Academic Course Descriptions
Science 6th Grade Earth Science The Sixth Grade Georgia Standards of Excellence for science are designed to give all students an overview of common strands in earth science including, but not limited to, meteorology, geology, astronomy, and oceanography. Sixth grade students use records they keep and analyze the data they collect, plan and carry out investigations, describe observations, and show information in different forms. They are able to recognize relationships in simple charts and graphs and find more than one way to interpret their findings. They replicate investigations and compare results to find similarities and differences. Sixth graders study weather patterns and systems by observing and explaining how an aspect of weather can affect a weather system. They are able to construct explanations based on evidence of the role of water in Earth processes, recognize how the presence of land and water in combination with the energy from the sun affect the climate and weather of a region. They use different models to represent systems such as the solar system and the sun/moon/Earth system. They study uses and conservation of Earthâ€™s natural resources and use what they observe about the Earthâ€™s materials to infer the processes and timelines that formed them.
7th Grade Life Science The Seventh Grade Georgia Standards of Excellence for science are designed to give all students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary life science standards to high school biology standards. The purpose is to give all students an overview of common strands in life science including, but not limited to, diversity of living organisms, structure and function of cells, heredity, ecosystems, and biological evolution. Seventh grade students keep records of their observations, use those records to analyze the data they collect, recognize patterns in the data, use simple charts and graphs to represent the relationships they see, and find more than one way to interpret their findings. They make and use observations to explain the diversity of living organisms and how the organisms are classified, how they reproduce and how genetic information is passed from parents to their offspring. They use different models to represent systems such as cells, tissues, and organs. They use what they know about ecosystems to explain how matter cycles and energy flows through the ecosystem. They use the concepts of natural selection and fossil evidence to construct explanations about the diversity of life that they see. Science 8th Grade Physical Science The Eighth Grade Georgia Standards of Excellence for science are designed to give all students the necessary skills for a smooth transition from elementary physical science standards to high school physical science standards. The purpose is to give all students an overview of common strands in physical science including, but not limited to, the nature of matter, conservation of energy, energy transformations, conservation of matter, kinematics, and dynamics. These standards are not intended in any way to take the place of the high school physical science standards. Eighth grade students keep records of their observations, use those records to analyze the data they collect, recognize patterns in the data, use simple charts and graphs to represent the relationships they see, and find more than one way to interpret their findings. They develop conceptual understanding of the laws of conservation of matter and conservation of energy, are able to explain the characteristics of the motion of an object (speed, acceleration) and the way that forces may change the state of motion of an object. They use what they observe to explain the difference between physical and chemical changes and cause and effect relationships between force, mass, and the motion of objects. Students in eighth grade construct explanations based on evidence on the difference and similarities between electromagnetic and mechanical waves. Eighth graders plan and carry out investigations, describe observations, and show information in graphical form. The students replicate investigations and compare results to find similarities and differences. *8th Grade students are offered an opportunity to complete the 9th Grade Physical Science course for high school credit. Below is a description of the 9th Grade Physical Science Course.
9th Grade Physical Science The Physical Science Georgia Standards of Excellence are designed to continue student investigations of the physical sciences that began in grades K-8, and provide students the necessary skills to have a richer knowledge base in physical science. The standards in this course are designed as a survey of the core ideas in the physical sciences. Those core ideas will be studied in more depth during in the chemistry and physics courses. The physical science standards include abstract concepts such as the conceptualization of the structure of atoms and the role they play in determining the properties of materials, motion and forces, the conservation of energy and matter, wave behavior, electricity, and the relationship between electricity and magnetism. The idea of radioactive decay is limited to the understanding of whole half-lives and how a constant proportional rate of decay is consistent with declining measures that only gradually approach to zero. Social Studies 6th Grade: Sixth grade is the first year of a two year World Area Studies course. Throughout the course sixth grade students study Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia. The goal of this two year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live. The domains are focused around geography, government and civics, economics, and history. These domains are interwoven and the standards allow for in depth knowledge and understanding.
7th Grade: Seventh grade is the second year of a two year World Area Studies course. The goal of this course is to acquaint students with the world in which they live. Through the course, seventh grade students study Africa and Asia. The domains are focused around geography, government and civics, economics, and history. These domains are interwoven and the standards allow for in depth knowledge and understanding.
8th Grade: At the eighth grade level, our social studies curriculum focuses on the study of Georgia historically, economically, geographically and through government. These domains are interwoven and the standards allow for in depth knowledge and understanding. Included in the big picture of Georgia Studies is the relationship between Georgia and the United states as well as countries overseas.
