TEACHER SPOTLIGHT Our staff was asked to highlight those colleagues that make your team the best for this month’s Teacher Spotlight. They are the ones that bring the best out of their teammates and make working on a team a great experience! When the votes were all tallied, Celina High School Math Teacher & Assistant Girls Soccer Coach Daniel Vario was selected as the Teacher Spotlight winner for the Month of April.

DANIEL VARIO

Vario is currently in his second year with Celina ISD after spending the previous six years teaching with Fort Bend ISD and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. In addition to his teaching and coaching duties, Vario accepted the role of UIL High School Academic Coordinator for Celina High School.

CHS MATH TEACHER & ASSISTANT GIRL’S SOCCER COACH

“Daniel has done a tremendous job of taking on the role of UIL Academic Coordinator this year. He has worked tirelessly to build team morale and excitement. It’s a touch job to coach these academic teams, and he has given so much support to alleviate our burden. He has not only jumped in to build up the coaches, but he has gone out of his way to get to know each student personally and encourage them. He has been the loudest cheerleader at our practice meets, and the students feel the love and excitement he shows for them. The student are doing their best to make him and their coaches proud.”

Congratulations

KEEPING OUR WATERS CLEAN What you should know about stormwater WHAT IS ILLICIT DISCHARGE? An illicit discharge is an illegal act of disposing of, spilling, or the dumping of discharge of any substance other than stormwater into the stormwater drainage system. The stormwater drainage system includes streets, ditches, catch basins, curb and yard inlets, creeks, lakes, detention ponds and streams. There are two ways illicit discharge enters into the sewer system: • •

Direct - flows in the storm drains created by illicit/improper connections between sanitary sewer and storm drain system, or Indirect - flows in the storm drains created by pollutants that enter the storm drain system through an inlet or through the joints of the pipe.

EXAMPLES OF ILLICIT DISCHARGE Direct • Sewage cross-connections with storm drains • Straight pipe connections • Industrial and commercial crossconnections with storm drains Indirect • Groundwater seepage into the storm drain pipe • Spills that enter the storm drain system at an inlet • Dumping liquid into a storm drain inlet • Outdoor washing activities that create flow to a storm drain inlet • Non-target irrigation from landscaping or lawns that reaches the storm drain system

Our Public Works team worked tirelessly throughout the day for our residents by clearing stormwater channels and culverts in the City from debris that floated down stream following the Spring storms on April 4.

MEET YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT Benjamin Dean moved to Texas with his wife and four young children on July 4, 2005, from Seattle, Washington. Fast forward 17 years later, Dean is now a 13-year veteran of the Celina Fire Department where he is the Fire Captain of Station 2. The Dean family has seen firsthand how much the City has grown, but over the years, they have seen how much their own family has grown. Now, the proud parents of four outstanding young adults (ages 19-26), Dean and his wife enjoy spending time with their two beautiful grandchildren. Aside from working in the backyard, playing with their German Shepherd, and traveling all over the country to hike and kayak, Dean is mentoring the new generation of Celina firefighters. In his own words, “I enjoy the work that we do, and the help we provide to those who call Celina home. It’s great to see how much the fire department has grown since I started in 2007.” Benjamin Dean Captain

MEET YOUR POLICE DEPARTMENT Alex Jones knew from a very young age that he was meant to work in law enforcement. His Uncle Tim, who was a Supervisory Special Agent for the DEA and served with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, would tell the young Alex stories from the field, and a desire to be in the same line of work quickly grew within him. After graduating from the University of North Texas with a degree in Criminal Justice, Jones attended the Police Academy at Collin College in 2014. Prior to joining the Celina Police Department where he also serves as the Training Coordinator, Jones has also worked as a police officer at Texas Woman’s University and Van Alstyne Police Department. Public Service runs deep in the Jones household as his wife, Carrie, is currently the Public Works Director for the City of Denison. The pair, who met at the University of North Texas, married in 2015 and have two wonderful sons.
