XXI CENTURY LIVING The Historic District of Savannah is an epicenter of entertainment, recreation, residence, and tourism. Yamacraw Village is directly adjacent yet is a center for low-income housing, crime, and low density. This Urban Design studio placed emphasis on envisioning what Savannah could become by examining the current conditions of Yamacraw Village. The studio also placed emphasis on exploring twenty-first century living principles.

After heavy analysis of the current conditions, it was concluded that Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is a strong divider between Yamacraw Village and Savannah’s Historic District. The final design lends to break the barrier and integrate both aspects of the city. The design aims to break the barriers between “social class” and promote full urban living; which is defined as a completely walkable community that relies on public transportation, a sustainable urban agricultural system, and mixed use spread amongst the entire area.

GALLERY + STUDIO ADDITION DURATION 6 Weeks Glenn Murcutt designed and completed the Ball-Eastaway home for artists Lynn Eastaway and Sydney Ball in 1983. The energy efficient home was designed to leave a minimum footprint while serving as an artist’s retreat within the Australian landscape. The house is situated on a site with a steep decline. The Ball-Eastaway’s position is site-specific, with controlled views from its ‘meditation decks’ and strategically placed windows. The six-week project sought to distinguish the definition of complementary versus similar through the design of two separate additions. The program for the addition consists of an intimate yet flexible studio space, gallery, kitchenette, and restroom.

SIMILAR LOCATION Glenorie, Australia MENTOR Professor Tom Dutton CONCEPT The similar addition responds to the natural contour within the existing landscape, which also parallels the entrance ramp to the Ball-Eastaway home. The overhead beams elongate the breezeway and mimic the joists that support the main home. The large, overhanging flat roof emphasizes the outdoor gallery space and veranda, alluding to the meditation spaces that Murcutt intended in the main house. The addition is positioned on tubular columns to remain consistent with the Ball-Eastaway’s lightweight composure. The tubular columns remain within the same integrated grid system as the main house.

COMPLEMENTARY LOCATION Glenorie, Australia MENTOR Professor Tom Dutton CONCEPT The complementary addition includes aspects of the curved roof structure within the plan. The main house and addition serve as appendages to the “spine” of the Ball-Eastaway home the main curve wall. The main focus of the “spine” is to serve as a course for circulation along the curved wall, allowing passage between the main house and the addition. The addition is constructed of similar materials as the main house - corrugated sheet metal, tubular steel, and wood-frame construction covered with plaster. The complementary design still alludes to Murcutt’s original concept of lightly touching the landscape and feathering of the wooden platforms because of its slow trickle to the edge of the curved wall. 30

VILLAGE GUEST HOUSE A program unique to Miami University, 16 students travel to Ghana, West Africa and work over the course of 6 weeks towards designing a contribution to benefit the community of Abrafo-Odumase. The first two weeks are dedicated to traveling the country of Ghana, while the last four weeks are focused on building within the village.

The guest house is constructed of concrete block, mortar, wood frame, and jalousie windows. The design emphasizes a large living space with a transverse corridor capped with jalousie windows at each end to allow for cooling and ventilation. The symmetrical nature of the design allows for privact between two guests while encouraging interaction in the large living space. The site is positioned on a hill facing the south, overlooking the village of Abrafo-Odumase. The guest house responds to the southern exposure with large windows allowing for sunlight, ventilation, and a strong connection between the village and the inhabitants within.

OVERTHE-RHINE CO-HOUSING A cohort of eight undergraduate and graduate students collaborates to design a successful co-housing community over the course of six weeks. Each member of the cohort not only contributed to the design of the communal public space, but also an individual unit that considered the shared responsibilities of the community. Each individual was to consider their lifestyle in ten years and design based upon the need of that lifestyle - many of these lifestyles included children and spouses. The cohort decided that the shared spaces of the co-housing community would include; dining for shared weekly meals, living space, laundry, a playroom, an outdoor public area, guest rooms, and study rooms. The group also designed underground parking with optional access to individual units. Due to time constraints, the public space was discussed but was not fully designed.

DURATION Spring 2015 | 6 Weeks MENTOR Thomas Dutton TYPE Architecture CONCEPT This individual unit sought to integrate the surrounding context of the historic neighborhood with a modern vernacular approach. The staircase serves as the “book end” of the row houses, responding to the abrupt angle at the northeastern end of the site. The unit is programmed according to function in relation to public street, and the “interior street” that is part of the co-housing community. The unit includes a dining room and kitchen overlooking the living space. The third floor includes a personal studio overlooking the interior street and bedroom. The unit is constructed with a contemporary grey brick and dark grey stone. The living room is shaded by an exterior shading device on the south facade. 48

SPRING STREET COMPLETE STREET The objective of this project was to identify a planning problem within Miami University’s campus and present the best possible solution through extensive research, data collection, and design. A project team of students decided that a major planning challenge on campus was the intersection of Spring Street and Maple Street. Spring Street - a large thoroughfare on campus - used daily by pedestrians, vehicles, bicyclists, and buses. The adjacent building to this intersection is the Armstrong Student Center - the most visited building during class hours. The project team saw this intersection as a safety hazard to all users because of its failure to direct traffic, pedestrians, and transportation.

METHODOLOGY: • Identify the problem at hand and all the parties involved • Collect data by physically studying the area and the activity within. The best way to collect data in this project was to sit and count the people walking/ biking/driving at various times of the day • Research best practices and determine what solutions are successful in similar areas • Identify multiple, alternative solutions in order to fit the city’s budget

GATEWAY TO AMERICANA In the Spring of 1016, 17 Advanced Urban Planning students had the unique opportunity to consult with ciy officials in Monroe, Ohio about an adaptive re-use of the former American Park, also known as LeSourdsville Lake. Through a multi-step process with Monroe’s city officials and key community stakeholders, a vision and conceptual plan grew to guide future development of the proposed park, adjacent commercial, and multi-modal connectivity.
