GEOLOGIES OF THE SUPER-RURAL, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE WALL

GEOLOGIES OF THE SUPER RURAL, OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE WALL GSAPP ADV.6 Spring 2018 Studio Critic: Juan Herreros In collaboration with: Khoi Nguyen & Xinxin Li 8

Galve De Sorbe La Mancha, Spain The history of these peripheral villages as they relate to the industrial-commercial urban centers is a history of the value embedded in their very definition. The populations in these villages have been emptying steadily due in large part to the highly intentional policy measures enacted by Franco in the 1950’s. Yet it is the contrast between the city and the rural, through which the rural defines its inherent value. This proposal recognizes the inherent value of the rural landscape through recombining and therefore re-validating and re-recognizing what’s already there as valuable resources, not only explicitly through monetary value, but in cultural value as well. Not solely through added industry, or added program, but a recombination of the existing faculties of rural life and knowledge. As evidenced by the resulting industrial booms in Spanish cities post 1950, you can argue that a true city is as much an intentional community as is its contrast, the rural village, so the question becomes, how can this intentionality manifest in the new village?

DARKARCHEOLOGY; INFINITE SCHOOL.

GSAPP Core IV, Spring 2017 Studio Critic: Tei Carpenter 28

Bush Park Terminal, Sunset Park Brooklyn, USA The Brooklyn academy of Science and Environments Material Science and Policy branch in Sunset Park New York, Bush Park Terminal is to be housed in an environment, not a building in its traditional sense, but composed of building elements all existing at various states of life and use. By hijacking the process of construction waste as it is collected from demolition sites and transported to its eventual landfill site, and usurping the material language of these piles, a prototypical construction technique was developed as an urban infrastructure. The Brooklyn Academy of Science and environments; Material Science and Policy branch treats the existing buildings, originally designed to operate as shipping oriented industrial buildings, as extensions of the ground, as found objects. Designed for a different use but hollowed out to leave the structure and house some of the larger programs of the school. Above these disparate old buildings a network of rooftops unifies these buildings into a campus and creates a new ground, partially exterior partially interior, varying spaces, of gathering or circulation which are undefined in program specificity but provoke a new type of occupation, as well as facilitate more fleeting uses such as a performance, or an adjacent assembly space for the classrooms, or simply lunch.

MOTT HAVEN, THE BRONX, INFRASTRUCTURE & THE CORE

MOTT HAVEN, THE BRONX, HOUSING, INFRASTRUCTURE & THE CORE. GSAPP Core III, Fall 2016 Studio Critic: Mario Gooden In collaboration with: Kutay Biberoglu 50

145th St. & Grand Concourse The Bronx, USA The building context Mott Haven in The Bronx, is the product of secondary value, and functions, in a scalar sense as the served space has been treated as the service space of more afluent parts of New York City. In this context, how can this quality be understood, and benefitted from, in terms of housing? As we depend on more mechanics to sustain our way of life, how can we live with the physical manifestation of the vast physical and systematic infrastructure that is of a scale much beyond that of the human body? The answer as it turns out is quite literally. By condensing all of the service space to the center of the unit, and combining it with the structure and the verticle circulation, The Core, is the architecture, structure and infrastructure. And as the project contains no walls, the core exists as the element that the entire project metaphorically and literally revolves around.

SHELF-LIFE

SHELF-LIFE. MoMA PS1 YOUNG ARCHITECT’S PAVILLION COMPETITION. Jesse LeCavalier R+D MoMA PS1 In collaboration with: Ayesha Ghosh & Zachary White 72

MoMA PS, Long Island City Queens, New York

Shelf-Life was the Runner-Up competition entry for the MoMA PS1; Young Archtect’s Pavillion 2018. The basis for the design was to consider the ubiquity of the logistical infrastructure’s materiality and spatial qualities that shapes our life through the flow of goods world wide: the unnistrut warehouse shelf. For this reason, one of the most important documents of the project was the material sponsor’s letters demonstrating their willingness to supply and assemble almost everything required to make the installation. The relevance of the materiality is played out here not just in terms of its experiential environment, but its material ubiquity implies that the pieces that compose the nodes in the world-wide logistical systems of flowing goods, are as prone to movement as its intended contents.

