You’ve been pronounced “husband and wife,” so now it’s time to kick off those heels and celebrate! This is a time for you and your brand new husband to relax, mingle, dance, chat and thoroughly enjoy the company of your friends and loved ones. While finding the ideal reception location is one of the biggest and most important wedding-related tasks, have no fear…we’re here to help. 4

For a sensuous pause before a high-energy party, have a small jazz quartet set the tone with a wine and micro-beer tasting served with cheese selections. PREMIER BRIDE • 3

RECEPTION Below are six simple steps to finding the right reception site for your perfect day. Step 1: What to do first The biggest question regarding the reception is “where?” Before you can work on this question, however, you’ll need to know a couple of things. What style of wedding do you envision and how big? Obviously, a casual, relaxed summer afternoon reception would require a completely different reception site than a formal, elegant winter evening reception so clarify the type of wedding (and the time of year) you both desire first. Once that’s been established, determine the rough guest list, including all interested parties, you and your groom, and each set of parents. Of course, you’ll also need to consider your budget as this will have a great influence on the number of guests you can afford to have. Once you’ve made these critical decisions, it’s time to start looking for the ideal reception site. As with anything, the more time you have, the better. Some choice reception sites get booked one to two years in advance, particularly for prime dates. Step 2: Start the search Local bridal publications like Premier Bride, the Internet, bridal shows and married friends are all good sources of potential reception sites. If you have no idea where to hold your reception, try hotels, banquet halls, restaurants, community centers and country clubs. Other less obvious options are country inns, historic homes or mansions, city parks, college or university facilities, art galleries, museums and boats. Each location offers its own unique style and ambiance. 4 • PREMIER BRIDE

There are two basic types of reception facilities: on-site and off-site. Most on-site locations provide the majority of services you will need for your reception: catering, beverages, tables, chairs, tableware, linens and serving staff making this a very convenient option. The facilities normally charge on a per person basis, and have a minimum guest requirement. Such locations include hotels, private clubs and restaurants. Off-site locations offer the use of the facility only, providing no other services. You supply nearly everything yourself paying a flat fee for the use of the site. The nice thing about off-site locations is the freedom to do everything your own way, and to have more choices; although this can also mean more work! Narrow down your search by focusing on those sites that seem to best meet your needs depending on your style, season and estimated guest count. Once you’ve selected some possibilities, it’s time to go on a road trip with your fiancé, maid of honor and/or Mom and check out the sites in person. Step 3: Evaluating reception sites Now the real work begins. Every site offers advantages and disadvantages, and your job is to sift through all of the features of each site to find the best one for your wedding while keeping your budget in mind. Here are some factors to consider. Location. The reception site should be no more than a 30-minute drive away from the ceremony location. A longer drive than that is really asking too much of your guests! If the location is difficult to find, or will offer special challenges to get there (say, located near a football stadium that

RECEPTION has a home game on your wedding day), you should consider providing transportation for your guests from the ceremony site, and back to their cars after the reception. Size and layout. Will everything happen in one big room, or in separate rooms for the cocktail hour, dinner, dancing? Will it comfortably hold the number of tables you’ll need, and will everyone dine in the same room? Is there room for a band or DJ, and for cocktail hour musicians, if you’re having them? Privacy. If your venue does multiple events, find out if there are other bookings at the same time or on the same day as yours. If so, ensure that there will be adequate privacy and separation for your celebration. There should also be ample time in between events to allow your caterer or other

service people to set up or break down your party. Parking. Make sure there is convenient, well-lighted, ample parking for your guests, and if not, find out if valet service is available. Technical details. Whether you intend to have a DJ or a band, inquire about possible restrictions regarding the type, volume or duration of music. Be sure to confirm that there is an adequate power supply for speakers, mixers and amplifiers, or good acoustics for string and wind instruments. Some sites have built-in public-address systems which can be used for introductions and toasts. If your site of choice doesn’t offer this equipment, make sure your DJ or musicians can provide it. Room décor. Most sites offer a neutral background to work with, but make

RECEPTION sure the flooring, wall coverings and colors will work with the style and season of your wedding. Services offered. Be clear with each site visited and know exactly what is and is not included. From catering and wait staff, to candles and chairs, get those details up front. A note about outdoor receptions If you’re planning on outdoor reception, it’s critical to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. Planning for an outdoor reception is usually much more work overall because you have to provide for everything from the salad forks to the tents to the chairs, and you may need to change plans at the last minute due to the weather! For these reasons, it’s highly recommended that you use an

experienced wedding coordinator if you want an outdoor reception. This will ease your workload, and your stress, immensely. Down to details As with any wedding vendor, make sure that all details are outlined in writing, and use a credit card whenever possible when making payments so that you have more protection in the unlikely event of a problem. You should feel very comfortable with your contact person, and feel that he/she respond in a timely and efficient manner to your questions and requests. Visit’s online wedding planner for a comprehensive list of questions to ask potential reception sites, and for other great wedding planning help.

cuisine & catering SAYING “I DO” TO

It’s sad but true that stereotypical wedding food sets the bar pretty low. Guests tend to anticipate chicken breast, rice pilaf, a side of steamed veggies, and a basket of dinner rolls. Luckily, catering services have certainly raised the bar in recent years, and personal, memorable, delicious meals are becoming the new normal. 4

Budget wisely

Don’t forget that taxes and gratuities can be a large chunk of your food and beverage costs so make sure you’re including these in your budget. PREMIER BRIDE • 9

CATERING Nowadays, caterers are offering more bold flavors, meaningful meals, and fun experiences. Sit-down dinners are gravitating toward family-style, while mix-and-mingle meals are also increasingly popular. You might offer a variety of food stations or even food trucks serving everything from tacos to Chinese food, and late-night snacks are always a huge hit. To get really personal, think about hosting each of your favorite meals. The bride’s might be a nice juicy steak and the groom’s might be chicken and waffles — and that’s okay! The more you embrace what makes you unique, the more memorable your wedding will be. In addition to unique meals, locally-sourced, quality ingredients are also taking center stage. Couples like to support local purveyors in their community, as well as enjoy the freshness of a farm-to-table feast. 7 STEPS TO HIRING A CATERER From research to getting it in writing, we’ll walk you through it. Step 1: Start the search. As you call caterers to inquire after their services, make sure to have as much information on hand as possible. They’ll want to know your wedding date, time, approximate number of guests, and whether you’d like a sit-down or buffetstyle meal. If you already have some ideas for your menu or any specific limitations (think vegetarian or gluten free), let the caterer know. Ask to see sample wedding menus and references. Step 2: Decide on your style. Think about the vibe of your wedding. Is it a classic ballroom affair or a rustic outdoor bash? How formal? Do you want the food to be posh or playful? Such details will help a caterer determine what they 12 • PREMIER BRIDE

can offer that falls in line with your vision. Step 3: Schedule a tasting. Make sure to go to all tastings and speak up! Don’t be afraid to ask if they can tweak something to your tastes. Step 4: Finalize the menu. .Gather inspiration from magazines and websites, think about weddings you’ve attended, and ask friends for favorites and failures. Consult your caterer and trust them. They’ve seen lots of weddings and know what works best for the number of people, time of day, and location, so take their professional advice to heart. Step 5: Calculate the cost. Facilities with in-house catering departments may have a minimum charge or set-up fee, while an independent caterer will usually work within any reasonable budget. Keep in mind that buffets are usually priced higher, since they’ll have to account for a little more per person. Find out if your caterer will provide table linens, plates, glasses, crystal, silverware, and serving pieces. Step 6: Hire the servers. Your caterer will give you their expert opinion, but a safe bet is one server for every 10 to 12 guests for a sit-down dinner, and two servers for every 50 guests for a buffetstyle dinner. If you’re having a full open bar, that will require more help — one bartender for every 50 to 75 guests. Step 7: Get it in writing. Sign a contract and make a deposit only after you have all of the details spelled out: date, time, food items by course, beverages and bar guidelines, number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of cocktail hour, time meal is served, contact people, number of wait staff and bartenders, linens, terms of payment, and liability insurance.

with flowers

Through decades of evolving wedding traditions and styles, certain things remain constant like a bride’s white dress and gorgeous flowers to adorn the day. Though we think of flowers as an accent, they’re so much more at a wedding. Flowers help define a wedding’s colors, theme, and mood.4

