TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

Vanessa Hurtado-Jaramillo Director of Bilingual and ESL Education Celina ISD We ask our District staff to submit names of fellow staff members that exhibit the theme for the month. January’s focus was to select staff members that “encourage understanding of, and respect for people of diverse backgrounds.” We were immediately contacted by teachers who asked if they could nominate Vanessa Hurtado-Jaramillo, who is the Director of Bilingual and ESL Education for the Celina School District. While she is not technically in the classroom, they felt that the impact that she has had on the programs she oversees has been overwhelmingly positive. When asked about her nomination they stated, “Vanessa fits the theme for January perfectly! She has such a deep heart for people of different cultures and backgrounds. She goes out of her way to make sure that everyone feels included. She continually strives to bring awareness of the beauty in differences of opinion, ethnicity, religion, culture and political background. Everyone matters and should feel loved and respected. That is her goal. She makes me want to be a better person!” She is an amazing advocate for her students and families. Her focus on inclusion is evident through a program she started this year called Parent University. CISD parents of Bilingual and ESL students meet once a month and are provided with tools and strategies they can use to build a strong literacy foundation with their children. When you mention Parent University to Vanessa, you instantly see the commitment and excitement she has for the program. It not only provides an educational outlet for the parents of the students she serves, but at the same time connects people of different backgrounds and cultures to share their experiences with one another.

Smoke Detector Program Visit Smoke Detector Battery Replacement Program at celina-tx.gov

Meet Your Fire Department

Alex Jenkins My name is Alex Jenkins and I am from the North Dallas/Plano area. I have lived in North Texas for the vast majority of my life and have always been in the business of customer and community service. I have served the Celina Fire Department for almost 3 years and this is by far the best organization and community I have been a part of. I have been married to my beautiful wife Cee-Cee for a little over three years and we have two amazing kids. My daughter Sailyr will be 5 in October and my son Jameson will be 2 in August. My free time consists of chasing those kids around, constantly streaming movies on Disney+, trying out best to get out of the house to spend family time, and occasionally sneaking off to work out. Although chaotic at times, I wouldn’t trade any of it. In the 3 years that I have spent in the fire service, my only regret is that I didn’t pursue this career sooner. It also helps that the City of Celina and the community of Celina has been extremely welcoming and supportive. The amount of growth that I’ve seen this city go through in three short years makes me extremely excited for the future. Also, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to come to work with every third day and I look forward to a long and successful career with the Celina Fire Department. @celinafiredept @celinafiredept
