GEИETIE

For over three decades Boutinot has been based in the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy; relying upon Samantha Bailey to craft and blend wines which honestly express the tapestry of the local terroir. With a ‘back of the hand’ knowledge of the effect of each slope and soil type on a wine, we dared to imagine owning an estate, yet such opportunities are rare in Burgundy as domaines pass from one generation to the next. Finally we succeeded in buying two key plots in the best climats of Saint-Véran, together with a gravity fed winery (in need of renovation) and a 300 year old house made of the local honey stone.A place we call GENETIE, in honour of the mysterious name we found etched into the stone of a listed pillar within the building. While we renovate the cellar and building, we'll continue to discover interesting wines that truthfully represent the diverse terroir of the Mâconnais.

Il Cascinone

We think of Tenuta Il Cascinone as our “sister” home. Not fully owned by Boutinot, yet with a clear connection as the first estate that allowed us to find the keys under the mat and let ourselves in. 1999 saw Paul Boutinot and Claudio Manera, head of Araldica, create their first Italian wine together, the same year that Araldica purchased Tenuta Il Cascinone, a jewel of an estate in the heart of Monferrato. Our mutual palates and ambitions established, in 2013 Araldica became a shareholder in Boutinot itself. Founded in 1920, Tenuta Il Cascinone was long considered one of the most important estates in the Acqui Terme region, particularly for Barbera d’Asti, before ceasing operation in 1994, due to the challenge of maintaining vineyards on such steep slopes. From 1999 a programme of renovation began, a new winery was built, and the vineyards restored to their former glory. Now with most of the estate’s 102 hectares reclaimed and in full production these prime old vines in the Monferrato hills live on. Winemaker Carlo Manera, Claudio’s son, is a keen advocate of environmental projects and spearheaded the estate’s achievement of SQNPI certification (Sistema di Qualità Nazionale Produzione Integrata). The Manera family are pioneers of quality Barbera in the region, with over 60 years’ experience working with the grape.

OUR HOMES

Domaine Boutinot

Established in 2010, Domaine Boutinot is a treasure trove of eight prized plots planted with classic southern Rhône grape varieties – old vine Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan Noir. All plots are classified as cru Cairanne and cover the appellation’s three main soil types – argilo-calcaire, free draining saffre and the stony alluvial soils of the valley floor. Stretching up to the slopes of La Montée de Ventaben, the highest point in Cairanne, our vineyards benefit from full sun and drying cleansing winds, such as the Mistral, to help manage the vines with minimum intervention. The total estate is certified to HVE Level 3 (Haute Valeur Environnementale). Winemaker Julien

Dugas is steeped in all things Southern Rhône. Beyond Cairanne, he works with vignerons who have outstanding terroir in the best villages, such as the high-altitude schist plots of Séguret. Working together for over 30 years with great partners, there’s now a deep understanding of the soils, challenges, and quality possible to best represent all appellations within the southern Rhône.

Wildeberg

Boutinot has worked with South African wine since 1994, underpinned by a deep love for Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc. Continuously drawn to put down further roots, in 2016 Boutinot settled on an unplanted and vertiginous slope half-way up a hill outside Franschhoek. A truly feral place, ceaselessly buffeted by the Cape’s worst weathers, and rich in protected Cape flora and fauna, we named our farm Wildeberg, or Wild Mountain. Wildeberg’s own vineyards are babies, so our wines are necessarily shaped by the Cape’s famed ancient Coastal Region blocks. As a keen member of the Cape’s Old Vine Project, we source fruit from exceptional old, dry grown and established sites that absolutely resonate place in our naturally fermented expressions. From 2022 Wildeberg bears the IPW seal on all its releases and strives towards an increasingly sustainable future. Head winemaker JD Rossouw has complete liberty to seek out sources new to Wildeberg each year whilst we tend existing grower vineyards and the young vines on the farm itself. A region rich in outstanding vineyards, our fastidiously sourced fruit has allowed Wildeberg to become a place to which good things come and great things flow.

Henners

Henners is 8 hectares of primarily clay soils, planted with Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay 4km from the chilly English Channel in the village of Hertmonceux, East Sussex. We produce a core of four English Quality Sparkling Wines and recently two still wines. Boutinot represented Henners from its first vintage release in 2012, until 2016 when founder Larry Warr looked to move on from the project and Boutinot happily took over. With the incredible Collette O’Leary as Head Winemaker, we have worked hard since then to bring our international experience and winemaking team to bear on Henners blocks, our wider source vineyards, and winemaking, whilst absolutely embracing that signature English profile. As with all our Homes, we work with a coterie of local growers on similar and differing soils that ultimately shape Henners’ expressions of English wine. As a founder member of Wine GB’s sustainability programme, we are working year on year towards a lighter footprint in our vineyards and production methods.
