WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Wedding Planner? Day of Coordinator? Venue Coordinator? Wedding Planner. This person guides the couple through the planning process from setting the budget to keeping Aunt Sally away from Uncle Buck. The wedding planner will also answer the couple’s questions, assist with contract and vendor negotiations, and create a detailed timeline of the wedding day events. Be sure to ask your wedding planner if they provide event design services. Event designers help make your event cohesive and stylish. They have an artistic eye that can truly transform a space. Day of Coordinator. A Day of Coordinator (usually a month of service) is all about logistics but on a shorter timeline than a planner. They will confirm vendor contracts

and create a day of timeline, as well as make sure payments and guest counts are in order. They will coordinate everything involved on the day of the event from set up to breakdown, make sure everything is in order, nothing is forgotten, and you are free to enjoy your day! Venue Coordinator. This person is usually the individual you met with the day you signed your venue contract. They will handle the set up of all tables and chairs, manage the food and beverage provided by the venue, coordinate placement of wedding items with wedding planner, handle venue-parking logistics and manage venue staff. Be sure to ask your venue coordinator all of the tasks they will handle on your day.

FINDING THE PERFECT RINGS 6 helpful tips Start early, and do your research. Buy your rings 2-4 months before your wedding so that you have time for engraving, if desired, and some cushion in case there are any delays. This means you should start looking 4-6 months before the big day, or earlier! Find a good, reputable jeweler, educate yourself on metals and diamonds, and start evaluating your likes and dislikes. Think long-term. If you intend to keep your rings forever, then consider settling on a more classic style versus something trendy. On the other hand, you could plan to “update” your rings on your five, 10 or 20 year anniversary, in which case, go for what you love right now - trendy or not! Be clear about your budget. You may have heard the guideline, “spend about two months’ salary” on the engagement ring. While this gives you a ballpark amount to consider, the bottom line is this: find an amount you are comfortable with and stick with it. To match or not to match. If it’s important to you that you both have matching wedding bands, then by all means, do it! Just know that it’s not a requirement, and regardless of the jewelry, you’ll always know who belongs to whom. Consider your lifestyle. Active, dressy, casual or formal…consider how you live, and the activities you engage in as you think about what you want to wear on your ring finger for the rest of your life. Smart sizing. To be most accurate, don’t have your finger sized first thing in the morning, just after exercising, or when your body temperature is quite hot or cold.

SELECTING A GOWN Your wedding day attire will be the most memorable outfit you’ll ever own. Consider all your options – a designer gown from a full service bridal salon, a family heirloom needing some redesign, or a custom designed gown to reflect your personality?

• Which designers do you carry? • Do you have the dress that I want on hand? • Do you offer accessories and shoes as well? Can you dye the shoes? • Do you offer pressing, alterations or bridal slips? • Can you guarantee a delivery date for my dress? • When can you offer fittings for my bridal party? ALTERATIONS & FITTINGS There are usually as many as four fittings that follow saying “yes” to the dress. Here are some tips for making this process run as smoothly as possible. Give yourself and the tailor sufficient time. Know that most gowns can’t be changed by more than two sizes, up or down, so buy a dress that fits the biggest part of you rather than the smallest part. It’s easier to take a dress in to hug your figure than it is to let it out. Choose a tailor that has a great reputation, not the lowest rate. At each fitting, make sure to wear the same undergarments and shoes that you’ll be wearing on your wedding day. Even the slightest tweak in bra padding or heel height can change the way a dress hangs and where the hem falls.

The strapless gown still reigns supreme, but the market has expanded in recent years to include dresses with all manner of straps, sleeves, and accessories. Satin, tulle, and lace are the most commonly used fabrics for wedding gowns, and the type of fabric you choose will greatly affect the price. Start your search by gathering ideas. Bridal magazines, designer websites, and Pinterest are a great source. Compile the styles you like that suit the mood of your wedding. Then make an appointment at your local bridal salon and invite a trusted team of family and friends to join you. At the salon, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. You never know what a gown will really look like until you try it on, and lots of brides end up choosing a style of gown they never even dreamed of.