Connection Course Descriptions
Visual Arts 6th Art Connection: Visual art builds opportunities for self-reflection and the creation of individual identity. Transitioning through pre-adolescence with increasing independence, and social awareness, students benefit from structure that allows room for exploration and development of personal expression (Georgia Department of Education, 2009, p. 47). 7th Art Connection: Visual art continues to build opportunities for self-reflection, and exploration of ideas.Students benefit from structure that acknowledges personal interests and develops individual identity. Social awareness, concern for personal appearance and peer relationships gain importance (Georgia Department of Education, 2009, p. 53). 8th Art Connection: The student engages in the creative process, finds and solves problems, and pursues open-ended inquiry through the production of artworks. The student develops aesthetic understanding through the examination of his or her art and the artwork of others (National Standards 2 &3). Description: The student develops creativity, critical-thinking, and problem solving skills. The student engages in aesthetic dialogue, making effort toward constructing meaning as he or she encounters and produces works of art (Georgia Department of Education, 2009, p. 60). Visual Arts (High School Credit): High School Visual Arts is an advanced art class for students with a strong interested in learning technical drawing and sculpture skills. Students will learn the elements and principles of design, understand how to identify them in exemplar artworks, and how to use them creatively within their own artworks. Students will be assigned a weekly sketchbook assignment to demonstrate that they understand the topics discussed in class. All art assignments are difficult and require a great amount of patience and perseverance. Students will be evaluated on creativity and skill. High School Credit Prerequisites: A strong interest in and appreciation for the visual arts An intent to take visual arts in High School A recommendation from the art teacher *If the students has never had art before they can show the art teacher a drawing as a recommendation request Students do not have to have previous art classes or art training 13
Chorus Chorus Connection (6th and 7th grade): This course will use music as the studentsâ€™ primary source of learning. Students will gain the necessary skills to read, understand, and perform choral music from all eras. Students will have the opportunity to broaden their musical experiences through the learning, listening to, and performance of different genres of music.
Chorus (High School Credit): Students in High School credit chorus learn and sing music at an accelerated pace. They start work on ear training, learn major and minor key signatures, sing advanced sight-reading, and delve deeper into music theory. Students in high school credit chorus will perform in four concerts over the course of the school year. Students in High School Credit Chorus MUST have taken 7th grade chorus, unless given special permission from the instructor. Show Choir/Advanced Chorus (8th Grade Only): Show choir is a class designed for chorus students who are interested in combining the arts of singing and dancing. It is an audition-only group that is offered to chorus students only. Show Choir performs pop songs as well as songs from the stage and screen.
Band 6th Grade Band: This is best setting for a student interested in learning an instrument can be! As a beginning band, students in this ensemble are expected to have little to no experience with even basic music concepts - we start from square one! We begin with basic musical skills before students even pick up an instrument. Students then find an instrument (either by renting one through a company that cooperates with the school or by borrowing a school-owned instrument) and begin a possible lifelong journey of learning that instrument. They will play five concerts throughout the year, where you will be able to witness their amazing progress as a young musician! Students must sign up at the end of the 5th Grade to be considered for 6th Grade Band.
7th Grade Band: In 7th Grade Band, students are going to build upon the skills that they have learned in 6th Grade. There are five concerts for this group, and numerous band activities that are available to the student that take place outside of the JMS Band program. Therefore, it is a requirement that students have been in band before 6th Grade before signing up for the course in 7th Grade, Any student seeking to join 7th Grade Band without having taken 6th Grade Band needs permission from the band director.
Band (8th Grade Secondary): This class is for any student that is looking to learn a second instrument in addition to their first instrument, or any student who may have missed out on learning an instrument in 6th Grade Band that wants that "from the start" approach. There are five concerts for this group throughout the year, and instruments can either be rented or borrowed from the school. Any student that wishes to join 8th Grade Secondary Band must sign up for the course with Mr. Pace before the end of their 7th Grade year. If a student was in 7th Grade Band and wants to join Secondary must also enroll in 8th Grade Band on their primary instrument. Again, no prior experience on an instrument is necessary for this course.
Band (High School Credit): A student will be permitted to take 8th Grade Band for HS Credit (Course catalog: BAND I) if he/she meets the following criteria: 1) The student has been enrolled in the JMS 7th grade band for their entire 7th grade year. 2) The instrument for 7th grade band matches the instrument for 8th grade band. 3) The student demonstrates he/she is serious about taking HS credit by having no office referrals in band/other classes throughout their 7th grade year. 4) A recommendation/permission form, signed by the band teacher and parents, must be submitted at the time requested. *The band teacher reserves the right to accept or deny students the opportunity to enroll in BAND I based 15 on these requirements. Exceptions will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Music Appreciation Music Appreciation (6th and 7th Grade): In this course, students will bring in any experience they have with music (Elementary and Academy music classes, piano lessons, singing, listening) and will build upon it in a non-stressful environment. Students will learn rhythm through group activities, they will perform in small groups for different assignments, they will learn about how music has evolved since its very beginning, and they will share what new and exciting things are happening in the music scene today. The idea is to open student's minds up to styles of music they haven't heard before, and to allow for a greater appreciation of music as an art form in today's society.
Spanish 6th-8th Spanish Connection: Spanish is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture of the Spanish speaking world. Students will begin to develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. We will begin the study of the vocabulary and grammatical structures of the Spanish language through activities, projects, and songs. The main goal is to begin to communicate in the language and to expose students to the Spanish culture.
