Classifications of insomnia: Insomnia could be classified into two: according to the number of days of sleeplessness and according to cause. Under the second classification, it can be classified as primary or secondary insomnia. Here are some common insomnia causes: Non-medical causes Discomfort from the temperature of the room where you are sleeping could give you burden in catching a good sleep. A non-medical cause can be the lighting of the room, and if it happens that you are in an unfamiliar room, you will surely have this difficulty to sleep. If you are working on different shifts, your circadian rhythm would surely be affected and thus, sleep patterns will be changed leading to restlessness and insomnia. Another cause is prohibited drug use especially the stimulants like methamphetamine hydrochloride, which would lead to insomnia. Medical causes Specific medical conditions are considered special insomnia cases. These conditions include respiratory disorders or conditions that affect your breathing patterns. Overweight and obese individuals are also at risk in developing insomnia because they are prone to this condition called GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease or heartburn. Other medical conditions that could lead to insomnia are chronic pain, hyperthyroidism, Parkinson's disease among others. Some of these conditions are curable and some are not.