WHERE TO START Without even knowing it, your floral research has probably already begun. Any time you admire a blooming centerpiece, dreamily eye flowers at the local farmers’ market, or pin a blossoming crown to your wedding Pinterest board, you’re developing your own taste in flowers. Keep doing this as you prepare to meet your florist. Create a flowers-only Pinterest board to gather images that you love, and maybe some that you don’t. It helps to have lots to show your potential florist. It’s also critical to have a set budget. FINDING A FLORIST If possible, book a florist 8 to 10 months before your wedding. Select up to four florists to meet with in-person as any more would be overwhelming. Your goal is to find someone who is organized and professional and whose style and personality meshes with your own. Have a budget in mind. Know your wedding colors and ceremony and reception locations. If you have a picture of your wedding dress and any fabric swatches from the bridesmaid dresses, bring those along as well. The right florist will take all of these elements (your style, venue, and budget) and create something special just for you. Florists know which flowers will and won’t wilt in the sun, which are best for indoors, and which will work better in a centerpiece rather than in a bouquet. Foster open communication from the start and hire someone you can trust. FOR YOU AND YOUR WEDDING PARTY You’ll first want to determine the look of your bridal bouquet. All other

FLOWERS floral pieces will take their cue from this piece. This is the perfect opportunity to bring your style and personality to the forefront. Full, rounded bouquets are gorgeous, as are cascading bouquets which are a classic choice making a modern comeback. Today’s cascades are a loose, more natural style of bouquet. Then there’s the bridal party flowers: Just as we’re seeing bridesmaids in mix-and-match dresses, we’re seeing mix-and-match bouquets more frequently and mix-and-match boutonnieres as well. Yet another way to work flowers into fashion: flower crowns! FOR THE CEREMONY If you’re having your ceremony in a place of worship, check with your

officiant for any restrictions before finalizing the flowers. Often times ceremony flowers can play double duty by adorning the church as well as the reception hall. But some churches request that flowers remain on-site for weekend services. This practice is rather outdated, but better to ask and know for sure. If you are able to use your ceremony flowers at the reception, they’re usually ideal for adorning the head, buffet, and/or gift tables. FOR THE RECEPTION There’s an endless array of options for floral reception centerpieces: elegant vases filled with cut flowers, towering candelabras with verdant accents, topiaries, scattered rose petals, assorted small vases with

Use your imagination to incorporate flowers into one-of-a-kind centerpieces that reflect your style and your wedding’s theme. Keep in mind that the height of the arrangements shouldn’t get in the way of conversation. Florists can create centerpieces at a variety of heights: all high, all low, or half and half, usually with three different styles. The key is to either make the arrangements low enough to talk over or high enough to talk under. A riser or vase that is about 24 to 32 inches will elevate above the conversation as long as the vase is narrow enough to talk around. way to go. Finish off the table with a garland of greenery laced with flowers for a gorgeous effect. If your budget allows, consider adding floral flourishes throughout the reception hall to tie everything together. Your florist might sprinkle rose petals on serving trays, or drape additional garland along the buffet tables. You can also use greenery to fill in a large room. Talk to your florist about strategically placing potted ferns or ficus plants throughout the room, and perhaps even decking these plants with small white lights for an enchanting feel. Remember that it doesn’t hurt to ask. Run any and all ideas past your florist so he/she can help you refine your vision, stay within your budget, and create a beautiful, memorable ambiance.

…afterall, you deserve it ! WE’VE BEEN NOMINATED!

FORESTHILLSBLOSSOMS.COM FLOWERS FLOWERS IN ALL SEASONS Everything has its season, and flowers are no exception. In fact, seasonality plays an even bigger role when it comes to florals. One of the most important things for you and your florist to factor into your choice of flowers is the season in which your wedding falls. You’ll find that flowers that bloom during the month of your wedding will be more affordable and will last longer than those that are out of season. Also keep in mind that around certain holidays, flowers will increase in price across the board. Let’s look at some popular flowers in each season to kickstart your search. Winter: Amaryllis, Casablanca Lily, Freesia, Gerbera Daisy, Heather Holly, Narcissus, Poinsettia, Rose, Stephanotis. 26 • PREMIER BRIDE

Spring: Peony, Sweet Pea, Lilac, Ranunculus, Hydrangea, Tulip, Calla Lily, Magnolia. Summer: Anemone, Azalea, Camellia, Daffodil, French Tulip, Hyacinth, Jasmine, Lily of the Valley, Mimosa, Pansy, Primrose, Violet. Fall: Celosia (Cockscomb), Chinese Lantern, Chrysanthemum, Crosnia, Dahlia, Statice. Year-round: Baby’s Breath, Carnation, Cattleman, Chrysanthemum, Cymbidium Orchid, Daisy, Dendrobium, Orchid, Freesia, Gardenia, Gerbera Daisy, Gladiolus, Iris, Lily, Rose, September Aster, Snapdragon, Stephanotis, Tuberose. KEEPING IT CLASSIC No doubt roses are the most widely used flower in wedding arrangements. These timeless blooms are available in three grades: fancy, extra fancy, and select. Florists rarely deal with fancy roses. These are most commonly found in supermarkets and they tend to wilt rapidly. Roses that are of top quality will last the longest. Traditional bouquets are all white and can combine an array of blossoms that are unique in shape and size. It’s also possible to have a vibrantly colored bouquet that still reflects classic styles and shapes. Whatever your wedding’s theme and style, by collaborating with a professional florist, you’re sure to have the flowers of your dreams. Work together, but always remember to trust your florist’s expertise. In so doing, your wedding flowers will be the envy of Pinterest.

WARM AND ROMANTIC using live plants Marriages may be “made in heaven,” but most are based on compromise. So usually are your wedding plans. Perhaps the site you’ve chosen for your ceremony and reception does not quite measure up to expectations. Flowers, lighting and table settings help establish a warm, romantic feeling, but maybe you want more. Many plants provide instant decoration for plain or drab rooms. The stately Ficus tree trimmed with small white lights can create an elegant wall treatment. The graceful Areca palm will form an excellent backdrop for photography and a Fern can be used in various applications: individually as a spotlight plant, in a basket holding a ficus tree, or as a leafy addition to any floral arrangements. Flowering plants, bromeliads, or

exotic foliage plants provide unlimited possibilities. Just use your imagination. To find a reputable plant company, ask your florist or talk to friends who have rented plants or attended parties where the plants stood out. When you call a plant company, ask about more than just prices. Is the delivery included? What is offered in the way of baskets or other decorative containers? Can they show you pictures of other jobs they have already done? Can you see the actual plants you’ll be renting? Most plant rental companies provide a free consultation and some even visit the wedding and reception sites if requested. Well-placed plants can hide the imperfections at your ceremony or reception site making your special day “Picture Perfect.”

Imagine a picture-perfect wedding cake. You’d probably envision a tiered confection with elegant embellishments crowned with fresh flowers, a porcelain cake topper, or the bride and groom’s initials. While such classic cakes are never out of style, there are lots of ways to freshen up tradition or even stray from it entirely, while still serving a sweet that is timeless, delicious, and uniquely you. 4

Cake Flavor Tip

If you decide on a basic tiered cake, use different flavors/fillings for each layer to appeal to more tastes. PREMIER BRIDE • 29

CAKES DESSERT DECISIONS The look and feel of your sweet treat should match the rest of your wedding day, whether that’s classic elegance, rustic romance, whimsical fun, or megawatt glam. For a black tie wedding, a traditional cake is probably the way to go. As you style your dessert, think about what speaks to you as a couple. Are you both big movie buffs? Work your love of cinema into the cake with fondant rolls of film and famous characters perched on each tier. Did the groom propose in Paris? Find a baker who can craft a veritable Eiffel Tower of cupcakes. If you have a uniquely sweet idea, seek out a professional who can bring your vision to life. TIERED STYLE There’s no end to the myriad of styles you can apply to this classic cake design. Naked cakes are becoming increasing popular, with their homespun layers of exposed cake and buttercream. For fully frosted cakes, everything from ruffles to glimmering metallic luster to colorful, illustrative designs are popular nowadays. Painted or fondant monogramming and lace details are also a fresh, elegant way to go. DECORATIVE DISPLAYS While a lone tiered cake can be a stunner, there are lots of ways to feature your dessert table as décor. Instead of just one large wedding cake, consider a few smaller tiered cakes displayed at staggered heights, or one spotlight cake surrounded by cupcakes. You can even place a small cake at the center of each dinner table so that dessert doubles as a centerpiece. 30 • PREMIER BRIDE

