3rd Annual Golf Tournament Monday, September 27, 2010

Dear Friends, How can it be that we are into our 9th year here at Sacred Heart Nativity Schools? Some friends were visiting after being here in 2002 and couldn’t get over how we have grown. Being exposed to the school on a day-to-day basis, I sometimes don’t notice the growth. This was a very different place when we had only 20 students and 20 families. Now, we are proudly serving 133 students and 109 alums. We had a successful summer camp again this year. Kids thrive in the outdoor activities and don’t seem to mind the three hours of academic work we ask of them every day. Swimming is one of the favored activities, especially on those hot Placer County summer days. The boys and girls had another positive experience at the Bellarmine Summer School program. I am grateful for this partnership. Our students continue to grow in many ways. We have data from our fall IOWA test scores that show our 8th graders have grown in Core subjects on average 23 percentile points in the two years they have been SHNS or OLG students. We have students learning to play the Irish Tin Whistle and the guitar. On the circle dodge ball court we are seeing some stellar strength from the 6th graders. I still have my work cut out for me as one of my 7th grade boys, as we were listing off some of Jesus’ miracles, told me that Jesus turned three stone jars filled with water into milk, which he then fed to his dog. That must be from one of those hidden Summer camp pyramid fun. gospels! Fortunately, when I asked the boys what our mission here at school is, they were able to shout out, “We are men for others!” Soon it will be time for our Thanksgiving Family Mass and Thanksgiving Banquet, one of the many wonderful traditions we’ve created over the years. It’s a great day for our families who get to experience the more traditional Thanksgiving Feast. It was a great event when it was for 20 families - and on many levels, a greater event now that it is for almost seven times more families! Please God, I hope it doesn’t rain that day! Another tradition is our year-end appeal asking for financial support for the schools. The campaign goes during December and you will be receiving my letter in the mail soon! We hope you will partner with us in our endeavors of breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Thank you and God bless you for your prayerful support of this wonderful endeavor. I’m proud to be part of the entire enterprise. Peter Pabst, S.J. Founding President

Student Sponsorship dollars make a difference in the lives of children… Letter excerpts from our students to their sponsors “It is my pleasure to be writing to you again. I have had such a wonderful time these past two years. Thanks to you I have been given these awesome memories. You have given me the opportunity to do things I probably never would have had the chance to do anywhere else. Summer camp, for example, was a blast. I had a chance to meet new counselors and new teachers there…” Daniela, 8th grade “I started the year well and I am planning on doing very well for the rest of the year because I want to go to Bellarmine. Then eventually go to Santa Clara University and get accepted to the police academy. Last week we went to a beautiful place called Yosemite where we scaled Glacier Point and Half Dome. We all had so much fun, even the hard hiking each day. We learned about brotherhood and teamwork and created a memory that will last a lifetime…” Oscar, 8th grade

Our Lady of Grace students at Summer Camp

“I am really happy to have gotten accepted to Our Lady of Grace. The teachers are really cool. The class I like most is literature because we get to read detailed books. For example, right now we are reading The Circuit, by Francisco Jimenez. The Circuit is very detailed and it is funny. I also got to go to summer camp. It was awesome, and I really enjoyed it a lot! I got to ride horses, swim, and go on an amazing hike! I had a lot of fun at summer camp and, so far, I am having a great time at school…” Michelle, 6th Grade

Eighth grade students hiking at Yosemite

“I loved Saturday School at Vasona Park; it was really fun and amazing. I loved the lake and the white, fluffy birds. I also enjoyed the small train and the sports that we played over there. They were really fun and amazing because the teachers and moms made the sports fun. Last Saturday we also went to San Francisco. I had fun at the Golden Gate Bridge. We also visited the fort under the bridge. The fort is actually older than the Golden Gate Bridge. I could see Alcatraz from where I was standing. We all walked to the middle of the bridge and took a picture. San Francisco is great!...” Sandra, 6th Grade

“Some goals for the future are to have the best grades that I have ever had. Ms. Bennett said that everyone thinks eighth grade is the hardest in junior high, but it is really seventh grade because it is where you have to grow and learn to be an example. I really want to follow that saying. When I graduate from eighth grade, I want to go to Bellarmine College Preparatory. If I get into Bellarmine College Preparatory and graduate, I will rocket up to Stanford University and study to be a zoologist for big and small cats. I will then write poetry and voyage through a world of books. Those are my basic goals so I can live a good life. I enjoy what I have and spend time with my family. Thank you again for all your support…” Hector, 7th grade

Saturday School at Fort Point located “You have no idea how thankful I am for underneath the Gold Gate Bridge your generosity because you not only sponsored me for one year, or two years, but for three years! I am so grateful. I really appreciate all you have done for me. One of my many dreams is to go to Archbishop Mitty High School. I would then like to attend Santa Clara University and major in computer graphic design. I am also looking forward to meeting new people on all of my adventures! Thank you again and again for all your support!…” Diego, 8th grade
