actress in the world!“ So said Pola Negri when an unwitting doctor asked what she had done in civilian life. This exhibition was conceived as a complement to the 11th Silent Film Festival. Pola Negri, born Barbara Apolonia Chalupiec, was a Polish femme fatale who blitzed her way into Hollywood. „Yes,“ she affirmed in a 1978 interview, „I introduced sex into films, but it was sex in good taste and left a lot to the imagination.“ Catch this tribute quick before it closes on Thursday 7th.