A LITTLE VARIETY It’s not uncommon to see a traditional cake paired with other sweets like cookies, truffles, or whole tables chock full of candy. At an outdoor or summer wedding, you might invite guests to make s’mores or build their own sundaes, complete with a well-stocked toppings bar. Do you have a donut obsession? A display brimming with deep-fried confections can be fun and whimsical. Or choose two desserts — one bride’s pick and one groom’s pick. For winter weddings, a coffee or hot chocolate bar with an array of toppings (marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint sticks) is a cozy addition. FINDING A BAKERY Whatever you decide, take advantage of all food tastings. Go with your gut and choose the dessert you deem the tastiest, but also factor in the bakery’s efficiency and professionalism. The baker should return your calls and emails in a timely manner, be flexible with your needs, and guarantee on-time service on your wedding day. PRICING Wedding cakes are typically priced by the slice, depending on the style, ingredients, size, and embellishments. Your reception site might also charge a plating fee to cut and serve the cake. THE FIRST BITE If you’re planning on a traditional cake cutting, make sure you have a knife and lifter ready to go. Traditionally, the bride grasps the knife with her right hand and the groom covers her hand with his as they cut the cake together — and the crowd goes wild!

The old saying “Take a picture; it’ll last longer” will never ring more true than on your wedding day. After months of fittings, tastings, and detailed planning, your special day will seem to come and go in the blink of an eye. PHOTOGRAPHY DETERMINE YOUR STYLE Wedding photography is more than just documenting the event. It’s about capturing the spirit of the couple and their day. Choose a photographer whose style matches yours. Formal or traditional: Posed, color photos of you, the groom, your respective families, and the wedding party and classic moments (“kiss the bride,” cakecutting, first dance, etc.) will be captured. Photojournalistic: Shot like a news event, capturing hundreds of candid moments and real emotions; more black and white photos for a timeless feel. Artistic: Special effects used to create dramatic, one-of-a-kind pieces of art. So which style is right for you? Think about what you want in the end: Frameworthy shots of you and the groom? Oodles of heartfelt moments? An artistic piece to hang on the wall? Many photographers offer a mix of these styles, so browse friends’ wedding albums, surf professionals’ websites and blogs, and clip photos from magazines to find what speaks to you. RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHERS Once you’ve established your style, it’s time to shop around. Start by collecting referrals from friends, reviewing wedding resources like Premier Bride, attending bridal shows, and scoping out local photographers’ websites and blogs; and don’t forget to consider pricing. Make a short list of potential photographers that specialize in the style you desire that suits your budget. Then, set up a phone or in-person consultation. EVALUATE YOUR OPTIONS Do I like their work? Make sure you see examples of individual photos and complete wedding albums so you 34 • PREMIER BRIDE

know what to expect in the end. Some larger studios employ more than one photographer; find out exactly who will be shooting your wedding, and view their work, specifically. Do our personalities mesh? Of all your wedding vendors, the photographer is the one you’ll be working with most closely on your big day; it’s important that your personalities click. Can you talk freely about your vision and ideas for your pictures? Do you get a sense that this person will fit in nicely with you, your fiancé, and your wedding party? Am I staying within my budget? It’s critical to have a price-point in mind before searching for and committing to a photographer. It’s disappointing to fall in love with a photographer’s work only to later discover their rates exceed your spending allowance. Do your best to meet only with photographers you can afford. KNOW WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE As you chat with photographers, it will help to know what’s usually included in wedding photography packages. Most photographers offer these elements “a la carte” or can create a custom package that meets your specific needs – don’t hesitate to ask. Here are some examples of items that might interest you. Bride & Groom’s Album: These vary in size, color, construction quality, and price; be sure to compare the size and photo quantity that various photographers offer, and make sure you’re comparing apples-to-apples. Parents’ Albums: These are smaller versions of the bride & groom albums and will include prints that have been specially selected to create a custom photo book for each family.

PHOTOGRAPHY Prints: You will probably want to order more photos for framing and gifting than what would be given to you in the bride & groom and family albums. Don’t underestimate how many extra prints you might want, as this will definitely impact your budget. Proofs: Ask your photographer how many proofs you will get and in what format (small photos, digital disc, online gallery, etc.). GET THE SPECIFICS At your consultations, learn the nitty gritty details. When is a deposit required? Do they use a backup camera? What if your photographer falls ill or has a family emergency on the day of your wedding? When will proofs be ready to view? Will online ordering be available for your guests?

It’s best to work out the details and arrange for contingencies upfront. The answers to these questions might also help you compare one photographer to another and come up with a final decision. ASK ABOUT THE EXTRAS Proposal photos: If you’re the groomto-be, hire a photographer to shoot the first step in your marriage – the proposal! Your bride will thank you later for capturing this magical moment. Engagement photos: Many photographers offer engagement shoots as part of the package. These photos are more laid-back and candid, so play up your personalities. Photobooth: These are one of the most popular trends in wedding

FUN WITH PHOTO BOOTHS capturing the excitement and emotion of your guests

A wedding is just one day, so everyone knows photos are a great way of capturing the excitement and emotion for years to come. The professional photographer usually does a great job of snapping the couple, but pics of your friends and family members celebrating with you will be great mementos going forward. In the past, couples used to leave disposable cameras at tables for guests to point and shoot, but the chance in finding a gem amongst those blurry, low-quality shots is rare, especially when kids get their hands on them. Plus, the cost of developing film is going up steadily. Instead, a fun, plucky alternative can be to get a photo booth. Photo booth rentals are becoming popular at wedding receptions. Not only do you get too see everyone in their finest for your big day, but your guests can take home a quality memory from the wedding. Photo booth rentals are different in size and output. Some give guests prints of their pictures right away, in the traditional photo booth setting, with

This is a great way to give guests a souvenir right away, especially because it’s a unique type of print. Other photo booths just continuously shoot throughout the night, and provide the couple with a digital record of all the shots taken. Then, guests could go to an online database to choose which photos they want and print them at their own convenience. The newest innovation in photo booths is a flip book which is more interactive and involves a true keepsake for everyone. With a flip book, a representative from the company is on hand acting as kind of a mini-director encouraging guests to perform skits or don playful costumes. At the end, it’s put together into a video and everyone receives a copy.

One fun way to really spice up the photos is to supply props like goofy hats, accessories, or fake mustaches for guests to poke around with. A chalkboard or dry erase board is also fun so family and friends can doodle a special message or sentiment and capture it on film. A giant, decorative frame is another fun prop to create the picturewithin-a-picture look. When deciding on a rental, choose one where you can really customize it, if you’d like. You could ask for the background to be matching the colors of the wedding, or add your names or the date to a sign at the top of the photo. But no matter how basic it is, your family members and loved ones’ smiling faces will make it a truly personal memory!

timeless themes FRESH TAKES ON

Today’s trends are mostly classic themes with a fresh twist. That’s the key to adding trendy elements to your wedding — keeping it classic with a twist is a surefire way to create a modern wedding that’s still timeless. Here’s what’s happening in wedding trends for 2017.4

Match the colors

New linens and bridesmaid dresses follow current color trends. PREMIER BRIDE • 45

