Gas Leak Detection The Art of Gas Detection Every day a variety of gases flow through infrastructure and piping systems around the globe providing the needed product to help us all enjoy the quality of life we live today. Some of these lines provide fuel such as natural gas and propane to our homes and businesses. Some provide a variety of gases used in the myriad of manufacturing processes to create the products needed by end users. These systems are installed to exacting standards and procedures to provide years of hazard-free operation. However, at some point, an alarm sounds, an unknown odor exists, or someone’s personal monitor activates. The system has fallen prey to the unpredictable phenomenon known as, the gas leak. These leaks may be obvious and easy to locate or they may be very difficult to find. A systematic approach and proper equipment is required when called upon to find a leak.

Properties of Gas

With any leak investigation it is important to know the basic properties of the gas(es) you are trying to detect or locate. All combustible gases require three components in the correct proportions to ignite. These components include: the combustible gas; an oxidizer; heat. The proper mixture is required for ignition to occur. The least amount of gas necessary to cause an ignition is that gases lower explosive limit (LEL). Leak detection products should all detect well below this limit.

Detection

Leak detection is typically performed in the part-per-million (PPM) range to look for those small changes in gas concentration that help locate the source of the leak. In the open air a measurement of a few PPM will help indicate the direction of larger concentrations. If measurements are made in LEL range in methane for example, 1% LEL methane is 500ppm. A good leak detector can sense 10ppm or less allowing the operator to more rapidly find the DETECTION PROFESSIONAL | WINTER 2012

101 area of higher concentrations. Ultimately as the operator moves closer to the source the range will require higher concentration measurements in LEL and possibly percent volume.

It is important when selecting equipment for leak detection you consider the range of gas measurements you will encounter. For small piping leaks a detector that measures PPM and LEL is probably adequate. For larger leaks a detector that can measure in the percent volume range may be necessary. This is especially true when locating underground gas leaks where the gas will likely accumulate in large concentrations. These detectors may


have a display and an audible indication. Most instruments require multiple sensors when detecting these wide ranges in concentrations. Be certain to review the specifications prior to using for the “wrong application”. All of them should be tested and calibrated according to the manufacturers recommendations. Sensors can be damaged or poisoned and such testing will confirm the product is able to perform its primary duty….protect you and your system.

Investigating Techniques

When responding to a leak call one should remember this is typically and odor or alarm complaint. It is important for the responder to treat each call as if it is their first. Be alert to all possible hazards and realize the situation may be rapidly changing. When preparing to approach an area suspected of leakage it is important to:

• Communicate with those involved in the report • Prepare your gas detector • Do not do anything that may produce a spark • Evaluate the area for gas build-ups that may endanger you or those in the area • Know where to disconnect the sources of gas • Communicate hazardous conditions

Documentation

After any leak investigation it is necessary to document the details of the leak. This should include location of leak, “as found” and “as left” information about gas concentrations, type of repair(s) made and descriptions of special conditions that may have existed. All of this information is important for maintenance records and incident reports. Details from such investigations can also help system operators in determining if conditions leading up to the leakage can be avoided in the future. Additionally full documentation regarding the test and calibration of the gas detection instrument should be kept. Such records provide evidence of properly working and maintained equipment. Such records should include type of instrument, serial number, date calibrated, gases tested and other important operational data. Some instrument companies have available automated systems that provide all data as well as alert systems to supervisors through email of instruments that are out of compliance. Gas leaks can be a serious problem. With proper procedures, tools and training these situations can be handled with confidence. Manufacturers of gas leak detectors are always available to help with selection and understanding the limitations of their equipment to allow you to safely determine the locations of leaks.

How It Works

The Metallic Joint Locator is a differential magnetometer. MJL detects a change in pipe cross section rather than absolute cross section. Moving along a featureless pipe gives a steady signal. Encountering a feature changes the signal.