STOREFRONT FOR ART AND ARCHITECTURE; NEW NEW YORK ICONS

BIDIRECTIONAL CORE SAMPLE Work produced with Agency-Agency New York, New York, USA

94

Bi-directional Core Sample excavates past strata of bedrock, toxic sludge, and human infill, and projects physical layers into the future. Marking a turning point in time of the place, an urban scale model of the current area around Sunset Park, Brooklyn occupies the center of the core sample as both figure and ground. Further up, floating above the city, the scale of time moves ahead towards a nearby and then distant future. Conceptualized as a composite artifact, the material of each of the nine future core samples suggests possible trajectories for the city. The artifact is informed by its place, neither iconic nor frequented by tourists; instead its layers of ground and future accumulations, mixtures of natural and increasingly artificial materials, are emblematic of the city at large. A souvenir imagined as a physical fragment of a place, it acts as both repository of memory and fetish object to reflect upon dark or buoyant futures.

DATA-MINING THE URBAN VILLAGE

One Architecture and Urbanism, GSAPP Studio X: Shenzhen, Danil Nagy, Fall 2017 100

Shenzhen, China, New York, USA In this Rural China Lab project, a collaboration between Columbia GSAPP’s Studio X and One Architecture, data-mining techniques have been employed to harvest information from three types of sources, in both Chinese and English: academic research, journalism, and social media. The first part of the exhibition, in the open hall, represents the full volume of data collected. The stacks of paper are printed with every word written about the urban village over the past 15 years. Machine-learning techniques have then been applied to this seemingly insurmountable volume of data, to distill structured insights from the information amassed, and examine its evolution alongside the urban village phenomenon itself. Against the far wall, single distilled insights are projected one at a time, offering a potential window into understanding the collected research and opinions of thousands of writers.

3RD ISTANBUL BIENNIAL, ARE WE HUMAN? HOMOCELLULAR Curators: Mark Wigley and Beatriz Colomina Work produced with GSAPP Masters Students 106

Istanbul, Turkey // New York, USA The Thesis of the Istanbul Biennial poses the question: “Are We Human?” and the Homocellular answers, “yes, we are.” But the Curators insist, “No, no we are not.” The Homocellular exhibition puts forth the provocation that the invention and proliferation of the cellular telephone in 1983 signaled an evolution of the species to something other than a human being. The way we’ve bonded with it and the way it determines our new relationships with eachother and our environment. From new borders of nations defined by cellular service to, conditions of nomophobia, to its only source of safety protection and connection to refugees fleeing conflict, the cellphone has forever altered the way way think, move communicate and live. This Exhibition is an anthropological collection of evidence, traces of the homocellular species.

KAFA

KAFA, A BODY, A BOOK, AN OBJECT.

Fall 2016 Designed with: Nadir Pucinelli 112

Istanbul Design Biennial; ‘Are We Human?’ Istanbul, TR Published by Mas Matbaa, Istanbul. The contents of this book represent a human head at a one-to-one scale through the superimposition of 1250 individual MRI images taken at an interval of 0.2mm. Each page of the book contains a single layer of the scan in the order it was captured. The thickness of each sheet of paper corresponds to the section of the head represented by the image. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) represents three-dimensional information by compiling a series of sectional scans. These software systems lack the capacity to represent the dimensionality of the total object, as the display of these images is limited to the sectional view of a digital screen. By virtue of the MRI format as an accumulation of layers, the form of the book gives a natural physicality to the sequence of images. This project expresses the materiality of data through an analog interface. The book, through both form and content, represents the organic makeup of the human head through a substitute material. As a mirror object, it provides a counterweight for a critical perspective on the construction and representation of oneself.