2017 WEDDING TRENDS STYLE: SOFT & SATURATED Brides, of course, are still wearing gowns — in fact, sometimes they’re wearing more than one! Wearing multiple looks for the ceremony and reception is on-trend and gaining momentum as brides want to have their princess moment, then kick off their shoes and dance the night away. But if you’re keeping it classic and gown-only, you’ll see layers of lace, illusion backs with fine detailing and buttons, all sorts of sleeves, and long trains paired with cathedral-length veils. These frocks don’t only come in white: you can find them in an array of light colors like gold, blush, grey, and blue. Such soft neutral looks carry over into the bridal party with bridesmaids wearing neutral palettes and metallicsoften times mixing and matching. Of course, when they’re not wearing a barely-there color, you’ll find bridesmaids in rich jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, and amethyst purple. In short, it’s trendy to be on either end of the spectrum (pastel or highly saturated) rather than somewhere in between. In terms of menswear, colored suits are taking the place of traditional black tuxedos. Blue and grey suits have been big on the red carpet, and so this colorful trend is making its way to the wedding industry. WEDDING THEMES: PINTEREST PRETTY & KEEPING IT CLASSIC We’re living in the days of Pinterest-loving brides so it comes as little surprise that DIY weddings are still very trendy. While the classic wedding is still popular, couples are also choosing reception venues that 46 • PREMIER BRIDE

allow for a lot of creativity — sites where you pay to rent the space, but are responsible for bringing your own décor, catering, and other rentals. Lots of today’s weddings are all about ambience, and more brides are setting aside large chunks of their budget strictly for decorations. As for the type of décor, rustic weddings are still very much in style, but the trend is shifting from burlap and mason jars to a combination of earthy and glamorous. You’ll see elements like crystal chandeliers, eclectic place settings, and Instagram-worthy lounge areas staged with vintage furniture. FLOWERS: LOOSE & LUSH The floral industry is experiencing a return to the cascading bridal bouquet. Brides want flowers with a natural feeling: lush, loose, and looking like they were just plucked from a garden. Trailing ribbons in silk, taffeta, or velvet are another way for brides to personalize their bouquets. Brides can pin to their bouquet ribbons charms or photo lockets in remembrance of deceased loved ones. When it comes to flower colors, anything goes! You’ll see autumn tones at spring weddings, and pastel pretties in fall bouquets. The traditional white bridal bouquet is also never out of style, but it’s getting a bit of an update as florists mix shades of white and blush for texture and interest. Bridesmaid bouquets are taking a cue from the mix-andmatch dress trend: Flowers for your ladies can now be varied and reflect each girl’s personality.

2017 WEDDING TRENDS FOOD: UNIQUE EATS The traditional sit-down, three- or five-course meal is experiencing a sort of revolution. While you’ll still see these formal dinners at classic weddings, many more brides are also turning food into an interactive event. Family-style meals and food trucks are increasingly common. Couples also want their food to have meaning, so they’ll work with caterers to create custom meals. Want mac n’ cheese at your wedding? You can have it! Dinners that feature locallygrown and in-season ingredients are also very popular. These more casual farm-to-table dinners go hand-in-hand with family-style dining to foster a comfortable, homey environment. When it comes to desserts, “interactive” is still the name of the game. Dessert tables of pie, ice cream,

candy, or cupcakes reign supreme. Some couples choose to have both a classic wedding cake (it’s tradition!) along with a dessert bar just for fun. And just as food trucks are gaining popularity, so are dessert “trucks” like gelato carts and gourmet popsicle stands. These help-yourself stations aren’t just for edibles — they’re for drinkables, too. Coffee and hot chocolate bars with all the fixings are a cool trend for winter weddings. Then there’s the late-night snack — a treat that many guests have almost come to expect nowadays. Couples can go greasy and delicious (pizza) or offer a home-town specialty (ex: cheesesteaks in Philadelphia) at any style of wedding. Late-night snacks are not only yummy, they’re yet another opportunity for the bride and groom to get creative and show off their personality and style.

of your dreams FIND THE GOWN

Most girls are guilty of daydreaming about their wedding dress. We’re constantly bombarded with movies, TV, and photos of picture-perfect, iconic brides. Just think of the Kate Middleton effect! And what makes these brides iconic? The dress. Although finding the right dress for your wedding day isn’t as easy as daydreaming, we’re here to help with these bridal gown basics. 4

Prepare to spend a little more

Remember that just because it’s a great price doesn’t mean it’s a great dress for you. And don’t forget to bring along a pad of paper to track styles, dress names and numbers.

GOWNS GOWN STYLES Bridal attire ranges from extravagant princess gowns to tailored suits. That’s right — there’s no rule that says a bride must wear a fancy gown. This is the age when brides dress for their own comfort level and personal style, only more polished. Even so, most brides stick with a dress. The strapless style still reigns supreme, but the market has expanded in recent years to include gowns with all manner of straps, sleeves, and accessories. You’ll see many dresses that are modest in the front and dramatic in the back. Dresses are also belted, have convertible or removable cap sleeves, and come in an array of bold and muted colors in addition to just white. Some brides are even wearing more than one dress, such as a traditional gown for the ceremony and a short dress for the reception, so they can comfortably dance the night away. FABRIC & AFFORDABILITY Satin, tulle, and lace are the most commonly used fabrics for wedding gowns, and the type of fabric you choose will greatly affect the price. If you’re dreaming of intricate, handstitched, Italian lace with delicate beading, the cost is going to rise. But these days it’s entirely possible to find designers that create gorgeous gowns with price points that suit the mainstream bride. The professionals at your local bridal salon will be able to help you determine which fabric and details fit within your budget. STARTING THE SEARCH Start by gathering ideas: Bridal magazines, designer websites, and Pinterest are a great source as you

start the hunt for your wedding dress. Compile the styles you like that suit the mood of your wedding. For example, is your wedding venue a rustic lodge, classic ballroom, or ultra-modern loft? Ask yourself: What kind of dress makes sense for the activities of the day? Also think about what kind of dress makes sense for you. Weddings are no longer strictly adhering to tradition, and brides are embracing this new mainstream by crafting weddings that are truly a reflection of themselves — and that goes for bridal style, too. If you’re not into princess gowns, wear a white jumpsuit and sassy heels. If your wedding’s on a beach, don a kneelength sheath and comfy sandals. Keep your vision of your true self in mind as you search for ideas. Then make an appointment at your local bridal salon. Invite a trusted team of family and friends to join you. You don’t need an army — just a few close people you can count on to tell you the truth (sadly, not all gowns will be figure-flattering). Share your ideas for the type of gown you want with the professionals at the bridal salon, but keep an open mind. Ideally you should start visiting salons anywhere from nine months to a year before your wedding to allow enough time. If you’re in a rush (6 months or less), tell your consultant immediately. SHAPES & SIZES Remember that no two brides are shaped alike, therefore no dress will ever accent your silhouette exactly the same way it does another bride’s body. When the time comes to try on gowns, explore a myriad of styles and cuts to figure out what works for you — you might be surprised! Note that bridal PREMIER BRIDE • 49

GOWNS salons often carry only one sample size of each gown; try on these gowns even if they’re not your size — consultants are there to help you get in and out of sample sizes. If you’re nervous about the sizes available at your local bridal salon, give them a call. Talking to a representative will ease your mind, and you’ll find that whether you’re fullfigured or very petite, there have never been more options to accommodate brides of all shapes and sizes. TRYING ON DRESSES Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and try on dresses that aren’t necessarily in your comfort zone. You never know what a gown will really look like until you try it on, and lots of brides end up choosing a style of gown they never even dreamed of. Remember that the gowns at salons are just samples, so the size won’t be tailored to you, and most dresses can be ordered in various shades of white. So just because you’re not crazy about that big blush dress on the hanger, try it anyway! What do you have to lose? WORKING WITH A CONSULTANT While at the salon, make sure to take advantage of your professional consultant’s knowledge and expertise. A good bridal consultant should steer you in the right direction, so communicate your likes, dislikes, wants, and needs as much as possible. It’s the consultant’s job to handle every step of your salon experience, including showing you every option within your price range. They can also coordinate alterations and other practical matters once you’ve found “the one.” If you’re not in sync with the consultant you’ve been dealt, don’t 50 • PREMIER BRIDE

hesitate to ask to work with a different representative; every bridal salon’s goal is to give you an enjoyable experience. ALTERATIONS & FITTINGS Deciding on a gown is a major hurdle, but that’s not the end of the wedding dress “to do” list. There are usually as many as four fittings that follow saying “yes” to the dress. Here are some tips for making this process run as smoothly as possible: First, give yourself and the tailor sufficient time. If you’re in a rush, this is when working with a bridal salon can really help; it’s usually their job to make sure alterations run smoothly and on time. Second, choose a dress that’s very close to your actual size. Most gowns can’t be changed by more than two sizes, up or down. Buy a dress that fits the biggest part of you, not the smallest part; it’s easier to take a dress in to hug your figure than it is to let it out. If you’re not working with a salon and have to find your own tailor, choose a tailor that has a great reputation, not the lowest rate. When the time comes for your first fitting, make sure you’re sporting the same undergarments and shoes that you’ll be wearing on your wedding day. Even the slightest tweak in bra padding or heel height can change the way a dress hangs and where the hem falls. As you’re working with the tailor, trust that they know what they’re doing. You may ask them to make one alteration, and they might suggest an alternate way to achieve that look, or advise against it altogether. Know when to take a deep breath and leave certain decisions to the professionals — your stress levels will thank you for it.

