Welcome to Colorado Springs! Larry Ribits, Publisher
Colorado Springs has an abundance of attractions and venues that bring people to this community from far and wide. The region is also blessed with an organization – Visit Colorado Springs – that has done a marvelous job of marketing Colorado Springs and all its assets to the rest of America and the world. What is truly worth noting is how Colorado Springs keeps upping its game with the introduction of new venues and destination locations. The Cover of Relocate 2 Colorado Springs celebrates two locations that have opened recently – The Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center and Weidner Field (home of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks). The third destination location celebrated is the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum, that opened in mid-2020 during the height of the pandemic. Having recently visited the museum, while the Tokyo Olympics were underway, was definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
Special thanks to City Communications for use of the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center images we used on the cover. 3

Community Profiles Colorado Springs
An enviable quality of life, a location impossible to duplicate and a history that is both unique and diverse has made Colorado Springs a thriving community that is always moving forward. As Colorado’s second largest city and largest when defined by area, Colorado Springs is a year-round destination for tourists, business and future residents because of its impressive surroundings, broad array of regional assets and a long list of accolades as a place to live, work and play. Colorado Springs was the dream of General William Jackson Palmer who envisioned a city of the future where culture, temperance and gracious living would define the community. Fountain Colony, the original name for Palmer’s young city, quickly became known as Colorado Springs – a derivative of the bawdy mining and milling town of Colorado City and the therapeutic mineral springs of nearby Manitou Springs. The discovery of gold in Cripple Creek brought thousands anxious to find their fortune: promoters, industrialists and gamblers - even artists and writers - came to what was the richest city per capita in the nation. Extravagant homes built by miners who became millionaires are now an exclusive neighborhood near downtown that is also home to Colorado College. When the gold played out, civic minded business men led by Spencer Penrose, determined that Colorado Springs’ natural beauty, Pikes Peak and the automobile would make it a unique tourist destination. From these beginnings the city has seen continuous and sometimes explosive growth. Its location along with generally sunny and mild weather has made it an ideal location for military training and defense related high-tech industries. Small business is “BIG” in Colorado Springs and tourism is still the third largest part of the economy. Then there is Colorado Springs’ long history with Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Today, as Olympic City USA, Colorado Springs is home to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), U.S. Paralympics, 20+ National Olympic Governing Bodies, the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center, more than 50 National Sports Organizations and the just opened United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum and Hall of Fame. It’s no wonder that LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION is spot on when talking about Colorado Springs.

Old Colorado City (Historic District)
Was once the town of Colorado City, but is now a neighborhood within Colorado Springs. The commercial district is on the National Register of Historic Places (1982). Founded during the 1859 Pikes Peak Gold Rush, Colorado City was both a supply hub and gold ore processing center for the mining industry, serving up to some 50 coal mines located in the Colorado Springs area. It was even the capital of the Colorado Territory for a short time. Today, Old Colorado City (OCC in local jargon) is a funky neighborhood west of Colorado Springs. It’s a popular tourist area you can easily make into a fulfilling day trip exploring souvenir shops or cutting-edge boutiques, eating at its many award winning restaurants or finding just the right painting, sculpture or yard art decoration at one of the local art galleries. And OCC is home to some the most popular events of the Pikes Peak Region like the three-day Territory Days street fair or the whimsical Alice in Wonderland-themed Mad Hatter Dat. There’s always something to do in OCC.

