Jaycees Lately October 2011 Volume 1, Issue 10 Kankakee Area Junior Chamber
Exciting Times are Upon Us The Haunted Trail is upon us! After months of preparation and planning the Kankakee Area Jaycees haunted event is “Back From the Dead!” If you get the opportunity, please thank Lucinda LaPierre, Jackie Teske, Brian Dauphin, Jeff Hogard, Ashley Eckle, and Scott Kuchel for all of the dedication they have had toward this event since last May! Also thank you to Raquel Holody and Ayla Connell for all of their help. We have two weekends to make this event a scary success! The dates of the trail are October 14, 15, 21, and 22. If you have not had the opportunity to sign up to volunteer yet, it is not too late! Even just one day would be helpful. We are covering a half mile of scary trail, so we need hayrack riders, ticket sellers, security people, and actors! This is an event you want to be a part of! Last month we had our other extremely large project. Dr. Ben Carson came to town to speak at Olivet Nazarene University. I believe I speak for everyone when I say he was one of, if not the best speaker I had ever heard. His topics ranged from everyday .scenarios, his life growing up, becoming a doctor, his great medical procedures, politics, and history. It was also a great opportunity to see just how much he meant to people. He has impacted people’s lives in so many ways. Thank you to Todd Brack for bringing Dr. Carson to us. Thank you to Todd, Jeremy Winge, Becky Hagge, and Nicole Issert for all of their tremendous work on this project. And thank you to the great number of volunteers we had to help run the event! Coming up in November we have our elections. Check out this newsletter to learn more about your nominees for next years Board of Directors! It’s going to be an exciting year! I look forward to seeing you all at our General Meeting this Sunday, October 16 at Beef O’Brady’s. Our social hour starts at 6 p.m. and our meeting begins at 7 p.m. We will have a special guest speaker, lawyer Kara Macz to speak about family law and wills. We will also be able to share some great stories about the first weekend of the Haunted Trail! See you all soon!

October Recognitions Officer of the Month:
We currently have 72 members! Our newest members are:
Come on Jaycees, let’s get that number up!! We love new members!! And remember to vote for your new membership VP!
Todd Brack has long wanted to meet Dr. Ben Carson. He made that dream a reality this past month when Carson came to Olivet. Carson has been a true inspiration to the Jaycees who were able to hear him speak. It was an honor to have him as our guest, and took quite a bit of effort on Todd’s part. Good work, Todd on bringing such a legend to our chapter! And good work to the entire team that made this event possible.
– Anne Fraher, Membership VP
Jaycee of the Month:
Meet our newest members: Heather Morgan Dan Noffke Welcome!! Great to have you!
Membership Spotlight Name: Andrew Ollis Occupation/affiliations: VP of Government Affairs with the Kankakee Regional Chamber of Commerce Hobbies: Finding new, interesting and profitable business ventures, American history and politics, climbing mountains, trying new things, listening to and wishing that I could play music (favorites are classic rock starting with the Beatles and following right along to Hendrix, Zeppelin, Clapton, Floyd and recently Joe Bonamassa). What would be (or is) your dream project? My dream project with the Jaycees would be one where the entire community would be excited to participate. A project that would unite the community toward one common goal for just a little while. What is something you gained from joining the Jaycees?: What I have gained most in working with the Jaycees is working with so many different people with so many different sets of skills. You can learn something from everyone because the make-up of skills, interests and experiences is different for every single person. You learn how to lead from a person who is a good leader, you learn how to organize from a person who is a good organizer and you learn how to speak from a good speaker; everyone has something that they are good at! What do you consider to be your best accomplishment (within or outside the Jaycees)? My greatest accomplishment, which every step of the way has been with a team, not just as an individual, is helping to organize the young professionals in this community. I work with the Kankakee Regional Young Professionals and the Kankakee Area Jaycees, and I am unbelievably proud of all of the good stuff that both organizations have done. Quite frankly I am ready to take it to the next level. I believe the public leadership in this area is ready for some fresh faces and I would love to see some of our leaders run for a Village Trustee position! We have a group of incredibly intelligent and motivated people with an attitude of getting things done, and that attitude needs to be shared with our community!!!
Randy Outhouse has been an invaluable member since he joined in June when we cornered him at the Friendship Festival Beer Garden. Randy immediately got involved making visitations and working on fundraisers. He then conducted our financial advice training at our September GM. He also secured our October trainer for us. Randy is a leader and has also helped us all keep a level head and remember that we need to take time to relax and just have fun on top of all of the wonderful work we do! I look forward to seeing Randy on the Board next year.
The Bourbonnais Township Park District Presents: The Kankakee Area Jaycees Haunted Trail “Back from the Dead” On October 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd, the Kankakee Area Jaycees will be hosting a haunted trail in conjunction with the Sleepy Hollow event at the Perry Farm. The trail will be open from 5:30-11pm with a kid friendly trail from 5:30-7:30pm. We will need volunteers to work the Haunted Trail October 14, 15, 21, and 22. You do not necessarily need to help out all four days, but we will need a lot of volunteers. What would you like to help with? Be an actor in the Trail! Ride the hayracks with the guests! Take tickets! Sell concessions! There’s so much to do to help out with this fantastic event! Look out for an email to come soon! We will be ordering tshirts and hoodies for the Haunted Trail! Please contact Lucinda LaPierre at email@example.com or Jackie Teske at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information on the Haunted Trail event.
What does being a Jaycee mean to you? Being a Jaycee mean developing professional skills and developing a community plain and simple. Page 2