Mix and Match.

No one said your attendants have to match in height or age. Feel free to pair bridesmaids and groomsmen as you think they would feel most comfortable - also feel free to throw in a loaner! PREMIER BRIDE • 69

GROOM THE LEVEL OF FORMALITY The first order of business is to evaluate how formal your wedding will be. This depends on the time of day of the wedding, the location, but most of all on you and your fiancé. Whatever level of formality you settle on, make sure you’re consistent throughout invitations, décor, food, location, and wedding attire should all match in terms of formality. (Most people do this instinctively!) In warm weather and for beachy destination weddings, lighter colors (tan, light grey, white) look effortlessly handsome. Though in all climates, darker colors (navy, charcoal, black) always look sharp. Ties, vests, and cummerbunds can match the wedding colors, or compliment them with neutral tones. If the bridal gown is ivory, the men should wear ivory shirts, not white, to compliment her. Semiformal and formal weddings have plenty of options: a high quality, single- or double-breasted men’s suit in black, charcoal, or navy with a Windsor knotted tie in white, ivory, navy, silver, or black is a less formal option. For a more formal look, consider a tuxedo with a single- or double-breasted dinner jacket, a white or ivory pointed-collar shirt, a vest or cummerbund, and either a bow tie or a four-in-hand tie (a “fancy” knotted necktie). A very formal wedding, called “white tie,” calls for the traditional black tuxedo with tails, a vest, a white wingedcollar shirt, and a bow tie. DISTINGUISHING THE GROOM One way to distinguish the groom is to give him a different, but complimentary, boutonniere to wear. Another option is to have the groom in, say, a white coat while his groomsmen 70 • PREMIER BRIDE

wear black. Use this same color play with vests and cummerbunds. SHOPPING TIPS When the men visit their formalwear shop they should have a firm idea of the women’s wedding attire and bring fabric or color swatches from the bridesmaids’ gowns. Pictures of preferred formalwear styles would also be helpful in the decision-making process. The groom and groomsmen should reserve their rentals at least three months in advance of the wedding (although the earlier, the better, especially during the busy season). Final measurements should be taken about three weeks before the ceremony; however, be sure to come back a few days before the wedding for last-minute alterations. Out-of-town groomsmen can get measured at any formalwear store or local tailor’s near them, and send their measurements to the groom or to your formalwear store. Someone (often the best man, as long as he’s responsible!) should be designated to return all formalwear to the store on time in order to avoid late fees, which can get quite expensive adding up the per day, per outfit costs. The perfect fit
If you purchase your suit/tux, it can be tailored to your specific measurements (recommended for grooms). Rental suits and tuxes generally have a more generic fit, though nowadays there are more options. You’re likely to find a range of fits (traditional, modern, and slim) to more closely resemble what’s in a groom/groomsman’s personal wardrobe. A formalwear store consultant will be a huge help in getting the fit just right.

romance THE SOUND OF

Weddings are rather visual affairs from the fancy dress to the picture-perfect venue, there’s a lot to see. But nothing sets the mood quite like music. From stirring melodies at the ceremony, to easy background tunes at cocktail hour, to up-tempo beats that get the dance party started, your choices in music are the soundtrack to your special day.4

MUSIC CEREMONY MUSIC When weighing your options for ceremony musicians, consider your vision (instrumental or vocalist) and your wedding’s style and venue. Think back to past weddings you’ve attended. What did you like about the music for each ceremony? What didn’t work so well? Once you and your fiancé have some ideas in mind, check out local musicians. Visit bridal shows, search online, or ask for referrals from recently married friends or from your ceremony officiant. You could also work with an experienced talent or booking agency that offers convenient, one-stop-shopping for all your wedding music needs. Narrow down your options, then arrange to hear a live performance. After you’ve secured musicians for your ceremony, they can help you decide on what songs to include. Most musicians who specialize in weddings will be a great resource for song suggestions. Your officiant might also be helpful in guiding your musical selection. COCKTAILS AND DINNER MUSIC Conversation is key during cocktails and dinner so the tunes should set the mood, but not intrude. If you decide on live music, try chamber music, classical or acoustic guitar, or a jazz ensemble for subtle entertainment that won’t overpower the mixing and mingling. A seasoned pianist can also be a fun choice, if he or she can play a wide range of musical styles and take requests! RECEPTION AND DANCING MUSIC Let’s face it, this is a critical decision that can make or break an entire wedding. First, ask yourself, band or DJ? While there will be pros and cons 74 • PREMIER BRIDE

to each, it always comes down to personal taste and budget. Live music gives the evening a sort of festive energy and is a wonderful option if your budget allows. The key is finding a band that caters to weddings. These musicians offer versatility and will appeal to guests of all ages. In terms of expense, a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ. Keep this rule in mind, if you can’t afford a good wedding band, then hire a DJ. A DJ will be more cost-effective and offer an almost infinite variety of music – truly something for everyone. Decide on the details ahead of time; make a “do not play” list of any songs you simply can’t stand and a “must play” list of songs you don’t want to miss. THE NITTY GRITTY For the reception - Consider your reception site and how this might impact your choice in entertainment. Communicate with your site manager so you’re aware of any restrictions and so that he/she is aware of your plans ahead of time. Communicate with your band or DJ so that they can familiarize themselves with the space, its limitations, and other important technical details. In general - As with other wedding vendors, make sure the ins and outs of your agreement with your musicians is very clear and in writing. This includes payment, start and end times, fees for playing overtime, etc. Once you’ve done your homework, hired musicians for each stage of your wedding day, and worked out the details, you can rest easy. That is, until it’s time to start practicing your dance moves.

On your wedding day… the entertainment should be all about you!

BEAUTY From makeup to hair to nails, every blushing bride (and mother-of-the bride) wants to look her absolute best on her wedding day. We’ve got tips for the day itself and beautification plans to implement months before the big day. Follow our advice, and you’ll be well on your way to showing off your most beautiful self. Get glowing. Now is a great time to focus on healthy, glowing skin. If you’re concerned about the health and appearance of your skin, consider a visit to a dermatologist (for bigger problems) or an aesthetician (for minor issues). Depending on the severity of your skin problems, start 6 to 12 months before your wedding day so you have time to treat, heal, and achieve good results. Facials are a must for all skin types. Regular treatments result in refined pores, smoother facial lines, healed blemishes, and a more radiant complexion. For full-body beautification, waxing is a good place to start. Your legs will be smooth and free of razor stubble. To take beautification to the next level, consider Botox, injection therapy, and face or body tightening. These treatments are designed to help you look and feel your best without the pain and recovery time of surgical procedures. Hair Do’s. When choosing a hairstyle, consider: your gown, the formality of your wedding, your personal style, your hair type and texture, and your face shape. An up-do is a classic way to go and is ideal for showing off a dramatic neckline. If you’re a trendy girl, try braids, hair extensions, or a carefree bohemian look. Just be cautious of overly-trendy styles. Consult your hair stylist four to six weeks before the wedding to find the right look for you.

