{Typography 1- Form & Meaning} Assignments: Project Brief, Résumé System

Part 1 Using the principles of typography we have learned, as well as the new concepts we have been recently introduced to (hierarchy, system and grid) design and typeset your résumés. Résumés are a way for us to communicate to future employers what our skills and experience are. They are also an opportunity to express who we are as designers. During the course of this project we will design the following elements of the Résumé System: _Cover Letter _Résumé _Portfolio Image List _Business Card Résumés should include the following: Name/Contact Information, Education, Work History, Awards, Recognition, Associations/Clubs, Volunteer Work, Computer Skills, and anything else you feel is necessary to describe the person you are and what type of employee you might be. Begin by collecting all your information and start to organize it. This includes: writing your cover letter, making a list of all your portfolio pieces and typing out all the components of your résumé. Choose your typefaces wisely.

Part 3 Begin sketching ideas for your business card. These cards will be purely typographic. How can you express yourself as a designer in this small space, only using typography? How can you tie your résumé materials into the system of the card as well? You may use letterforms to create imagery, or a logo, or you may simply use a typographic treatment. The possibilities are endless. Your name, address, contact information and website(if you have one) should be present on your résumé components as well as your business card. Part 4 You may be surprised how paper stock, color, and texture can change the way a document is interpreted. You will choose paper for this project. However the business cards must be printed on some sort of card stock (unless you can convince me otherwise). You should print 2 copies of your résumé, cover letter, and portfolio list 8.5"×11". You will also print 1 set of business cards trimmed to 2"×3.5" each (enough copies for each person in the class to receive a card). Everything should be printed on a laser printer.

Part 2 Create sketches and start implementing grid structures. Begin to find ways to organize all the elements in your typographic system. How do these elements portray you as a designer? How do the 3 components of the cover letter, résumé and image list relate systematically to each other.