I work with youth at St. Paul’s Lutheran and I’m constantly telling them to get out and serve people and I wanted to practice what I preach and the Jaycees was a perfect outlet to do just that! Have you ever/Do you currently hold a board position?: Yes What position and when?: For the past year I have served as the secretary. What position you are currently running for?: I am excited to be running for the position of president! What can you bring to the table for this position?: I am excited about the Jaycees and I feel I have personally gained from being a Jaycee and so I want everyone to be able to have the opportunities I had to grow personally and professionally. What are you hoping to accomplish in your run as a board member (specific to your position)?:I am hoping to continue what Jeremy and Carol started in making the Kankakee Area Jaycees the best chapter in the state! I’d like to see our chapter be the community organization that people in our area look to for help. I hope to get our name out in a positive way by participating in even more community events and developing our own quality community events that the Kankakee Area Jaycees can be known for. I would like to see two new chapters get started in our region. I want to double our membership, we are the Kankakee Jaycees after all, and we can do it! Everyone wants to be a Jaycee they just don’t know it yet, make the argument they can’t refute! What are you hoping to get out of running for this position?:I hope to continue to grow as a leader and have some great experiences and make memories and friends that will last a lifetime!
Business Vice Presidential Candidate: Lucinda LaPierre How long have you been a member of the Kankakee Area Jaycees?: One Year Why did you get involved with the Jaycees?: I got involved in the Jaycees to meet new people and to get involved in the community. I felt like I needed to broaden my horizons and challenge myself beyond my job. Have you ever/Do you currently hold a board position?: Yes What position and when?: I am currently the Communications Director What position you are currently running for?: I am running for the Business VP What can you bring to the table for this position?: As a social worker, my job requires that I am very detail oriented and pay attention to deadlines. I carry this into my Jaycee work as well. I believe that I can bring ongoing support to Jaycees in completing CPGs in a complete and timely manner. I will also be supervising the Communications Director, a position which I currently hold. I look forward to supervising that position and helping that position grow as the Chapter grows. The Business VP is the person who fills in for the President when he/she is unavailable. I believe I can bring support and assistance to the President when needed and help represent the best interest of the Jaycee members. What are you hoping to accomplish in your run as a board member (specific to your position)?: As the Business VP I am hoping to bring more structure to the position and to the Chapter. It is important that CPGs and other paperwork is completed in a timely manner. As the supervising officer for certain projects, I will provide support, guidance, and assistance to those chairpersons running projects under the Business Area of Opportunity. Also, in working with the Communications Director, I hope to expand our marketing of the Jaycees in the community. The Jaycees have a long history in the community and I would like to see our chapter become a household name again. I would like to have a presence at many if not all of the local events in an attempt to not only gain members but also to learn about the community needs. What are you hoping to get out of running for this position?: I am hoping to grow and learn as a person both personally and professionally. I look forward to working with the new board and Jaycee members to create a strong chapter and presence in the community. I hope to work closely with the new chapter president to learn more about the Jaycees and what it takes to potentially be the president of the chapter in the future. Page 3

Why did you get involved with the Jaycees?: I like giving back to the community, but was looking for a more active way to do it. I have done the Polar Plunge to raise money for Special Olympics for 7 years. When I was in the Radiography program at KCC, we did a lot of charitable walks. Have you ever/Do you currently hold a board position?: No I do not. What position you are currently running for?: I am running for the position of Secretary. What can you bring to the table for this position?: I like to try and know a little about bit about everything that is going on; events, socials, trainings. I believe that my enthusiasm for the position and the Jaycees will definitely help as well. What are you hoping to accomplish in your run as a board member (specific to your position)?: I really want to get a better understanding of how the Jaycees work.
