Work Experience Reporter, Oshkosh Northwestern | Oshkosh, Wis. | December 2011-present I am a general assignment reporter with an emphasis on government, politics and education. My coverage spans a variety of subjects, including city, county, state and national politics, the Oshkosh school district and the implementation of Gov. Scott Walker’s budget reform bill. As a member of the newspaper’s digital team, I am a leader in our efforts to expand our social media reach through Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and Storify and to find new ways to connect with our audience. As a member of the newspaper’s “watchdog” team, I regularly write and contribute to investigative reports that explore issues at a deeper level than most news coverage allows. Intern, Des Moines Register | Des Moines, Iowa | August 2011-November 2011 As a general assignment/police reporter, I covered everything from breaking news to feature stories for the Register’s Metro/Iowa desk. I was one of the first reporters to cover the “Occupy Iowa” movement’s presence in the cities of Des Moines and Ames. Digital Media Intern, Isthmus | Madison, Wis. | May 2011-August 2011 I covered politics, government and protests in Wisconsin. As a digital media reporter, I produced multimedia content including written stories, photos, videos and live chats. My coverage ranged from short-form blog posts and Storifies to long-form, in-depth stories. Intern, Center for Media and Democracy | Madison, Wis. | May 2011-August 2011 I worked as a reporter and researcher, covering politics and protests in Wisconsin. I also assisted with the launch of CMD’s award-winning “ALEC Exposed” project by researching, reporting and coordinating a social media strategy. Editor in Chief, Iowa State Daily | Ames, Iowa | August 2010-May 2011 I oversaw the editorial staff of Iowa State University’s independent, student-run newspaper, with a circulation of 13,500. I managed more than 150 employees who produced a daily newspaper, more than two dozen special sections and four websites. I worked alongside the Daily’s other departments, ranging from online to advertising, collaborating on projects such as the broadsheet edition, special sections and niche product development, and interacted with the community as the voice of the Daily. Prior to my tenure as editor in chief, I served as an opinion columnist, opinion editor, staff writer, news editor and editorial board member. Intern, CNN Money Unit | New York, N.Y. | June 2010-August 2010 I worked with the staffs of the shows Your Money and Your Bottom Line and gained experience in interviewing, writing scripts, obtaining graphics and pitching story ideas. I also learned the process of producing a package from an on-location shoot, from start to finish.
