Jeanine Hannoun, captain of the varsity girl’s basketball team, has had an outstanding season. Although the Eagles haven’t seemed to catch a break, not winning a single game yet this season, Hannoun has still shined through the hard times. Being one of only two returning varsity players, Jeanine brings the team much needed experience. This is Hannoun’s fourth season in the Leyden basketball program, which also qualifies her to be a leader on the team. As captain she pushes the younger players to do their best. Hannoun says “I do everything I can to help the other players. I make sure they are all feeling alright and encourage them to push through the things they struggle with.” When the girls have a problem, the first person they go to is their captain. Then, if need be, Jeanine brings the problem to the attention of head coach Szatko. She makes sure that her teammates feel just as comfortable as she does. As captain, it is her job to set an example for the rest of the team. Hannoun says that she is “an example on the court.” She later adds, “There is a lot of pressure being the captain. I have to be ready and doing my best at all times. There is no slacking. I have to be at every single game and every single practice. Even though sometimes I have bad days or games, I still have to
Congratulations to St. Celestine Girl’s Basketball Team!
Local Student Named Athlete of the Week encourage the rest of the team to push themselves. This can be difficult, but I still make sure that I’m doing my job.” They look up to her for advice, both on and off of the court. She sets a positive environment for the rest of the team to follow in. Throughout the season she has been the lead point scorer, making her the perfect example to the younger girls. Not only has she been a lead scorer, but also throughout her senior season, she has had twelve charges. Despite dealing with a tough year, Jeanine makes sure to keep everyone’s heads held up high. With the rest of the season still ahead of the Eagle’s basketball team Jeanine says “ I hope that we get at least one win, so we will continue to work hard during practice.”
