I am a first year product design studentstudying at Nottingham Trent Univertity. Within this portfolio I will be displaying work which I have created in order to complete my course. I have decided to use 4 projects out of the 6 I have completed this year, these are projects which I feel reflect my best and most developed work.

Researchled design project

Starpack project

The Brief Environmental- the brief asks you to rethink the future of consumer goods and delivered, used and ultimately re-captured to that valuable resuorces can be retained within a circular economy. For my project I decided to look into the skincare and cosmetics indusrty, this has allowed me to gain knowledge into what the consumer wants and how they feel about the brands they use. This has allowed me to crerate an enviromental scheme around them.

The Brief Sponsored by Logoplaste Create a dispenser/bottle that blends into its environment and dispenses a fragrance in a controlled way. For this project I decided to design my product around the needs of the bathroom environment.

003 Re-design project

The Brief Your task is in essence to reverse deconstruct and redesign a product that is deemed to be a piece of bad design. This is a group project, with each group being made up of 4-5 people. For this project we decided to re-design thebasic household potato peeler.

004 Rega project

The Brief To design a portable concrete speaker for Rega that could potentially be viably produced in small-medium sized batches. The speaker must be no larger than 150mm3 in volume. Your final design should show understanding of all materials used and all design decisions should be backed up by research into materials and manufacturing, relative to your own outcome. Whilst the majority of your product must consist of concrete, you may use other materials in moderation.

For my project I decided to look into the skincare and cosmetics indusrty, this has allowed me to gain knowledge into what the consumer wants and how they feel about the brands they use. This has allowed me to crerate an enviromental scheme ipsum around them. For my project I designed two programmes, one of which was based around bringing empty jars for the No7 brand back in to store with the offer of a treat, this encourages reyclinging and will bring the customer back to potentially purchase more products. The other programme is a re-fill station where the jars can be re-filled for a much lower cost which will reduce the amount of packaging the company use .

No7 online

The Boots website will be used to promote the new schemes. For my concpet to work every Boots store that includes a No7 counter will have to offer the bring it back and re-fill service. All No7 advisors much be trained how to use the re-fill machine to ensure the customer has the best experience as possible.

Bring It Back App

How it works

The app can be downloaded via the app store on both Apple and Android devices. The app will provide you with information as to how the sheme works as well as helps you to keep track of how many jars you have given back. The app will require a no7 advisor to enter your telephone number or email adress of the till which will link it back to your phone. Once you have managed to bring five jars back you can book an appoinment on your app to redeem your treat. Not only will the customer benefit from getting a free treat it will also benefit the company from bringing people into store to potentially spend more money.

002 Starpack project The Brief Sponsored by Logoplaste Create a dispenser/bottle that blends into its environment and dispenses a fragrance in a controlled way. For this project I decided to design my product around the needs of the bathroom environment. For this project I wanted a sleek design which would add a modern touch to any bathroom. My project will be a recharageble air-freshener. The product itself will include a moisture absorbant layer which can be replaced as a simple re-fill. This system is important to my project as it will remove any damp smells and instead re-place it with your desired fragrance. The two re-fills simply just need to be clipped in place and the despenser needs to be charged allowing it to function.

The product will absorb moisture which can caused damp odours in the top re-fillable section of the product and will disperse a fragrance of your choice from the brand slection. This product is recharageble so is safe to use in a damp and wet environment.

The product will come in a range of different colours allowing it to fit the surroundings of any bathroom. Although this is a product designed around the bathroom it can be used in any room or office which suffers from a damp smell. The re-fills for both the scent and moisture absorber can be purchased seperately allwoing you to replace them only when required.

003 Re-design project

The Brief Your task is in essence to reverse deconstruct and redesign a product that is deemed to be a piece of bad design. This is a group project, with each group being made up of 4-5 people. For this project we decided to re-design thebasic household potato peeler. The design of the peeler has been designed with a curved blade allowing it to easily cut around the product as well as it functioning using a two ball systment so the peeler doesnt cause strain to the user.

Design developments As seen in these images my design features a two ball funstion method allowing it to freely move around the shape of a vegtable which will prevent any strain to the user. The design also features a curved blade so that it can cushion the vegatble also allowing for an easier peel.

Function

The peeler functions based on three parts coming together, the two ball system blade is the main reason for ease of use with the design. The product will be main of stainless steel which will also include a stainless steel blade. This will prevent the product from rusting when in contact with water which is inevitable when the product requires t be washed.

004 Rega project

The Brief To design a portable concrete speaker for Rega that could potentially be viably produced in small-medium sized batches. Your final design should show understanding of all materials used and all design decisions should be backed up by research into materials and manufacturing, relative to your own outcome. Whilst the majority of your product must consist of concrete, you may use other materials in moderation. For my proejct I looked into the current design styles which rega used which was combining laminated wood into thier products. I wanted to continue with this theme as this is the trade mark for most of thier product range.

Design development

During the design developement stage many of the dsigns where based around hexigons which infulenced the final design. If manufactured the concrete would house a hollow section where the electronic components as well as the blue-tooth system. The design is based around some of Rega’s current products so that it fits to the design sytle which their speakers are known for.