Fountain
u o F
Fountain Valley is about ten miles south of Colorado Springs and thirty miles north of Pueblo. Fountain is the only incorporated city in the valley. Widefield and Security are high density housing developments. All three are neighbors of Fort Carson, one of the youngest posts of the U.S. Army. The growth of Fort Carson has had a profound positive impact on the valley. New housing, businesses and retail opportunities keep sprouting up all over the area adding to an already bustling community. People like living in Fountain Valley because of the great schools, small town charm, affordability and proximity to big city amenities.
Fort Carson 15,015
Average Household Income: $63,000 Population: 31,443 Median Home List Price: $355,000 (2021) With its front-range vista, Fountain enjoys long stretches of sunny days and mild temperatures. The community has coupled the wide-open character of its old west roots with responsible planning for measured growth and infrastructure development. Its mission is to build a sustainable community that is not only focused on the future but on preservation of its beautiful historical landscape. Fountain is one of the few remaining places where housing is not only affordable but offers a selection from planned neighborhoods with distinctive charm to open acreage for custom homes and “ranch style” living. With a strong military presence in the area, the community has a high commitment to education. Fountain-Fort Carson District 8 school system has received many awards, including the “Leadership in Learning Award” for student achievement. The community also strives to cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit through small business development and support of the Fou nta in Va lle y Cham b e r o f Commerce. Security & Widefield Average Household Income: $67,000 Population: 39,6125 (2021) Median Home List Price: Security and Widefield $350,000 (2021) Security was established in 1953 and was named to make prospective residents feel safe. Widefield started in the mid-60’s when Widefield Homes began construction of this community. Security/Widefield comprise the largest unincorporated area in Colorado with growth projections that could potentially triple the numbers of homesteads over the next 20 years. Widefield School District 3 serves Security/Widefield and takes on several key functions normally performed by municipal governments. The school district manages the Community Center (Widefield Community Education and Recreation Services), oversees the Security Public Library and has built trails and parks in the area for the citizens of the school district. Its students enjoy a wide variety of curriculum choices in up to date facilities with low student/ teacher ratios. Planning for the district is a key component of success as it positions itself to meet the demands that come with the future growth expectations.

Military
The military is a major presence in Colorado Springs with five major installations, numerous commands and headquarters, including the new United States Space Command (USSPACECOM) calling it home. A thriving defense industry is one of the cornerstones of Colorado Springs’ economy. The military also has a major impact in shaping the “personality” of the Pikes Peak region.

united States Space force - Space operations Command The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is the newest branch of the Armed Forces. It was established December 20, 2019, with enactment of the Fiscal year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. The USSF was established within the Department of the Air Force, meaning the Secretary of the Air Force has overall responsibility for the USSF, under the guidance and direction of the Secretary of Defense. Additionally, a four-star general known as the Chief of Space Operations (CSO) serves as the senior military member of the USSF. The CSO is a full member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The USSF is a military service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. The USSF Headquarters and Office of the CSO are located in the Pentagon, just like the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) was re-designated as Headquarters, Space Operations Command, at Peterson Space Force Base, one of three Field Commands within the USSF. As a new military service, the U.S. Space Force will leverage the Air Force for more than 75 percent of its enabling functions to significantly reduce cost and avoid duplication.

peterson Space force Base
INSTALLATIONS
Located east of Colorado Springs and adjacent to the Colorado Springs Airport off US Highway 24, Peterson SFB traces its roots to the Colorado Springs Army Air Base established on May 6, 1942. On December 13, 1942, it was renamed Peterson Army Air Base in memory of 1st Lt. Edward Peterson who was killed during takeoff from the base on a training mission. Known as Pete Field the base served at varying times as a training site for photoreconnaissance, bomber, and fighter missions.
Schriever Space force Base Schriever Space Force Base boasts several mission sets, including three Space Deltas whose missions are focused on satellite control networks, cyberspace, GPS, satellite communications and protecting and defending operations. Located 12 miles east of Colorado Springs and home to 8,000 military and civilian employees, the base is known as the “Master of Space.” It is also home to Joint Task Force-Space Defense, the 527th Space Aggressors Squadron, Missile Defense Agency, Air Force Tactical Exploitation of National Capabilities unit and the U.S. Navy Observatory Alternate Master Clock. In June 1988, Falcon Air Force Station was designated Falcon Air Force Base. And on June 5, 1998, Falcon Air Force Base was renamed Schriever Air Force Base in honor of retired Gen. Bernard A. Schriever, who pioneered development of the nation’s ballistic missile programs. Schriever Space Force Base is the only Air Force base that has been named after a person who was living at the time. Gen. Schriever died June 20, 2005. Today, Schriever Space Force Base makes up a portion of PetersonSchriever Garrison, as part of the U.S. Space Force restructure. It operates remote tracking stations, satellite operations centers and other command and control facilities around the world. These facilities monitor satellites during launch, command and control satellites while they are in orbit, fix satellite anomalies when they occur and dispose of satellites when they reach the end of their useful life. More information about Schriever SFB can be found at their website: www.schriever.spaceforce.mil
Today, it is home to the Peterson-Schriever Garrison which provides support to missile warning, missile defense, and space control missions worldwide. The Garrison hosts more than 50 mission partners on Peterson SFB, including the 302nd Airlift Wing (Reserve), as well as several headquarters including Space Operations Command, three Space Deltas, North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command, and Army Strategic Command, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command. Collectively, the Peterson-Schriever Garrison consists of a medical group, two mission support groups and numerous staff agencies that provide health care, mission readiness support, communication and information technology, security, civil engineering, fire protection, environmental management, manpower, personnel, logistics, contracting, base services and housing support for Peterson SFB, Schriever SFB, and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station in Colorado, Thule Air Base in Greenland, New Boston Space Force Station in New Hampshire, and Kaena Point Space Force Station in Hawaii. The garrison supports more than 18,400 personnel who manage an annual budget of $285 million and administer nearly $1.1 billion in contracts. Sharing a flight line with the City of Colorado Springs allows Peterson SFB personnel to work closely with the City to ensure vital services are available when the mission requires it. The 302nd AW is the only Air Force Reserve wing with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) to aid in fighting wildfires. The fire department and explosive ordnance disposal teams are also available to the Airport at any time. More information about Peterson SFB can be found at their website, www.peterson.spaceforce.mil
united States air force academy
Image courtesy of United States Air Force Academy
The mission of the United States Air Force Academy is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the Air Force and Space Force in service to our nation. Authorized in 1954, the United States Air Force Academy came to Colorado in 1955 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. At the same time construction began in Colorado Springs on the permanent site of the Academy, which was occupied by the wing of cadets in 1958. As the training ground for tomorrow’s Air Force and Space Force leaders the scenic 18,500-acre campus doubles as university and boot camp. While many cities in the United States support colleges and universities or have military bases within their boundaries only a few have a facility that combines the unique attributes of both into one. The Academy has become a well-known landmark of Colorado Springs and a reliable contributor to the quality of life shared by all in the Pikes Peak region. With its “Commitment to Excellence” the United States Air Force Academy enjoys a rich history with its host community and looks forward to meeting the challenges of the future through the accomplishments of its cadets. www.usafa.edu.

