September GA The second trimester’s General Assembly will be held September 7-9th in Fairview Heights, IL (near St Louis). A full registration for the weekend is now up to $75. There are always a lot of free trainings held. Competitions will also be going on all weekend. See the article on competitions to find the schedule and Speak Up topic. The GA is a time to get together with friends and Jaycees from throughout the state of Illinois. The awards presentations are a great time to get inspired and to get ideas for new projects we can run in our community. This GA will also be the host to elections for the State Officer positions for 2013. If you want to attend please contact me at jax.teske@gmail.com and I will fill you in on how to register. If you have any questions about the GA don’t hesitate to ask! Most of the board members have attended at least one GA in the past. I will have registration forms available at this Sunday’s General Meeting. Come prepared with cash or a check made payable to “Gateway Region Jaycees”. (If you write a check you get $5 off of the registration fee). Jackie Teske Secretary

Competitions The time has come for our third and final article on competitions. This last article will look at the scoring process for the competitions. Next month’s GA will host many different competitions that we have talked about the last few months. The schedule for the competitions will be: Write-Up, Friday 9/7 9:00-9:30pm Jaycee Jeopardy, Friday 9/7 9:30-10:00pm Portfolio/Interview, Saturday 9/8 2:00-2:30pm Speak Up, Saturday 9/8 2:30-3:15pm Debate, Saturday 9/8 3:15-4:15pm Remember, if you are on the fence about competing and think, “I’ll just compete next time in January.” Sorry, no can do! In order to compete at the year-end GA in January, you have to have competed in either May’s or September’s GA. Now is the time to seize the day! The Speak Up topic for the September GA prepared speech is: With the Olympic Games front and center this summer we all heard a lot of stories of athletes facing adversity, overcoming fear, and going beyond even their own limitations to achieve greatness in their sport. What does “going for the gold” mean to you in your life and how do you plan to achieve it? Please pre-register for the competition you are choosing to participate in. You can find the link on the Illinois Jaycees website at http://iljaycees.org/. Good luck to everyone participating! I know President Becky and I are planning on competing. Who else wants to join in on the fun? Jackie Teske Secretary

Competitions Scoring There are some basic guidelines as to how each competition is scored. Below is a summary per competition. Portfolio/Interview Competitions For all three of these competitions; Armbruster, Brownfield, and Mungenast, the scoring is the same. There are two different categories that are judged, the Portfolio itself and the Interview. For the portfolio, much of it is making sure you have all the correct material (resume, letters of recommendation, and substantiating material) and that it is presented in a clear, concise manner. Make sure that your letters of recommendation and substantiating material reflect what you have listed on your resume. Be sure to have someone proofread your portfolio. Nothing says sloppy like misspelled words! For the Interview portion, you will be placed in front of a panel of judges. There are points that are easy to earn. Make sure you are dressed professionally, use proper business etiquette (greet the judges, thank them for their time, etc.), and your demeanor. The bulk of the points come from your responses to the questions. Take a few seconds to organize your thoughts. Your answers should have structure; have an opening, body and conclusion. Use supporting information, personal experiences, and examples while showing enthusiasm and that you know what you are talking about. There are some deductions that can be taken during both portions of these competitions. NEVER identify your home Chapter or State! Do not use notes or props. Speak Up Competitions For Speak Up competitors, judging is based on 4 categories; Delivery, Content, Salesmanship, and Continuity. Each category has subcategories and all are graded on a 1-5 point scale. For your speech, you want to dress professionally; a business suit of some sort is the best idea. You don’t want to look sloppy, make sure your clothes are not ill-fitting and are clean. You want to be sure your voice is clear and concise and loud enough for the judges to hear. Make eye-contact. Don’t make wild gestures but don’t stand completely still either, you want to have a balance of movement. When giving your speech, make sure you are prepared. Have it well thought out and organized. Be sure it is relevant to your topic, give facts, but be sure you are sincere and that you show enthusiasm. Have a clear opening, body and closing. Again there are deductions that can be taken. Do not identify your home Chapter or State. Do not use notes or props. Keep to the attire rules. You can also be deducted points for time infractions. For Master Speak Up your first (Prepared) speech should be 5-7 minutes and your second (Impromptu) speech should be 3-5 minutes. For regular Speak Up your first (Prepared) speech should be 3-5 minutes and your second (Impromptu) speech should be 1-3 minutes

Competitions Scoring (Continued) Write Up Competition There are general rules of thumb when it comes to Write Up. You want to be very conscious of your grammar, neatness, spelling and format. You are physically writing your essay so the judges will need to be able to decipher what they are reading! Be sure that you are keeping to the topic at hand. Be sure to have a clear introduction, body with supporting ideas, and a clean conclusion. Deductions that can be taken include identifying your Home Chapter or State, repetitive use of phrases, and descriptive words, and use of assistive devices (thesaurus, dictionary, references, and technology).

