A tea house and a pilates studio are the two businesses proposed for the melrose square building. The tea house fits with the clientele proposed for the triangle building. It is a meditative space that can be used for a formal occasion as well as a place to study or meet with friends. The pilate studio is designed for the clients desire to teach classes as well as a business that compliments the meditative atmosphere of the tea house.

The concept for the melrose square derived from the montage images of bridges. The idea of compression and release is used throughout the spaces as well as varying levels to mimic perspectives and rhythms that bridges capture. Circulation is also used between the varying levels to replicate the same role that the bridges of Seattle display.
I was inspired by the vast number of bridges within the city of Seattle. It was interesting to see the different perspectives and vistas surrounding the bridges and how much it altered a persons outlook depending on views. Underneath the bridges it was very concentrated on form and intimacy.
Once on top of the bridges, the views altered dramatically. The vistas were layered and a much wider perspective was introduced. The concept of circulation also played an important role within the Seattle bridges.
The parti represents the vertical lines seen in the montage bridge images. The positive and negative space symbolizes the idea of compression and release that is further represented throughout the space with varying heights and levels.
The clients desire for a pilates studio will be closely related to the calm and reflective atmosphere of the tea house. Designing a space that is made for the overall wellness of individuals will simplify the forms
Incorporating a tea house into the building will compliment the neighborhood profile as well as the pilates studio. It will add a reflective component to the capital hill area as well as promoting health within the body and mind.
These inspirational forms were taken from various traditional tea houses as well as boxed forms that will be used as inspiration for the varying levels in my design. These forms capture the concept of perspectives and layers which originated from the bridge montage. By combining the traditional ambiance of tea houses as well as playing with light and form will closely parallel the concept of perspectives, circulation, and form.
[green strategy] Light wells
Opening light wells into the space will reduce the need for electricity. It will also open the two levels to give a sense of openness and views in the city environment.

The first level illustrates the concept of compression and release through the hanging tea box forms. A simplistic materiality was chosen for the space to concentrate on the strong forms as well as the balance between light and shadow.

The elevations show the use of lightwells throughout the space. By using open spaces for light will decrease the need for energy use.
The residential loft is split into two levels creating the same feeling of compression and release. The spaces are open to efficiently light the space with natural daylight.
The pilates studio offers new classes to the capital hill neighborhood. The pilates studio is very open with sufficient space for equipment.
