Fall 2013

O F J C C P R O G R A M C ATA L O G

Meet Our New CEO Zack Bodner Zack Bodner joined the Oshman Family JCC in late August after more than a dozen years heading the Pacific Northwest Region of AIPAC, the leading organization promoting a strong US-Israel relationship. Zack and his family live in Los Altos and are actively engaged in the local Jewish community. How would you describe your leadership style? First, I try to lead by example. You can't expect others to do what you're not willing to do yourself. Second, I strive to build the best possible team. You have to surround yourself with the best people, create a cohesive group working together toward a common goal, and empower them to do what they do best. Finally, I believe in providing a vision and motivating stake holders to take ownership of that vision, and roll up their sleeves to help get it done.

What excites you about this new role? I’m looking forward to building upon a thriving Jewish community, creating bridges to other organizations, and ensuring a strong, healthy, friendly organization. This community came together to build a phenomenal facility that provides a vibrant local gathering place. Now I hope to work with the community to finish building the campus, take our programming to the next level, grow our membership, and become the first place our community turns to for their social, cultural, educational, and recreational needs. The OFJCC is the place that brings everyone together: Jews and non-Jews; observant and secular; preschoolers, teens, college grads, young parents, seniors and everyone in between.

What is the biggest opportunity and challenge that you see? Perhaps the greatest opportunity is the incredible place where we live—Silicon Valley —and its culture of entrepreneurship and creativity. Every day people approach me with new ideas. That trail-blazing mentality is one

Ronit & Zack Bodner with their children Elie, Orly and Talia

The OFJCC is the place that brings everyone together: Jews and non-Jews; observant and secular; preschoolers, teens, college grads, young parents, seniors and everyone in between. of our greatest assets. The biggest challenge is how we create meaningful experiences that bring the community together in ways that resonate for people who express their Judaism and communal needs in hundreds of different ways.

How will you strike a balance between being a Jewish organization and offering services to non-Jewish members? I believe deeply that the OFJCC should welcome everyone, Jews and non-Jews. But what inspired me about this job was the “J” in JCC. I want people to see Jewish art; smell Jewish cooking; hear Hebrew songs; engage in thoughtful Jewish conversations; and feel that sense of Jewish family. You don’t have to be Greek to love "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," and you don't have to be Jewish to feel connected to the OFJCC!

What did being an OFJCC preschool parent teach you? When my son, Elie, was at the preschool two years ago, we were schlepping him down from the city because our future home here was under construction. What I experienced was that the OFJCC wasn't just a preschool for Elie, but a community for our family. We made so

many new friends that when we finally moved, it immediately felt like home because we already had an extended community.

What are you most looking forward to in your role as CEO? I love meeting people, learning who they are, and hearing their stories. I plan to spend the first several months engaging as many of our stakeholders as possible in dialogue about what’s important to them at a world class JCC. I want the entire community to feel invested in creating a dynamic, forward-looking epicenter for Jewish life here.

Do you have a motto you live by? I suppose the activist in me tries to live by Hillel's famous quote: "If not now, when?"

What is your fitness routine? You'll find me on the treadmill more than the other machines, but truly I'm a big sports fan. I played varsity soccer all through college, along with a variety of intramural sports. That’s why I love the sports leagues at the JCC and I’m also a big fan of the pick-up basketball on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Tell us about your family. My family is my life, and just about all of them live here, so every holiday is a big deal: lots of food, laughing, and craziness. My wife, Ronit, who I met studying abroad in Israel, is my partner in everything. My kids, Talia, Elie and Orly, have an insatiable curiosity, passion and energy—so I can't wait to build out the future grassy field at the JCC where they can run around and get a little energy out!

The OFJCC is proud to be supported by the Koret Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood. The Oshman Family JCC joins with the Koret and Taube Foundation in believing that the ongoing vitality of the Jewish people lies in the richness of its communal life, the vibrancy and diversity of its cultural and spiritual expression, and the shared experiences that inspire a sense of connectedness to Jews everywhere and in every generation. Their generosity enables us to present special events and holiday celebrations that bring community together, travel and education programs that build connections to Israel and the heritage of the Diaspora communities, innovative classes and participatory experiences that elevate Jewish literacy and invigorate Jewish practice, and unique experiences like the JCC Maccabi Games. We thank them for their vision and support.

Camp, Preschool & Club J Financial Aid

The OFJCC endeavors to provide a meaningful Jewish experience for our community's children through scholarships and financial aid. If your family needs financial assistance, contact Randi Brenowitz at rbrenowitz@paloaltojcc.org.
