The Palace, The Public Theatre : Re-interpretation of Flinders Street Station

- roject ype: u„lic Major Thesis Project, 2012 Supervisor: Melanie Dodd, Michael Spooner

PROJECT DESCRIPTION DzThe Palace, The Pu„lic Theatredz ešamines the civic role of Flinders Street Station through a reconsideration of the station concourse and river edge. Flinders Station historically contained a diversity of functions, including a „allroom, li„rary and roof running track, that provided for „oth train commuters and city workers. Its function was therefore never just a train station, „ut ešamined the collective spectacle of the city and its inha„itants. In seeking to readdress the station concourse and river edge, this project drew from the economy of theatre and stage to re-imagine the grand spectacle of the train station. The proposal removes the current detritus from years of ad-hoc development „y way of: returning the edge of the concourse to its original eštents, removing the current ticket „arriers and removing the contemporary roof. The design retains the heritage roof structure along St ilda Road, „ut reclads it to minimise its impact from Federation S“uare. A series of new ǎstagesǯ address the needs of „oth commuters and the general pu„lic. The additions form light wells to provide natural light to the platforms „eneath the concourseǢ a grand stair to a covered upper storey. The upper storey services the historical wing containing the „allroom and li„rary, and features a new caf¹ and „ar. Access is provided from the river edge to the concourse „y way of a spiralling caf¹ that serves to include the concourse in the activities centred on the arra River. The project re-imagines the station as the site of civic spectacle, what was originally har„oured „y the Victorian Railway Institute, and the Coƥee Palaces of late 19th Century Mel„ourne. In doing so, the project sustains the original richness of the Station, whilst pursuing the idea of the city as relevant to our contemporary identity.

PUBLIC SPACE, THE THEATRE STAGE

The design has „een derived „y the ideas of the pu„lic space as a ǎtheatre stageǯ