Problem Solving 6th-8th Problem Solving Connection Description: Problem Solving is a year long, creative project driven class predicated on student driven learning and teaching. The problem solving projects and activities are based on STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts,and Math) with an emphasis on focusing on grade level math and science standards and building from there. Students will be divided into groups and work on several different problems/projects during the school year. The class will provide a hands-on experience that will allow students to use their creative problem solving and leadership skills as well as provide an opportunity to learn to work in a cooperative environment with a group. Students are placed in problem solving each semester by using a global multi-criteria rubric.
Coaching 6th-8th Math Coaching Connection: The goal of this course is to focus on actively engaging students in the development of mathematical understanding by using manipulatives' and a variety of representations, by working independently and cooperatively to solve problems, and by using estimation and efficient computation. To encourage good behavior and hard work, students will be rewarded in many ways. Each week students will spend time working on IXL on the computer. Students will also do different activities and lesson to re-mediate and help with math standards. Students in Exploring AgScience learn about agriculture, including the importance of agriculture, plant science, animal science, and about the FFA. Each student has to have a 6 Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project where they do activities related to agriculture outside of school.

Each student has to have an 8 hour Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project where they do activities related to agriculture outside of school.
Students in Exploring AgScience learn about agriculture, including the importance of agriculture, forestry, agricultural mechanics, plant science, animal science, and about the FFA. Each student has to have a 10 hour Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project where they do activities related to agriculture outside of school.
Basic Agricultural Science (High School Credit): Students in Basic Agricultural Science learn about agriculture, including the importance of agriculture, forestry, agricultural mechanics, plant science, animal science, natural resources, soil sciences, food science, agricultural careers, biotechnology, and about the FFA in this year long course. Each student has to have 20 hour Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) project where they complete activities related to agriculture outside of school. Students in this class are strongly encouraged to become members of JMS FFA. Jefferson Middle FFA Chapter: The Agricultural Education has three parts: classroom instruction, FFA, and SAE. Every Agriculture student is encouraged to join the Jefferson Middle FFA Chapter where students can learn about agriculture, become better leaders, make friends, compete in FFA events, and have fun. Yearly dues are $25 and include an FFA t-shirt.

Business and Computer Science 6-8 Business and Computer Science: In today’s society, knowing how to use a computer is a basic skill that everyone should possess. Business Ed/Computer Applications will enable your student to learn or improve their computer skills with practical applications of word processing, spreadsheets, Internet, multimedia, graphics and presentation software. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about valuable employability skills, participate in career exploration, and so much more!
Introduction to Business and Technology (High School Credit): Introduction to Business & Technology provides an overview of business and technology skills required for today’s business environment. Students will learn essentials for working in a business environment, managing a business, and owning a business. An emphasis will be placed on developing proficient fundamental computer skills required for all career pathways. Employability skills are integrated into activities and projects throughout the course. Professional communication skills and practices, problem-solving, ethical and legal issues, and the impact of effective presentation skills are taught in this course as a foundation knowledge to prepare students to be college and career ready. Introduction to Business & Technology is a course that is designed for all high school students, but is being offered at JMS for 8th graders to earn a high school credit.

(FBLA-PBL) is the oldest and largest national organization for students preparing for careers in business. FBLA-PBL prepares students for “real world” professional experiences. Physical Education 6th-8th PE Connection Description: This course is designed to provide a systematic progression of movement experiences for the students through life time sports and games. During the course, the students will be introduced to sports that they can participate in throughout their life. Sports such as, physical fitness programs, weight training, badminton, basketball, bowling, flag football, golf, orienteering, angling, pickle-ball, ping pong, soccer, softball, speedball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Personal Fitness is designed to help students learn and create habits that will be beneficial in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Students will improve all five areas of health related fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition) through physical activities. The students will also be required to participate in the state mandated physical fitness test entitled Fitness Gram. Students will be required to dress out AND participate in all class activities every day.
6th-8th Weight Training Connection Description: Weight Training is an excellent opportunity for students to learn many different ways to become physically fit. Students will learn and perform many different types of lifts and exercises including free weight and body weight exercises. We will learn which exercises target which muscles in the body. The goal of this class is to help students physically develop and prepare themselves to compete at a high level in any athletic event or sport they chose to participate in here at JMS or in the future at the high school. Even with no intention of joining an athletic team, then this class can still help students achieve personal fitness goals that they may have.
PE/Health High School Credit Course Description: The purpose of this year long course if to give every student the opportunity to learn and practice informed decision making in matters of personal health. Keep in mind, this is a required course for graduation. If you fail either Health or Personal Fitness part of this course, you must take BOTH parts again.
PE/Health High School Credit Course Requirements: 1.
The student must have a 90 or above in PE. Any student who has never taken PE must have an informal recommendation from a fellow connection teacher to be considered for the Personal Fitness/Health HS Credit course. The student must have passed all their academic classes. The student must have no more than 7 absences per semester. 22