In the end, the most important thing is finding a hairstyle that looks like you. Makeup musts. Whether you hire a pro to do your makeup or you do it yourself, do a trial run before the wedding. Get feedback from close friends and family, take photos, and evaluate. Do you like what you see? What would you change? How well does the makeup last? Have fun with your makeup. Try fake eyelashes, defined brows, or a bold lip, but make sure you look like you. Use a primer under your foundation, lipstick, and eye shadow so that it lasts longer. Wear waterproof mascara to fend off any streaks from tears of joy. Makeup Must Nots. Don’t go too light with your makeup as you’ll look washed out in photos. Don’t go too dark as it will be distracting. Don’t overdo the blush. You’ll be emotional, happy, and busy which is a recipe for your own natural color. Nails and Brows. Regular manicures in the one or two months before your wedding day will get your nails in perfect shape. Avoid really trendy nail polish colors; play it safe and go with a classic, neutral color. Have your eyebrows professionally shaped at least two weeks before the wedding to avoid skin irritation. OUR BEST BEAUTY ADVICE Strongly consider using beauty professionals for your wedding day hair, makeup, and nails. A true makeup artist will know trade secrets not only for fashioning a longer-lasting look, but also for accentuating your features. A great hair stylist can help you create a look that complements your features and lasts all night. When you go pro, the end result is a relaxed, picture-perfect bride. Lastly, never forget a bride’s best accessory: her smile!

OUR NEIGHBORHOODS: Arthur Avenue, Bronx

New York City is filled with wonderful neighborhoods that are still reminiscent of an era gone by. Our recent visit to the Arthur Avenue section of the Bronx was an exhilarating journey to Italy. This section of the Bronx is known as “Little Italy in the Bronx”, and as you stroll along the street you can’t help but want to walk into every little storefront. We also visited the historic Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church recently celebrated their 100 year anniversary. We are told that people travel from all over to be married in this historic church. The story of the parish travels back to 1906, just a few years after the turn of the century when this area was still a rural hamlet. This was when Italian immigrants were settling by the hundreds and thousands to raise their families. These families brought with them a strong cultural heritage from their beloved motherland and a strong Catholic faith. For almost a century this church has seen the Pontificates of eight popes, the leadership of six Cardinal Archbishops of 80 • PREMIER BRIDE

New York and the service of eight Pastors working with hosts of dedicated selfsacrificing priests. Mount Carmel Church stands proudly and invulnerable like a mighty fortress, and continues to be the source, the sign and the pivot of vitality, unity, strength and stability of this community. This small beginning as a basement church has grown through the years originally nurtured by the zeal and love of its founders, Fr. Burke and saintly Fr. Cafuzzi. Today the parish continues to serve the Italian community of the Bronx and welcomes the new immigrants from Latin America and serves them with the same devotion and love that this church was built on. Couples that desire to be married in this church need to personally visit the church to make the necessary arrangements with one of the priests at least six months prior to to the wedding. CHOOSING WHERE TO WED your ceremony location For centuries churches and synagogues have been the traditional choice for the sacred act of exchanging vows. Lending an air of reverence and dignity to even the most casual of ceremonies, these holy places have created the perfect setting for the formal commitment of marriage. There are many unique options for couples who, for whatever reason, would prefer an alternate location. Consider holding the event at a nondenominational church or chapel. These locations usually have fewer rules and guidelines than other formal houses of worship, but yet still provide a spiritual setting. Have the ceremony at the reception venue. Couples often choose this option as a convenience for their guests, thereby

minimizing the distance one must travel from ceremony to reception. Facilities that provide this option normally have separate areas for each event, or a plan for quickly converting the room. Sometimes places with the most personal significance make the best ceremony locations. For example, a park you walked through on your first date, the backyard where one of you grew up or a relative’s home where you enjoy spending time are all good choices. If you love the outdoors, consider holding your ceremony at a city park, the beach, a zoo, or even at the foot of a national landmark. If you’re a little on the daring side, you might consider exchanging vows while sky diving from a plane, scuba diving, or in a hot air balloon.

BACHELOR (ETTE) PARTIES take on a new look If you think you know all about these traditional events, think again! Bachelor and bachelorette parties are about friends getting together, sharing old stories and, perhaps, creating some new memories. A weekend immersed in an outdoor adventure with plenty of time before and after for fine dining and visits to the local pubs is a great way to do just that! Adventures include white water rafting, cattle drives, deep sea fishing, ATV desert rides, sky diving … well you get the idea. The adventure also can be adjusted to fit the skill level of the group. The adventure bachelor parties give the best man, who didn’t take “Party Planning 101,” a chance to sign the group up and then relax. From the time the groomsmen arrive at the destination city until they depart, everything is planned out, orchestrated and included in the modest pricing. Choosing a destination close to home, within driving distance, or at a mid point that is convenient to all members, is a plus; too often out of town guys must make two costly trips to the wedding city. The same concepts and advantages apply for the gals. The questions you or your fiancé need to be thinking about are: 1. How many people are involved and where are they coming from? 2. What type of adventure is appropriate? 3. What is our price range, considering all the members of the group? 4. How much time is there to schedule the event? 5. How do I learn more?

The stress of wedding planning is over, your in-laws are gone, and it’s finally time for that once-in-a-lifetime getaway: your honeymoon. Whether you’re jetting off to a luxurious Caribbean resort, gallivanting across Europe, or camping in a tent near home, what matters is that you’re starting your life together. And what better way to start than with an intimate escape?4

Honeymoon tip

Consider taking an easy two-three-day trip right after your wedding, but plan for a more extensive honeymoon a week or more later. PREMIER BRIDE • 87

HONEYMOON The stress of wedding planning is over and it’s finally time for that once-ina-lifetime getaway. From the planning stages to the trip itself, we’ve compiled our best honeymoon ideas and advice. Decide on your ideal destination and figure out what you’d like to do when you’re there. Are you up for sight-seeing or would you rather just soak up the sun? Make sure to discuss your expectations before you book your trip. Let’s look at some destinations to consider. Go tropical. You can’t beat a fruity umbrella-clad drink and romantic walks along the beach. Even for the most active of couples, your honeymoon is one time when it’s okay to sit back and let yourselves be taken care of. If you choose a tropical destination, an all-inclusive resort is a most relaxing way to go, and most places offer a honeymoon package. All abroad! A trip abroad is an adventure and a chance to get caught up in a whirlwind of new ideas and cultures. However, if you’ve never been abroad before, make sure this is an experience you’re both fully committed to. Planning an international trip for the first time can be stressful. But if you’re up to the challenge, the result can be a most romantic, unforgettable experience. Staying local. If you don’t have the funds for a plane ticket abroad or can’t get away for a long trip, consider what’s close to home. You’ll probably be surprised to learn that there’s a quaint bed & breakfast just a few miles from your home. Turn off your cell phones and focus on each other. It will seem as if you’re light years away. Take a cruise. If you can’t decide on a destination, a cruise might be for you, it’s the best of both worlds! If you want to see Europe, but you’ve never been and don’t have time to plan a trip, try a 88 • PREMIER BRIDE

Mediterranean cruise. If you know you want to go tropical but can’t decide on a spot, island hop on a Caribbean cruise. And if you can’t decide whether you want to relax or be active, a cruise will give the chance to do both. Plan and prep. Here are some things to think about, especially if you’ve never traveled to your honeymoon spot before. • Different customs. If you’re traveling abroad, do your research. Find out what’s considered inappropriate in terms of gestures, actions, or type of dress, and learn the best way to tip (what percentage and when). • Language. Learn some key phrases before you go and bring a pocketsized dictionary. • Weather. Find out the average high and low temps and be prepared for rain or shine. • Travel agents. Leave your travel planning to a professional! The cost to you is generally zero, and an agent will save you tons of time and greatly reduce your stress. Make it romantic. It’s no secret that a honeymoon is all about those intimate moments and fueling the newlywed romance. So be proactive in making sparks fly! Pack a secret gift for each other or plan a nighttime excursion — anything to spice things up. DESTINATION WEDDINGS A destination wedding might be an elopement for just the bride and groom or a small affair that includes immediate family and friends. Either way, destination weddings are a fun escape and an unforgettable experience - a wedding and honeymoon all rolled into one!

