Kansas City, Kansas is a city full of culture, heritage, and intergrity. The city may be under populated now compared to the past. When speaking to the community members of KCK and the city stakeholders, the main issue that was brought up was that KCK was a food desert. A majority of the population has trouble accessing food, which is a basic human need. How can we bring the liveliness of the community back and deal with the food issue at the same time? The solution to that problem would be to create a central food hub, with an adaptive reuse, urban infill, and pop up space.

Universitat Stuttgart - Stefan Robanus Winter 2016 - 4 months

Seestadt, Wien, is currently a city that has been under development to provide a solution for Vienna’s housing crisis. With Tallwood+, the challenge me and my partner faced was to design and construct an all timber high-rise building. Concrete and steel have been dominating the skies of our modern day cities, but now its time to bring wood back to into our cities. There has been a breakthrough in mass timber structures in the last decade, making the construction of all wooden high-rises possible. The programmatic elements were constrained to create residential apartments for any specific demographic and add elements that would draw people to the city.

Urban Context Since Seetadt is currently underdevelopment, there was not any urban context to go from. This made it necessary to look at the cities proposed master plan and design accordingly to what thee city envisions

Site Analysis With our site, outlined in grey, The decision too create The site plan was created by activating preexisting lines from the site and buildings was necessary to create an urban two surrounding environment. Volumes were extruded to guide pedestrians courtyard between the adjacent building and the Uthrough the site. We placed an L-shaped building at the north side of the site. The building follows a square grid, but forms angles on the south side of Bahn. The aditional building was added to the south the site where it meets site lines. The building is a twenty-story residential tower, but it also houses commercial and office spaces. On the south side of to give pedestrians various routes to the building and the site is a four-story building which follows site lines to create a semi-private courtyard in the center of the site. The courtyard is open to pedestrian traffic, courtyard but is less public than the edges of the site. The four-story building on the south side of the site houses commercial spaces on the ground floor and mixed use spaces on the upper floors.

The Frankfurt Office building is located at the corner of Taunusanlage and Marienstrasse. The building follows a 20m x 20m grid. Within this grid, the offices can be altered to the needs of the company’s with its open floor plan. There are two structural cores that are located on the north and south end of the building. The ground floor of our building is intended to be a public space with a cafe and seating for the employees. The top floor is designed to have an open rooftop for a great view of the Frankfurt skyline and the Main River. The project focused on the development of the buildings facade. We created a modular double facade system. Each modular casement contains a double facade system with exterior sun shading.

This first year design project focuses on how to create spaces that emphasize emotion. The task at hand was to create a journey. The world journey is not well defined, which made the design very open and free. The only stipulation was that you had to design your journey with a specific “kit of parts� and a wall that was to be cut through. This kit of parts consisted of planes, lines and points. The way I had interpreted Journey was to create a place that were polar opposites in style, yet emotionally brings you to the same place. To me a journey is all about perspective and how you see the situation at hand.

Trendsport Climbing Chicago, Illinois Universitat Stuttgart - Aline Otte Summer 2016 - 2 months

Rock climbing has been a trending sport in the last couple decades. The task for this project was to create a different climbing experience. With cities taking over nature and having to travel long distances to go climb, the want to climb for people is being lost. The purpose of this design was to bring natural climbing back to the people. To do this there was a need to understand how nature works. Nature is wild, impermanent, and beautiful. How could we bring nature into a city that defies everything that nature goes against? The solution to both of those problems were to create a climbing wall that initially play into the permanence of cities, but degrades and decays over time creating a natural climbing environment. For climbing wall, you let nature take its course and bring life back into climbing.

As hectic and crazy traveling can be, sketching was able to make me slow down and appreciate my surrounding and reflect on the experience I was having. Sketching was not only a way for me to relax and enjoy the moment, but also a tool for me to understand my surroundings.
