EndNote Online What is EndNote Online? If you are an undergraduate or taught postgraduate we would recommend EndNote Online via the Web of Science as it will probably have all the functionality you need to store and use references. It can be accessed from anywhere at any time, is supported by Cardiff University, and it is free!

1 Setting up EndNote Online 1.1 Sign up to EndNote Online 1. Go to http://wok.mimas.ac.uk.abc.cardiff.ac.uk (and log in using your University username and password) 2. Click the orange Click here to access Web of Science button 3. Click EndNote 4. Click Register; and then sign up for a free account

1.3 Install the Word plug-in (on your own computer) Follow these instructions if using your own computer When using a home computer, you must install this plug in before you can add references to your library.

1. Click EndNote 2. Click the Downloads tab 3. Download the Cite While You Write plug-in (this may take a while to load) 4. Follow the on screen instructions

2 Adding references to your library The example below uses Web of Science. However, each database has different instructions for adding references to your library. See Appendix A (page 17) for instructions for other key databases.

2.1 Adding references from Web of Science (and BIOSIS) 1. Tick the Checkbox next to each article 2. Click Save to EndNote online 3. Click Send

3 Working with your EndNote library 3.1 Organising your references into groups Once you have imported your references you can keep them organised using groups. 1. Tick the Checkbox next to each article 2. Click Add to group‌ and select an existing group or New group

3.2 Sharing groups

1. Click Organize 2. Click Manage My Groups 3. Click Manage Sharing 4. Click Start sharing this group. 5. Enter e-mail addresses (these must be for people with an EndNote Online account) 6. Click Apply

3.3 Creating a bibliography on its own A standalone bibliography can easily be created using all or some of the references without needing to insert and format them in a Word document. 1. Click Format 2. Select Bibliography 3. Select the relevant group of References 4. Select a Bibliographic style 5. Select a File format 6. Click Save, E-Mail, or Preview & Print

1. Place the cursor where you want the citation 2. Click the EndNote tab 3. Click Insert Citations 4. Search for an author or keyword; then click Find 5. Click Insert