Invitations set the stage and build excitement offering guests a peek at your wedding’s style. With creativity and proper etiquette, your invites will give a great first impression.4

Have an A-List and B-List of people you want to invite. Send out the A-list eight to ten weeks in advance and use the B-list as alternates for those from the A-list that decline.

It’s best to find a qualified local professional to act as your go-to person for all paper goods and etiquette questions. If you choose to purchase online, give yourself some extra time in case there are any problems that require shipping back and forth. Before you choose a style of invitation, it’s crucial to know some of the broad themes of your wedding: casual vs. formal, bold colors vs. soft hues, etc. Knowing these key details will help you find or create invitations to reflect the style of your day. If possible, order invitations and other wedding stationery six or more months before the big day. Formal invitations should be sent six to eight weeks before the wedding, with save-the-dates going out months in advance. CREATIVE THINKING While formal invitations complete with calligraphy and foil-lined envelopes are never out of style, the breadth of invite design options has grown immensely. Many brides hire a graphic designer or artist to add a personalized, handmade touch. The use of watercolor and illustrated elements is also growing to such an extent that many stationery companies now have a resident artist on staff. PAPER PARTS & PIECES Wedding invitations typically consist of several parts: a ceremony card, a reception card, a response card with its stamped/addressed envelope, a card with directions to the ceremony/ reception and hotel information for out-of-town guests, and an inner and outer envelope. THE LEVEL OF FORMALITY The first order of business is to evaluate how formal your wedding will be. This depends on the time of day of the wedding, the location, but most of all on you and your fiancé. Whatever level of formality you settle on, make sure you’re consistent throughout - invitations, décor, food, location, and wedding attire should all match in terms of formality. (Most people do this instinctively!) In warm weather and for beachy destination weddings, lighter colors (tan, light grey, white) look effortlessly handsome. Though in all climates, darker colors (navy, charcoal, black) always look sharp. Ties, vests, and cummerbunds can match the wedding colors, or compliment them with neutral tones. If the bridal gown is ivory, the men should wear ivory shirts, not white, to compliment her. Semiformal and formal weddings have plenty of options: a high quality, single- or double-breasted men’s suit in black, charcoal, or navy with a Windsor knotted tie in white, ivory, navy, silver, or black is a less formal option. For a more formal look, consider a tuxedo with a single- or double-breasted dinner jacket, a white or ivory pointed-collar shirt, a vest or cummerbund, and either a bow tie or a four-in-hand tie (a “fancy” knotted


GROOM necktie). A very formal wedding, called “white tie,” calls for the traditional black tuxedo with tails, a vest, a white wingedcollar shirt, and a bow tie. DISTINGUISHING THE GROOM One way to distinguish the groom is to give him a different, but complimentary, boutonniere to wear. Another option is to have the groom in, say, a white coat while his groomsmen wear black. Use this same color play with vests and cummerbunds. SHOPPING TIPS When the men visit their formalwear shop they should have a firm idea of the women’s wedding attire and bring fabric or color swatches from the bridesmaids’ gowns. Pictures of preferred formalwear styles would also be helpful. Buying the suit/tux is the best way to get the perfect fit, but rentals are now more widely available in various fits: classic, modern, and slim. A formalwear consultant will be most helpful in getting the fit just right. The groom and groomsmen should reserve their rentals at least three months in advance of the wedding. Final measurements should be taken about three weeks before the ceremony; however, be sure to come back a few days before the wedding for last-minute alterations. Out-of-town groomsmen can get measured at any formalwear store or local tailor’s near them, and send their measurements to the groom or to your formalwear store. Someone should be designated to return all formalwear to the store on time in order to avoid late fees, which can get quite expensive adding up the per day, per outfit costs.