After all the time and effort spent on your dream wedding, it’s finally time to relax and enjoy each other. Where better than a Portuguese island paradise? Jet off to Madeira, an archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa. Known for its warm, subtropical climate and namesake wine, there’s a wealth of experiences awaiting honeymooners on this gorgeous island in the Atlantic. From green and rugged landscapes to beaches to the cosmopolitan capital, this is an island that’s easy to fall for. 4 90 • PREMIER BRIDE

A BIT ABOUT MADEIRA The island of Madeira is first and foremost a haven of natural beauty. Nature reserves span two thirds of the island, brimming with exotic flowers and lush, green land that slopes down to a bright blue sea. Madeira’s dry season runs from April to September, though temperatures are mild all year long. There really isn’t a bad time to visit the island. While you might experience short, heavy downpours in the rainiest months (December and January), there is rarely any prolonged rain. Plus, December is when you’ll catch one of Madeira’s most acclaimed spectacles: the New Year’s Eve fireworks! FOR THE COSMOPOLITAN COUPLE Fuchal is the capital city of Madeira and is known for its acclaimed restaurants, stunning four- and fivestar hotels, and of course its warm climate, as it’s located on the sunniest side of the island. The city is nestled in the sprawling green landscape, near banana plantations and botanical gardens, and enjoys views of both majestic mountains and the Atlantic.

During your stay in Fuchal, you can of course partake in any number of outdoor activities from water sports to nature hikes - or stay in town for a round of golf at one of Madeira’s famous courses, people watching at a charming café or city garden, or shopping at a traditional street market. Bask in daytime walks through the city’s historic areas and picture-perfect squares, then dine al fresco at one of Fuchal’s fabulous eateries. As for nightlife, there’s no shortage of fun to be had as the city starts buzzing after midnight. You’ll find bars and clubs that are open from 12am to 4am, and still more open from 4am to 7am. Here’s a tip for living it up like a local: Go out to dinner at a normal time, then head home to relax for a few hours before making your way to the nightlife scene. FESTIVALS IN FUCHAL Nightclubs not your thing? Fuchal still offers plenty of nighttime fun, especially with its many festivals. The city’s New Year’s Eve firework display actually holds the Guinness world record as the largest firework display in the world!

Carnival Festival PREMIER BRIDE • 91

Flower Festival

During Carnival and the Flower Festival, colorful parades dance through the streets, bursting with vibrant costumes and samba beats. Throughout the Christmas season, Fuchal’s city center lights up like a (wonderfully warm) winter wonderland. Last but not least, the yearly Wine Festival celebrates the time-honored traditions of the Madeira people and the making of the island’s namesake wine. During the festival, you’ll find light, sound, and folk shows that revel in the tradition of wine making. The fest starts with a ceremonial picking of the grapes, the picker’s parade, and finally the treading of the grapes. For wineloving honeymooners, there’s no better time to travel to Madeira! FOR NATURE LOVERS ON LAND From forest hikes to dolphin spotting, exciting outdoor excursions await nature lovers on both land and sea. On land, start with one of the many protected reserves. Walk through the laurisilva (laurel) forest - a type of subtropical forest found in regions with high humidity and stable, mild temperatures. The laurel forest in Madeira treats hikers to awe-inspiring mountain views and is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site, as it is the world’s largest laurel forest. Exploring the trails along the levadas is another way to go. The levadas are irrigation channels that bring fresh water from the mountains through lush vegetation to the coast. Hikers can follow the twists and turns of the levadas for miles. Closer to Fuchal, flower enthusiasts can revel in Madeira’s many blooms at the Botanical Garden. The gardens sit on a hillside overlooking Fuchal, and there you’ll find an example of nearly every

tree and plant on the island - that’s more than 2,000 species! Throughout the garden, plants are labelled with their name, scientific name, and origin, as the place also serves as a science and culture center. The gardens are divided into smaller groupings: trees, succulents, tropical, and Lorio Park, which showcases some of the world’s most exotic birds. FOR NATURE LOVERS AT SEA The Atlantic Ocean beckons for sailing, fishing, water skiing, surfing, diving, and swimming. For diving adventures, try exploring the waters just off the Garajau coastline, where you’ll find one of Europe’s first underwater nature reserves. Or, if you’re looking for something a little different, you can dive at the Madeira Aquarium! You’ll dive with sharks, rays, and hundreds of species of fish. If you’ve never done a dive before, you can even learn how to handle the diving equipment right at the aquarium with one of their experts on staff. This is a great way to get your flippers wet!

On the coast, you’ll spy pebbled beaches, cliffs, and volcanic saltwater pools. In the village of Porto Moniz, in the northwest part of the island, these natural pools are lined with volcanic rocks that enclose refreshing sea water, replenished daily at high tide. If whale and dolphin watching is on your bucket list, then Madeira is the island for you. It’s one of the best spots in the world to spy marine life, as 29 species of marine mammals can be seen year-round in Madeira. Book an excursion with confidence; there’s a 90% chance that you’ll see dolphins frolicking around your boat, and you might even bump into a family of whales! You’ll want your camera during this excursion for sure. WHY HONEYMOON? Madeira is one of those magical destinations that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a hiker, diver, leisure lover, nightclubber, or a little bit of each, you’ll find your bliss on this pristine island paradise.

Caerphilly Castle

WALES With 641 castles, 3 national parks, and 750 miles of coastline, Wales is a honeymoon destination unlike any other. Whether you’re a lover of the landscape, charmed by royal history, keen on Celtic culture, or a fan of famous poets, Wales is just waiting to greet romantics like you with a friendly “croeso” — that’s Welsh for “welcome!” 4 QUAINT & COZY While the capital city of Cardiff (a two-hour train ride from London) is bustling with four universities and a vibrant cosmopolitan culture, you’ll find the charm of the Welsh countryside around every corner. In the heart of the city stands Cardiff Castle and Edwardian shopping arcades (Britain’s first malls) housing lovely boutique shops. Throughout the countryside, explore quaint towns and rustic fishing villages. Spend the night in a cozy inn or romantic country manor house, like Llangoed Hall, which dates back 94 • PREMIER BRIDE

to 1632. For a more adventurous stay, search for Welsh accommodations via Under the Thatch - a travel site that lets you book a night’s rest in a renovated mill, farmhouse, cottage, or even a gypsy caravan! CASTLES Historic & Haunted Caerphilly Castle is a must-see stop on any tour of Wales. It’s the second-largest castle in Britain and oversees the town of Caerphilly, just eight miles from Cardiff. The Green Lady is said to haunt the castle - supposedly the ghost of Princess Alice

who, it is said, dropped dead when she learned her princely lover had been slain. Now she roams Caerphilly Castle, waiting to be reunited with him. Another favorite of ghost hunters is Bodelwyddan Castle in North Wales. The castle dates back to the 17th century and is chockfull of spooky sightings. But art history buffs will also appreciate a stop at Bodelwyddan; the castle is home to collections of art form the National Portrait Gallery, sculptures from the Royal Academy, and furniture from the Victoria and Albert Museum. Caernarfon Castle is a favorite of explorer types and the young-at-heart. Here you can climb towers and turrets, walk ancient walls, dive into dungeons, and get lost in another time - a time of myth and magic. The Celtic history and lore of Wales is built into the walls of these castles, and the enchanted feeling is undeniable. Caernarfon, Conway, Harlech, and Beaumaris castles have even been named UNESCO World Heritage sites. Some of these castles also boast gorgeous gardens and grounds, perfect for a romantic stroll. At Powis Castle, you’ll find a traditional English garden with sculpted hedges and impressive topiary. In Conway, don’t miss the Bodnant Garden. Though it isn’t part of a castle complex, Bodnant is one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK, blending both terraced and wild gardens. Sleep Like Kings & Queens Ruthin Castle Hotel offers travelers the royal treatment. The castle was once owned by King Henry VIII and later by Queen Elizabeth I. Nowadays, the castle is open to visitors and is a must for at least one night during any Welsh honeymoon. During your stay, don’t miss one of Ruthin Castle’s

medieval banquets - it’s an experience you’ll never forget! WHEN TO GO Many of Wales’ historic landmarks and castles are open year-round, but some close during the winter months (from November through the end of February), or are only open on weekends during this time. Make sure to check the websites of each landmark on your bucket list to make sure they’re open for business. THE GREAT OUTDOORS Walking Wales is certainly a destination for walkers, with its three national parks and hundreds of miles of hiking trails, suited to all skill levels. Trails are easily accessible and close to various lodging options. You’ll enjoy stunning scenic views, then pass through darling villages filled with friendly locals. Along your walking route, plan ahead to book accommodations at historic coaching inns, homey bed-and-breakfasts, or comfy hotels. Many of these places are specifically geared toward walkers, so you’ll feel right at home. National Parks In one of its three National Parks, you’ll find Wales’ highest mountain: Snowdon. Snowdon is located in Snowdonia National Park, and it’s where climbers have been known to hone their skills before scaling Mount Everest. Adventurous climbers can go this route, while more laid-back honeymooners can take the historic steam railway to Snowdon’s summit. The views are worth the trip! Pembrokeshire Coast National Park runs along (what else?) the coast and is brimming with sandy coves, PREMIER BRIDE • 95