fort Carson Fort Carson – The Mountain Post, and home to the 4 th Infantry Division, sits on 137,000 acres just south of Colorado Springs. It owns an additional 236,000-acre training site in southeastern Colorado. Fort Carson is the state's 3rd largest employer and accounts for $2.4 billion economic impact in El Paso County. Named after the famous frontiersman, Kit Carson, the fort was established in 1942, three weeks after Pearl Harbor. Currently the post has a population of approximately 26,000 active duty military, 31,000 Family members and is served by over 5,700 civilian employees. The post’s 4th Infantry Division has armored, Stryker, aviation and sustainment brigades. The "Ivy" Division celebrated its centennial December 10, 2017. Throughout the years, the mission of Fort Carson has remained as it was in the past - training troops to be combat ready. It's extensive on post training range areas and Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site provide ideal facilities for large force-on-force maneuver training and live-fire training. In 1995, the troops of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) moved to Fort Carson. In 1999, Fort Carson became the headquarters for the 7th Infantry Division, which is in charge of training National Guard personnel. It was also home to the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment that deployed in 2003 in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. In 2006, the 3rd ACR left Fort Carson for Fort Hood, Texas. In 2009, 4th Infantry Division once again took up residency at the Mountain Post. Additional changes are always underway at the fort, but it is safe to say Fort Carson will continue to have a significant impact on Colorado Springs and the surrounding area. www.carson.army.mil
Cheyenne Mountain Space force Station Cheyenne Mountain SFS has its origins in the Cold War as a hightech underground complex that housed the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD). NORAD provided early warning radar protection from aircraft, missiles and space vehicle threats directed at the United States and Canada. Since the end of the Cold War activities have not diminished at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex but have evolved to meet the realities of a changing world. The 4.5 acre, 15 steel building complex, constructed in tunnels and chambers cut into Cheyenne Mountain’s rock, host multiple commands: North American Aerospace Command (NORAD), United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) and U.S. Space Force. It is operated by the Peterson-Schriever Garrison and is the central collection and coordination center for a worldwide system of satellites, radars and sensors that provide early warning of any missile, air or space threat to North America. It is also the focal point for air defense operations that would counter air, missile or space attacks on the continent. Cheyenne Mountain is a unique facility apart from the fact that it is 2,000 feet underground, has 25-ton blast doors to protect it from nuclear attack and is essentially an underground city built on springs. It is a joint and bi-national command made up of personnel from the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Canadian Armed Forces, with command centers staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