Some opt for limos and other luxury vehicles, others take a turn on the trolley, and some go by golf cart. There are lots of fun, fashionable ways to get from here to there on your wedding day. Here are some ideas.4

TRANSPORTATION FIRST: HOW MANY? Your search for transportation starts once you decide how many people you’ll be moving. Do you want just the bride and the groom in a vehicle, or is the entire wedding party heading to the reception together? If the whole party is going, do you want to include their spouses or dates? What about each couple’s parents? Once you make those decisions, you can start searching around for transport based on size. Then, you can pick out a limousine, a coach party bus, a trolley, or something more unique and personal for the couple. Whatever you decide on, keep safety in mind while revelers are bouncing from place to place. LIMOS If there is a day to splurge on this iconic luxury vehicle, your wedding is certainly the day. Unlike some other forms of transport, a limo can be booked for an entire day, so you could get a high-class ride to pick you up at the house, deliver you to the ceremony, reception or even to the airport to jet away on a honeymoon. Most companies have a one or two hour minimum for their services so think about what the most cost-effective way would be to keep the limo around. If you want a car for both going to and leaving from the ceremony, it might be more affordable to hire two separate cars rather than pay for the vehicle to sit there during a long reception. There are quite a few options for limos. A formal limousine seats four people, and sometimes a bride and groom will travel to the ceremony alone. Or, if you’d like to include the wedding party, stretch limos can allow

for six to 10. For larger parties and a flashier mode of transport, sport utility models like the Hummer and Explorer are popular and unique both inside and out. The larger models are often posh, with flashy lights and decorative interiors. CATCH THE COACH For larger wedding parties or for those that want a little extra elbow room, a party bus or a luxury coach is a great way to travel from the ceremony to the reception. It’s got all the amenities and style of a luxury limousine, but with more room to spare –these will seat up to 10 people very comfortably. Or, for even bigger parties, a passenger coach or a party bus can seat anywhere from 21 to 49 people so it can be a great way to get a few special guests and family members on the special ride between locations. Or, if you have a very small wedding and the ceremony and reception are separated by a long distance, this is a fun way to get all the guests in on the party right away. Like limousine services, passenger and luxury coach companies require a minimum number of hours. The size and type of coach will determine the hourly rate. Depending on the size of your party, it may make sense to hire two coaches - maybe a luxury coach for the bride, groom and attendants and a passenger coach for the guests. This provides guests with a little more flexibility, as well. TAKING THE TROLLEY An attractive, fun and picturesque alternative to a limo or a passenger coach is a trolley, if it’s available in your area. Trolleys generally can

WHY COLOMBIA? A Colombian honeymoon will immerse you in colonial charm, the wonders of nature, electric nightlife, romance, history, and plenty of excitement. Plus, it’s affordable, in terms of both time and money. Distance wise, Colombia is just 2.5 hours from Miami, or 3.5 hours from Houston. It also lands in a U.S. time zone, so jet-lag is nonexistent. On the whole, Colombia’s climate varies very little throughout the year. It’s tropical, hot, and humid; drier in summer, and wetter in winter. Cali’s temperature is pleasant year-round, with the peak travel season spanning early June to late September. During these months, the average temperature ranges from 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and precipitation is minimal. A BIT ABOUT CALI Santiago de Cali, Cali for short, is Colombia’s third-largest city by population and second-largest by area. It’s the capital of the Valle del Cauca department and the only major Colombian city along the Pacific Coast. Cali natives take pride in their vibrant culture. The city’s catchphrase: Cali es Cali y lo demás es loma, ¿oís? — which

means, “Cali is Cali, and the rest is just mountain, ya hear?” THINGS TO DO: SALSA DANCING, CAT SCULPTURES & HILLTOP HIKES First and foremost, Cali is known as the salsa capital of Colombia. Talk about romantic! Going out on the town at night to salsa clubs is the best way to experience this tradition. If you’re not game to dance, you can always just watch, but why not give it a whirl? You can even book private salsa lessons during the day, then dance with the locals at night. Just remember, whenever going out at night, to exercise some caution. Security in Colombia has improved significantly in recent years, but better safe than sorry. If you’re looking for other daytime activities, a great place to start is the Zoológico de Cali, recognized by many as the best zoo in all of Colombia. Here, you can see a wide array of exotic animals that you’d otherwise only find in the Amazon. For a more intimate interaction with some of nature’s creatures, visit the Andoke Butterfly Farm. The farm is more of a garden, thoughtfully and beautifully curated to attract all manner of butterflies and tropical bird species.


