{Typography 1- Form & Meaning} Syllabus

Course Description Typography is an essential discipline for Graphic Designers. Learning the basic principles of typography is a key component to a designer’s education and in this course we will discover and learn the formal and communicative properties of typography: letterform, font specification, style, meaning, texture and space. We will learn about the history of letterforms and typography, including the development of our modern alphabet, and technical and design innovations leading to the modern understanding of typography. An introduction to individual categories of type and typography will be discussed as well. Through a series of exercises and projects we will study traditional and expressive means of typesetting which will allow us to gain an appreciation for type in its many forms. Office Hours My drop-in office hours will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00PM–5:00PM. I will also be available by appointment (please email at least one day in advance, to schedule an appointment). My office is in KAC 26C.