fishing villages, cliff-top walks, and an abundance of seabirds. Coasteering the sport of exploring a rocky coastline by climbing, jumping, and swimming - was invented here, and can certainly be a fun adventure for more daring honeymooners. Suited up in a warm winter wetsuit, helmet, and buoyancy aid, you’ll scale craggy cliffs, climb rocks, and swim into sea caves. Last but not least, there’s Brecon Beacons National Park, which is perfect to tour on horseback, bicycle, or foot. Wales has 1,000 miles of bike paths on the National Cycle Network, with breathtaking views all along the way. Writers & Poets Long before Harry Potter, there was Mabinogion, a series of magical tales from medieval Wales that spoke of princes, poets, and warriors on their quests for power, glory, and magic. Welsh literature is one of the oldest written languages in the world and storytellers are still revered there. To this day, Wales honors poets at The National Eisteddfod - a festival of literature, music, and performance art. The fest is held annually during the

first week of August, attracting over 150,000 visitors. The festival ends with the crowning of the bard and awarding the highest national prize for poetry. As far as famous Welsh poets go, Dylan Thomas is perhaps the most universally loved. Thomas said that the musical language and transcendent vision of his poems were inexorably intertwined with the Welsh landscape. How’s that for poetry? He was born in Swansea, so fans of Thomas’ poetry would do well to start their journey there. You can enjoy a stay at the house where Thomas grew up, as well as visit the Dylan Thomas Centre and Dylan Thomas Festival, held in October and November. WHY HONEYMOON? A romantic get-away in Wales is perfect for newlyweds in search of something off the beaten path. Whether you’re reveling in mystic lore, Celtic history, and glorious castles, or winding your way through verdant, mountainous landscapes to cozy countryside abodes, the magic of Wales beckons explorers to its shores.

TRANSPORTATION There are quite a few options for limos. A formal limousine seats four people, and sometimes a bride and groom will travel to the ceremony alone. Or, if you’d like to include the wedding party, stretch limos can allow for six to 10. For larger parties and a flashier mode of transport, sport utility models like the Hummer and Explorer are popular and unique both inside and out. The larger models are often posh, with flashy lights and decorative interiors. CATCH THE COACH For larger wedding parties or for those that want a little extra elbow room, a party bus or a luxury coach is a great way to travel from the ceremony to the reception. It’s got all the amenities and style of a luxury limousine, but with more room to spare –these will seat up to 10 people very comfortably. Or, for even bigger parties, a passenger coach or a party bus can seat anywhere from 21 to 49 people so it can be a great way to get a few special guests and family members on the special ride between locations. Or, if you have a very small wedding and the ceremony and reception are separated by a long distance, this is a fun way to get all the guests in on the party right away. Like limousine services, passenger and luxury coach companies require a minimum number of hours. The size and type of coach will determine the hourly rate. Depending on the size of your party, it may make sense to hire two coaches - maybe a luxury coach for the bride, groom and attendants and a passenger coach for the guests. This provides guests with a little more flexibility, as well. 104 • PREMIER BRIDE

TAKING THE TROLLEY An attractive, fun and picturesque alternative to a limo or a passenger coach is a trolley, if it’s available in your area. Trolleys generally can accommodate between 20 and 35 people so they’re great for larger parties or for adding on some family members or friends. With their antique look and old world charm, they’ll lend a lovely, elegant touch to this wedding day detail. Since most have outdoor decks, these are especially fun in small towns so you can take a peek outside and watch onlookers wave at the newlyweds. And there’s no transportation alternative that looks as great in photos! UNIQUE ALTERNATIVES Limos, party buses and trolleys are great, traditional options, but some new couples might opt for something more personal or creative. A horsedrawn carriage is a romantic, vintage option especially if you can decorate it with your wedding colors or pull up to your waving guests. Vintage cars are also great photo ops and add a touch of class. An antique Rolls Royce or a ’69 Mustang are fun and something you don’t get to ride in every day. Ride in style like the royal couple did in their April wedding in a decorated navy soft-top Aston Martin Volante. Or, as with everything else in the wedding, make sure the transportation connects to YOU. Maybe you met at a Harley rally – ride off on your twin Hogs! Or maybe you share a love of mountain biking – don’t be afraid to wheel over on a tandem together. Personality is what makes weddings memorable so however you move, make sure it’s full of your style.

True Quality Isn’t Expensive, ... It’s Priceless!

Gloria, Anita & Alex McGill-Gerami

SHOPPING MADE EASY attending bridal shows You may find that the more time you can save in planning your wedding, the better. A Bridal Show can help. Here’s information and tips to help! Plan in Advance: Know your budget. Make a list of what you need most and what your budget will allow for each item and service. Types of Bridal Shows: Small intimate shows average attendance is between 75-200 people and generally around 20-40 different vendors. These shows allow you much more time to talk with the individual wedding professionals, ask questions and get more in-depth answers. The second kind of show is much larger, averaging anywhere from 800 to 2000 attending and featuring anywhere from 100-250 different vendors. The biggest advantage to this kind of show is the wide range of vendors available and the beautiful displays for great wedding ideas. Pre-printed address labels: Most vendors will have some special drawing for gifts and prizes. Having these labels available will save you time and effort. Include your full name, address, phone number, wedding date and email address. Create a temporary wedding e-mail address: It’s free and can be deleted after your wedding date. Obviously you will receive solicitation after the show. This is a good thing. Quality vendors reaching out to provide specific wedding information and tips, along with any special offers they might have. Who should come along: Yes, your fiancé should come along, especially if it’s just the two of you. Decisions can be made on the spot and you both will have a good time! Or, bring a couple of friends, your mother or a whole entourage. Date or Calendar Book: It might be appropriate to schedule an appointment

at another time for a more in-depth conversation. Usually any show “specials” will also apply if a date and time is made for a follow-up discussion. There are times when you might want to book something right at the show, such as limited availability and your date is still open. Or you might have already met with a vendor prior and are ready to make the commitment.

Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. The odds are you’ll be on your feet for quite a while. You don’t want to leave until you’re ready, not because your feet are too tired. Pressing onward when you’re feet hurt just isn’t any fun. Children: Avoid bringing small children to the show if possible. While you might not have a choice or it may be tempting to bring your flower girl along to see the neat wedding stuff, they are sure to tire more quickly then you. Prepare for information overload: When you find a vendor you are interested in, make a note about why. What struck you as appealing about this person? When you get home and you’re looking through 10 different photographers, your note may be the only thing you have to remember which ones you liked and why. Also, write down any good tips they might have given you.

GIFTS OF HOPE traditional bridal shower and engagement The bridal shower is a celebrated tradition inviting you to enjoy a gesture from your friends while also putting you in the spotlight. The number of guests is up to the hostess, however select from those who know you well enough to also be at your wedding. Invite guests to no more than two parties where gifts are given or specifically tell them that one gift will be plenty. Shower themes range from traditional housewares and kitchen parties to more personal showers that shout sex, fun and friendship. Expect the creative types to concoct poems or dishes to spice up the day. Most importantly, remember to keep a good sense of humor and to enjoy the attention and thought that went into planning and coordinating your bridal

shower. Any theme involving clothing needs your size and color preference. It may be helpful to visit a lingerie store beforehand to try on several items to determine the most comfortable and flattering styles and sizes. At the engagement party, the tradition-minded father announces the engagement with a toast followed by the groom’s short speech of thanks. This celebration is normally attended by close family, friends, and the bridal party. Gifts should not be expected. The soon-to-bemarried are also feted at parties by bridal attendants and groomsmen. Have hostesses contact those on your guest list a few weeks in advance. Tradition suggests you express gratitude in writing to all who give you gifts and to those organizing the parties.
