In Morocco people look for shade, a way to attract people and create meeting spots is by providing a roof. Our roof spans over all public space in and around the building Outdoor life is more important so an open character to the building will make it more inviting to appropriate the space In the streets you find diversified prosperity meaning that with high illiteracy rates this

By improving the connection both visually and physically, visitors from the museum find themselves invited to explore the rest of the facilities Kvarteret Krubban has to offer.

Since these buildings date back from 19th century I wanted to materialize the outbuild in a way that would work well with the yellow colour of the buildings. I made this image on site where I found the corten steel working really well with the yellow. It inspired me for the outbuild.

This project includes an urban restructuring of the Hamerstraat area, the program of a theatre, library and music school and a proposal for the architecture and interior of the theatre.

Left: Impression of the theatre lobby overlooking the IJ.

THEATRE AMSTERDAM

Hamerstraat Area in Amsterdam North side is a grade A location along the IJ waters. However it is currently used as an industrial area meaning valuable public space is not used to its full potential. Most of the watersides are unaccessible for the public. Building a theatre there will create a spin off for the development of the rest of the area, will give something to the citizens of Amsterdam north to be proud of and to bridge the public activities on the other side of the IJ.

Dwelling ? ? Dwelling

When Amsterdam was growing as harbor, there was a need for shipyards and labour, therefore there was a strong relation betweeen the programs on the waterfront. However with the harbor moving further out the city that relation is disapeared. A new relation should be established in order for the area not to become secluded. The waterfront is popular for residential areas so transformations are allready taking place. however this requires other facilities and infrastructure than shipyards.

The built of a metrostation is an opportrunity to create a public facilities strip in the extention of that. Infrastructure should be improved to connect the different dwellig areas to the public facilities.

URBAN INTERVENTION Mobility

by creating a clear main route on the site that is connected to the active places the structure and accessibility of the site becomes more public.

Instead of bestemmings verkeer, doorgaand verkeer > activate livability

by creating a main slow-trafficfriendly route which connects the sixhhaven with the vliegenbos and also passes by the green area’s in the IJplein it creates a green network in which our site can contribute. it has three ‘insteekhavens’ to offer which can appeal to leisure activities.

Improving slow traffic connection from sixhaven to vliegenbos

Identity Public Space

certain outside spaces in the area are already activated with public program. This should be used and encouraged. by keeping these spaces as they are it can be the spin off for the area -especially the hotel de Goudfazant - and maintain its good reputation.

At the industrial area some elements striked me to be important to keep or to refer back to in the future plans. -Typology of blocks connected in an organical way, cheap form follows cheap function - the relation between employers on top floor looking down over the working floors downstairs. visual relationship between different activities taking place on different levels. to relate these principals with the idea of Profit from activated activities the city and the community andpublic a change of program these references show what architecutre could translate the ideas of these principals.

city by making a main route it connects all currently public active area’s. two area’s can help the activation and support the network of leisure and green activities. the profile of the Gedempte Hamerkanaal is quite wide, this gives space for a green strip to develop along that street. this makes it more attractive to people.

Create network of public activities along axis

community

three harbors are connected to the artery of the site, they all have potential to develop leisure activities along. by opening the views this becomes visible.

by improving public transportation networks the site also becomes accessible for tourists and people with no own transportation. this can activate nightlife and leisure which attracts people from outside the community Amsterdam North.

18

Expand public transportation > connect to the metropolitan city

the other dotted plot is enclosed by water on three sides and distinguises it from other area’s

by placing the artiry in the middle of the site and not along the waterfront a play of visible and invisible connection to the water exisits, in the same time the whole area can benifit from the qualities of the waterfront instead of only the actual ‘front row’. Profit from harbors allong the IJ by opening up the views

According to Leon Krier a true city contains of Res economica and Res Republica. This Hybrid building also contains these elements. The generic modular base has the architectural articulation of res economica, fitting into the surrounding architectural materialisation and articulation. The Theatre, res republica communicates with the rest of the city and other public spaces around the waterfront. As height in the time of churchbuilding was a way to show, nowadays lights are a way to attract and iconize buildings. With the light materialiteit 41 architecture a visual connection between north and south is realised.