If your passions intersect at “art” and “cats,” the Gato de Tejada park is a must. It’s a public space centered around a three-ton bronze cat sculpture created by artist Hernando Tejada. The park now boasts many cat sculptures by other artists. Walking through the lovely green space, taking in the scenery and many unique works of art, would be a nice way to spend an hour or so in Cali. Cat sculptures not your thing? If you’re at all fascinated by historic planes, trains, and automobiles, the Museo Aereo Fenix, the aviation and transportation museum, is a fun destination. Another way to stretch your legs is, of course, by hiking! In Cali, hike the Cerro de las Tres Cruces — three crosses that sit high in the mountains overlooking the city. Hiking up to the crosses is a popular outdoor activity, even for the locals, and the views are spectacular. The hike will be most crowded on weekends, so start early in the day. It’s also advised that you

leave any valuables behind, as the hike is more isolated and the risk of robbery a bit increased. THINGS TO SEE: HISTORY, ART & CULTURE A visit to the Cristo Rey statue, reminiscent of Rio’s Christ the Redeemer, is a must. The statue is smaller than the Redeemer, but the views of Cali from the statue are magnificent. Spend some time in the Barrio San Antonio, Cali’s historic center. This is the oldest part of the city and home to quaint and trendy cafés, colonial architecture, quality restaurants and bars, and lots to explore. Here you’ll also find the Iglesia de San Antonio (San Antonio Church), located atop a hill with a striking view of the city and a nice surrounding park. Other churches worth visiting include Iglesia de la Ermita, also located in the historic district, and Iglesia de la Merced, a beautiful colonial cathedral and Cali’s oldest church. If you’re in search of even more history, there are number of museums for your viewing pleasure. The Museo de Arte Colonial is attached to the Merced cathedral and highlights colonial religious art. The Museo Arqueológico displays pre-Colombian artifacts created by the indigenous people. The Museo de Oro is all about gold, and the Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertullia features modern art, photography, and sculpture. Many Haciendas, homes that belonged to former sugar barons, are now also open as museums. Here, you’ll learn the process of cultivating sugar while also enjoying the beauty of a historic home. Hacienda Cañas Gordas is located on Cali’s southern border and is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the colonial homes. THINGS TO EAT Part of the fun of traveling to an exotic place like Colombia is experiencing the local cuisine! Here are some scrumptious eats you don’t want to miss: Arroz Atollado

is a dish that perfectly captures the flavors of Colombia. It’s made up of rice, potatoes, pork, chicken, and sometimes sausage, seasoned with middle eastern-inspired spices. Pandebono is a popular cheesy bread snack sold in bakeries, by street vendors, and at cafés. Come across some local empanadas vallunas? They’re a must! For a sweet treat, try cholado or raspado — a mix of shaved ice, flavored syrups, and condensed milk. Colombia is also home to many fruits that we don’t see stateside. Chontaduro is one such fruit — hard to describe, but worth trying. Lulo is another fruit with a very specific flavor, typically enjoyed as a raw fruit or as a juice. Lulada is a refreshing drink the combines the local lulo fruit with ice, sugar, water, and sometimes booze. A relaxed, summer wedding and a formal, winter wedding are better-suited to very different reception sites. Some examples: Rustic style: Barns, farms, country inns, and ranches. Traditional/Classic style: Ballrooms, banquet halls, hotels, country clubs, or community centers. These are often allinclusive! Natural/Open Air style: Waterfront, forest, vineyard, city park, or other locations where Mother Nature’s beauty shines. Also consider a Plan B for inclement weather. Non-Traditional style: Museums, zoos, planetariums, and antique stores. Urban/Industrial style: Downtown lofts, art galleries, and warehouses.