Debate For debate, there are various items that go into judging. There is a specific order you must follow. Keeping that in mind, you also get judged on Definition, Content, Debating Skills and Teamwork. Be sure you stick to the topic and be clear. Keep to your time allotted. Deductions that can be taken include identification of your home Chapter or State and straying from your time restraints. Jaycee Jeopardy The initial round of this competition is a written questionnaire. Questions can be multiple choice, true/false, and short answer. Competitors with the highest scores will advance to the final round which is held in the style of Jeopardy. Contestants will be asked to give written answers to oral questions.

Bachelor Auction The Kankakee Area Jaycees are putting on a new project this fall in conjunction with GiGi’s Playhouse. We will be hosting a 1920s inspired Speak Easy Bachelor Auction. It will be held November 2nd. For more information or to be a part of the committee, please contact a board member. The next meeting will be held soon. Watch the blog for details!

Cemetery Walk The Kankakee Park District has asked for our help again with parking for the annual Cemetery Walk. There are 2 shows, at 11am and 2pm. 6-8 people will be needed for each shift (or you can work all day). We will need the first round of volunteers to be there by 9am. Let someone on the board know if you are interested in participating.

UPCOMING EVENTS Christmas Shopping Spree One of the most rewarding projects we do as a chapter is our annual Children’s Shopping Spree. We raise money and are able to give underprivileged children in Kankakee County a Christmas they might not normally be able to have. If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of, contact chairwoman Raquel Holody at crtrjo@yahoo.com for more details.

The blog will continue to offer readers the latest news and volunteer opportunities available to Kankakee Area Jaycee members. The blog is conveniently located at our web site, www.k3jc.org. Check out the blog often for new information about upcoming volunteer opportunities. Blog topics are always welcome and may be e-mailed to Christina Norvell at clnorvell4@yahoo.com. We REALLY Want To Hear From You! The newsletter is truly the voice of the Jaycees and is our opportunity to tell our story to prospective members and the community. Every member of the Jaycees plays an important role in our success as an organization. Become more involved! The newsletter has always been open to contributions from anyone in the organization; however, we have only received a few articles from the general membership. Remember each of you has a reason for joining the Jaycees and that is a great place to start. We invite you to reflect on an event you are involved in, look ahead to an event you are part of, tell us why you joined the Jaycees and/or what you hope to accomplish. The sky is the limit! Getting involved not only helps you understand the vision of the Jaycees, but it will help you grow as a person and a professional. Make an IMPACT! General membership contributions are due to Jackie or me by the first Friday of each month. Please contact me, Jeff Hogard at jesterzcourt@gmail.comor Jackie Teske at jax.teske@gmail.com if you have any questions or need assistance. We look forward to hearing what you have to say!

Jaycee Member Spotlight Name – Christina Norvell Occupation – Fine Jewelry Associate at J. C. Penney Hobbies – I enjoy spending time with family, friends and being involved with the Jaycees. I also enjoy listening to music, watching movies and curling up with a good business biography book. What would be (or is) your dream project? – My dream project would be to partner with an organization or business to collect used prom dresses. The used prom dresses would be given to teens that want to attend their high school prom but cannot afford to pay for a dress.

What is something you gained from joining the Jaycees? - Confidence is the biggest payoff I have seen since joining the Kankakee Area Jaycees last August. I am more confident about taking the initiative with projects our chapter is working on.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment (within or outside the Jaycees)? – I am most proud of the new Jaycees Lately Blog. . It was very gratifying to see an idea go from concept to application on the web site. What does being a Jaycee mean to you? – The one word that stands out in my mind is empowerment. There is no goal too small or too big that cannot be achieved with motivation and support from fellow Jaycees. Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself? – I am also a volunteer tutor for the Adult Literacy Initiative Expanded Program at Kankakee Community College. I have spent the past year tutoring a learner with reading and spelling skills.

We Believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life. ~ Jaycees Creed ~
