FAYETTEVILLE – Jasmine Norton and Kelli Stipanovich combined for 42 kills in a fiveset loss to Georgia (25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11) Sunday afternoon at Barnhill Arena. Norton had a match-high 22 kills to go along with 20 kills from Stipanovich. Norton, Stipanovich and Raymariely Santos each posted double-double performances in the setback. Sunday’s match was just the fourth five-set match of the season for the Razorbacks. In the decisive fifth set, Arkansas (12-8, 4-5 SEC) won three of the first four points and went out to a 7-4 lead after a kill from the Norton. When the teams switched sides, the Razorbacks held an 8-6 advantage. Consecutive kills out of the back row by Stipanovich extended the home team’s lead to 10-7, but Georgia (9-11, 5-5 SEC) won the next three points to tie the score. The Bulldogs won five of the final six points to seal the five-set victory. In the opening set, the score was tied five times down the final stretch before Georgia arrived at set point behind consecutive kills from Luft. Norton found the floor to keep the Razorbacks alive but on the next point, Luft posted her seventh kill of the set to send the Bulldogs to the early match lead, 25-23. The Bulldogs got within striking distance in the second set. However, Arkansas closed out the set with five straight points, including a pair of blocks from Heckelman and the final putaway from Stipanovich to clinch the set, 25-17. After giving up a .308 hitting percentage in the first set, the Razorbacks held Georgia to a .100 mark in game two. In set three a couple of runs of points this time by UGA, pulled the visitors even and the score was tied, 20-20. The Bulldogs continued their run with three points in a row to take control of play. With Arkansas down two set points, Norton registered a kill to extend the game. On the next play, however, Luft closed out the set to give her team the 2-1 match lead. The teams traded points at the beginning of set four but a three-point push by the Bulldogs gave them an 11-8 lead and forced a Pulliza timeout. Arkansas recovered and rallied to win nine of the next 11 points to grab control of the set. The Razorbacks never trailed the rest of the way. An extended rally late in the set, aided by two digs from Santos, put the home team ahead, 23-20. On the team’s second try, Stipanovich posted a kill to win the set and force game five.

In the opening stages of the second set, neither team could distance from the other and battled to a 10-10 tie. The Razorbacks won the next four points behind two kills each from Acosta and Anderson. The home team held on to its lead until Ole Miss strung together five points in a row to take a 21-19 lead. After a service error from Kasey Heckelman, Ole Miss had another set point but Norton kept the Razorbacks alive with another kill. Stipanovich gave Arkansas set point with a solo block and an attack error by Wells on the ensuing play gave the Razorbacks the set, 28-26. Arkansas closed out the match with another come-from-behind effort in the third set. With the score tied at 13-13, the Rebels put together a four-point run to take control of play. From that point, the teams played even until a kill by Regina Thomas gave Ole Miss a 21-18 lead. The Razorbacks responded with a 4-0 push of their own and took a 22-21 lead, capped by a service ace from Norton. The visitors tied the score on the next play with a kill by Wells but Heckelman brought Arkansas to match point with a kill on an overpassed ball. On the team’s second chance to close out the match, Norton pounded the final kill of the night to send the Razorbacks to the straight-set victory.
