BATON ROUGE, La. – Jasmine Norton had a match-high 12 kills and Christa Alvarez collected a match-best 13 digs but the University of Arkansas volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to LSU (25-13, 25-18, 25-20) Saturday afternoon at the Maravich Center in Baton Rouge, La. With the loss, the Razorbacks fall to 18-13 overall and 1010 in Southeastern Conference play. With her fifth kill of the match, Norton moved past Yarleen Santiago (1997-99) into sixth place on Arkansas’ all-time kills list. With her effort Saturday, Norton now has 1,350 career kills to her credit. The Rowlett, Texas, native also moved into fourth place on the program’s total attempts list. Norton, now with 3,522 career attacks, surpassed Denise Baez (1994-96) in that category. In the first set, the teams went out to an even start but LSU (19-11, 12-8 SEC) went on a mini-run to take a 10-6 lead and force a timeout out of Arkansas. The home team continued to apply the pressure by winning three of the next four points to go out to a 13-7 lead. Later in the set, the Tigers doubled up on Arkansas, 22-11, with a fourpoint run behind the serve of Desiree Elliott. LSU closed out the set, 25-13, with a kill from Madie Jones. Like they did in the opener, the Razorbacks won the first two points of the second set with a kill from Amanda Anderson and an LSU attack error. After exchanging points, the Tigers turned a 7-6 lead into a five-point advantage after a tandem block. Trailing by eight, Arkansas put together a run to pull to within five. With Adriana Vazquez at the service line, the Razorbacks got kills from Norton and Raymariely Santos. However, Jones and Michele Williams combined for a block to clinch the set for LSU, 25-18. A combo block by Amanda Anderson and Kasey Heckelman gave Arkansas an early 4-2 lead in set three. After an overpass kill by Charmaine Whitmore put the team ahead, 7-3. The home team cut their deficit to one but the Razorbacks responded with three consecutive kills to force an LSU timeout. The Tigers battled back and tied the score at 17-all with a service ace that trickled over the net to find the floor. After trading side outs, the Tigers went on a four-point surge to make their finale push of the match and lead, 23-19. A service error by LSU broke the momentum but the home team recovered to close out the set, 25-20, on an Arkansas lift violation and secure the straight-set victory.
