Safety

Beyond Intrinsic Safety large image Design Concepts to Make a Product Safe In today’s world all customers that deal in the detection and mitigation of hazardous gas leakage are concerned with the detection equipment’s “intrinsic safety”. These ratings, though important, are often times misunderstood as to what they it really mean. At the end of the day, everyone needs to be safe and not cause an incident with the product they are using for a particular application when entering into a hazardous environment. In the US the common approval for this is a standard developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) known as UL913. There are numerous editions of this standard, but today as part of harmonization with international standards the most common is the 7th edition. Many products developed under previous editions have “grandfathered” approvals and are still safe to use. This standard is used by a dozen approval organizations (Nationally Recognized Testing Labs or NRTL’s) as the basis for approval here in the US. In Europe the recognized standard is ATEX. In Canada it is CSA. Other countries have adopted an international scheme known as IECEx. Unfortunately, having only one of these approvals does not automatically allow approval in another.

Protection concepts for the use of electrical products in a hazardous environment are characterized by the type of protection. Below is a chart showing the different protection concepts. The first column describes the type of protection while the last column describes how the

protection is accomplished. Most detection equipment utilize the “Intrinsic Safety” method of protection. This method restricts the amount of energy and heat that any component can create in particular gas hazards. One common misconception is that intrinsic safety is the same as explosion proof. It is not the same. This type of protection is strictly around the housing. A housing that will not allow propagation of a flame to the outside area. Though this is an effective method of protection it is typically not what is done for portable instruments.

As you can see there are many ways to make a product safe. The concepts applied for use in a hazardous environment is a science of its own. It is always good to consult with manufacturers that work with this every day to have your questions answered. Sensit Technologies for example has numerous approvals from around the

TOXIC GAS HAZARDS CARBON MONOXIDE: Undetecable by sight or smell What is carbon monoxide? (OSHA Text) Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. Although it has no detectable odor, CO is often mixed with other gases that do have an odor. So, you can inhale carbon monoxide right along with gases that you can smell and not even know that CO is present. CO is a common industrial hazard resulting from the incomplete burning of natural gas and any other material containing carbon such as gasoline, kerosene, oil, propane, coal, or wood. Forges, blast furnaces and coke ovens produce CO, but one of the most common sources of exposure in the workplace is the internal combustion engine. How does CO harm you? (OSHA Text) Carbon monoxide is harmful when breathed because it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain, and other vital organs of oxygen. Large amounts of CO can overcome you in minutes without warning— causing you to lose consciousness and suffocate. Each year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning, more than 20,000 visit the emergency room and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. Fatality is highest among Americans 65 and older.
