{Graphic Design 1- Graphic Form} Assignments: Project Brief, The 500

The following is a project borrowed from an exercise completed at RISD. It was modified to teach the students at MSU

Part 1 In this assignment you will explore the following five concepts: anomaly, balance, contrast, rhythm and texture, in an effort to examine the infinite relationships within form and space as well as inquire into the possibilities of multiple solutions.

about the basic formal principles of graphic design.

Each of you will choose an envelope with two small objects. These objects will serve as the visual content for the work in this assignment. You will use the grid sheets provided to produce thumbnail sketches. Each 11"×17" grid sheet contains 100 thumbnail frames. You will generate multiple thumbnail sketches per grid sheet with the goal of representing each of the five concepts listed above, ONE CONCEPT per sheet. You may use any kind of writing or drawing instrument or cut paper as long as it is black and well defined. The computer is NOT to be used at this time. Definitions Thumbnail Sketch - A thumbnail sketch is a reduced image of a graphic or document page used in order to view multiple layouts or ideas simultaneously. Anomaly - Something that deviates from what is standard, normal or expected. Balance - A state of equilibrium, equal distribution of weight, amount, etc. Composition or placement of elements of design, as figures, forms or colors in such a manner as to produce an aesthetically pleasing or harmoniously integrated whole. Contrast - Opposition or juxtaposition of different forms, lines or colors, etc.,to intensify each element’s properties and produce a more dynamic expressiveness. Rhythm - A patterned repetition of a motif, formal elements etc. ,at regular intervals or irregular intervals in the same or a modified form. Texture - The characteristic physical structure given to a material, an object etc., by the size, shape arrangement and proportions of its parts.
