Tips For Clearing Your Skin The notion that acne is solely a teenage affliction is a misconception. Acne affects adults of all ages due to hormonal changes, stress and other factors. While getting rid of acne completely can be tough, here are a few ways to fight back when your skin rebels.
1. Create a well-rounded skincare regimen. Use a gentle cleanser to wash your face gently twice a day--once in the morning, and once before bed. Do not scrub. Scrubbing your face will not help to clear your acne, and it may worsen the problem by irritating your skin and encouraging an overproduction of sebum, or oil. Always wash your face before you hit the hay, because makeup, dirt, and sebum form a pore-clogging grime that can settle into your skin while you sleep or rub off on your pillowcase, which you rest your face on night after night. 3. Choose products with effective anti-acne ingredients. Cleansers that contain salicylic acid may help to clear your skin faster. Spot treatments generally contain benzoyl peroxide, which is a powerful acne-fighter (it can bleach clothing and pillowcases, however, so be careful). If chemical ingredients bother you, try using an herbal blemish stick or even tea tree oil, which is a powerful antiseptic essential oil. Avoid using multiple acne products at once, though, and start with only one application per day to see how your skin reacts.
4. If you can't beat it, cover it. Choose full-coverage foundations and concealers for the days when your breakouts are at their worst. Powdered mineral makeup is a good option; these formulas provide buildable coverage and generally do not clog pores. Wash your makeup brushes frequently or use disposable applicators to avoid breeding bacteria in your makeup that you could transfer to your face.