Intimate style: Unique spaces catered toward small weddings — historic homes, a small party room at your favorite restaurant, or a tent in your parents’ backyard (tented weddings can work for other styles, too). Once you’ve settled on your reception’s aesthetic and the type of spaces you wish to explore, it’s time to get to work. Here are the first three factors to consider during your hunt. Whether you’re planning to have a DJ or live band, ask about possible restrictions on the type, volume, or duration of music. Confirm that there’s adequate power and electrical outlets for speakers, mixers, and amplifiers, and consider the acoustics of the space. It’s not uncommon for a venue’s coordinator to invite future brides and grooms to stop by a scheduled wedding to get a feel for sound levels and acoustics. Find out if your caterer will provide table linens, plates, glasses, crystal, silverware, and serving pieces — otherwise you’ll need ample time to make other arrangements. Step 6: Hire the servers With a finalized menu all priced out and good to go, it’s time to determine how many wait staff you’ll need to serve the feast and keep the reception running smoothly. If you’re having a full open bar, too, that will require more help — one bartender for every 50 to 75 guests. Step 7: Get it in writing Sign a contract with your caterer only after you have all of the details spelled out: date, time, address of site, food items by course, beverages and bar guidelines, number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of cocktail hour, time meal is served, contact people, number of wait staff and bartenders, linens, terms of payment, and liability insurance. There will probably be an advance deposit when you sign the contract — and don’t forget to check the cancellation policy.

But if you’re keeping it classic and gownonly, you’ll see layers of lace, illusion backs with fine detailing and buttons, all sorts of sleeves, and long trains paired with cathedral-length veils. These frocks don’t only come in white: you can find them in an array of light colors like gold, blush, grey, and blue. Such soft neutral looks carry over into the bridal party with bridesmaids wearing neutral palettes and metallicsoften times mixing and matching. Of course, when they’re not wearing a barely-there color, you’ll find bridesmaids in rich jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, and amethyst purple. In short, it’s trendy to be on either end of the spectrum (pastel or highly saturated) rather than somewhere in between. SHOPPING MADE EASY attending bridal shows You may find that the more time you can save in planning your wedding the better. A Bridal Show can help. Here’s information and tips to help! Plan in Advance: Know your budget. Make a list of what you need most and what your budget will allow for each item and service. Types of Bridal Shows: Small intimate

shows average attendance is between 75-200 people and generally around 20-40 different vendors. These shows allow you much more time to talk with the individual wedding professionals, ask questions and get more in-depth answers. The second kind of show is much larger, averaging anywhere from 800 to 2000 attending and featuring anywhere from 100-250 different vendors. The biggest advantage to this kind of show is the wide range of vendors available and the beautiful displays for great wedding ideas. Pre-printed address labels: Most vendors will have some special drawing for gifts and prizes. Having these labels available will save you time and effort. Include your full name, address, phone number, wedding date and email address. Create a temporary wedding e-mail address: It’s free and can be deleted after your wedding date. Obviously you

will receive solicitation after the show. Quality vendors reaching out to provide specific wedding information and tips, along with any special offers they might have is a good thing. Who should come along: Yes, your fiancé should come along, especially if it’s just the two of you. Decisions can be made on the spot and you both will have a good time! Or, bring a couple of friends, your mother or a whole entourage. Date or Calendar Book: It might be appropriate to schedule an appointment at another time for a more in-depth conversation. Usually any show “specials” will also apply if a date and time is made for a follow-up discussion. There are times when you might want to book something right at the show such as limited availability and your date is still open. Or you might have already met with a vendor prior and are ready to make the commitment. Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. The odds are you’ll be on your feet for quite a while. You don’t want to leave until you’re ready, and not because your feet are too tired. Pressing onward when you’re feet hurt just isn’t any fun. Children: Avoid bringing small children to the show if possible. While you might not have a choice or it may be tempting to bring your flower girl along to see the neat wedding stuff, they are sure to tire more quickly then you. Prepare for information overload: When you find a vendor you are interested in, make a note about why. What struck you as appealing about this person? When you get home and you’re looking through 10 different photographers, your note may be the only thing you have to remember which ones you liked and why. Also, write down any good tips they might have given you.
