M.Arch Thesis: Rotate_Shift_Expand This thesis serves as a thorough investigation of spacial transformations in relation to architecture, focusing primarily on the three movements of ROTATE, SHIFT, and EXPAND. These arrangements affect experience, interaction, and program to a non-specific hypothetical site. After cataloging a multitude of options, details, and arrangements this investigation is proposed at the interactive and architectural scale of public spaces and programs.

Temporary outdoor programs were studied and placed in the same representation [diagrams] of potential desired [rotate] movements that would enhance the programmatic needs. This matrix allowed easy experimentation of new program, spaces, perspectives, and movements.

SHIFT allows users to interact with the for and personalize the space to their needs. The constant reconfiguration of the final design expresses a shifting and transformable space.

Community Design: Mission Hill Parcel 10 is home to the transitional community of graduate students and young professionals, Parcel 10’s residential top floors are organized into one and two bedroom compact apartments totaling in 74 units with 94 beds. The residential floors are also organized with scattered public areas to provide strong interactions and create a sense of community. The lower two floors provide cultural spaces for the community. The building shifts through an abstract relationship to the surrounding buildings and circulation, through the reliefs and pockets in the shifted floor plates, community spaces are revealed and publicly punctured through the façade. Jamaica Pond Friend’s School Through the site analysis of Jamaica Pond Park, the topographical changes in elevation informed many of the programmatic level changes for the school. Existing paved pathways on site often experienced very subtle vertical changes creating a disconnect between the park and the pond. The shape and location of the school activates the steepest area of the site in order to exaggerate a connection from the approach to the pond.

Moon Island Funeral Chapel In the Neptune Memorial Gardens there are multiple ways one can meander to find the docks and Neptune Memorial Reef. Columbariums line the pathways that bring users to the Memorial Gardens. The experience of moving from the chapel, through the columbariums, and to the docks is reflected through a material transformation. The scale of materials symbolically decays as one moves from larger public areas to more intimate and private spaces.

Seven Cycles Bike Manufacturing Facility The approach and use for this facility were inspired by Seven Cycles process of designing and building custom bicycles. The industrial mechanics of bike culture influenced material choices in this project. Metal mesh, wood, and concrete are three contrasting materials used and layered to create different visual connections between the public and private spaces in the facility. The approach invites users to appreciate the process of custom bike design in the order of manufacturing operations.

Personal Woodworking Woodworking and furniture design is a personal passion of mine. I enjoy the process of designing, making, creating, and working with materials as they evolve and become functional pieces that can be artfully displayed in my house. I find the whole process very therapeutic and rewarding.
