From the desk of... Robin Siegal

President, Board of Trustees president@cbiboca.org

I recently read a very insightful article in Tablet Magazine (if you don’t get this online, you’re really missing out: tabletmag.com). It was about how to be grateful. How we, as parents, should model gratitude for our children in our daily lives. Congregation B’nai Israel always strives to deliver the right message of gratitude and how to model it. I can attest to one way CBI helps us model gratitude year after year—for 33 years to be exact! Every year, close to 4,000 individuals join us to receive a hearty Thanksgiving meal, complete with dessert and entertainment, at our Annual Feed the Hungry event at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Over 300 volunteers, as well as numerous country clubs, restaurants, and private donors, come together in this momentous effort coordinated by Kantor Center for Justice Chairs Greg and Cindy Jacob, Sharon Stein, and our Programming Coordinator, Minda Shaiman. I am always amazed how they pull this off, and how much this event improves every year. I love when our congregants, NCECE

Steve Allen

Executive Director

steve.allen@cbiboca.org "Chanukah oh Chanukah come light the Menorah." It is amazing after my many years in the Pop music world that this tune still stays with me and my family as opposed to the many others I was involved with. Perhaps it's the time of year when people travel and get visits from family so their minds are less stressed and the music acts as a soothing medicine. This time is one of reinvigoration and anticipation of the year to come. It's hard to fathom that the year 2000 celebration was 17 years ago, and if you think about it, equivalent to your newborn's time from crib to High School graduation! Just think of all the life events that took place for you and your family during that time, both happy and sad. It is so important to enjoy each day and try to end the day on a positive note. During the course of my 19 years as an Executive Director, I have been faced with many "situations" that were challenging, painful, and complicated. It is so important to treat each issue differently and understand exactly what is transpiring in someone's life as they speak to you. A few years ago, as the Chairman of the Education program for our large NATA (National Association for Temple Administration) national conference, one of our guest speakers was a relatively unknown (at the time) Jewish life coach named Deborah Grayson Riegel. While planning her presentation, she told me she wanted to do a 6

preschool and SLJ religious school students and their families come to help serve, clean up, dance and visit with the recipients, and just enjoy each others company. The warmth and love felt on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving every year sustains my hope that we are modeling the compassion and gratitude that we all need to feel this time of year. Another thing to be grateful for is Chanukah, which will begin concurrently with Christmas Eve this year. I am grateful for the bravery of the Maccabees, who opposed the oppression of the Greeks, and for the one day’s supply of oil that lasted for eight nights so there was time to prepare more for the menorah in the Temple. Join us at Friday Night Lights, our Shabbat and Chanukah Celebration on December 16th! I wish you all a beautiful Chanukah, filled with gratitude, light and love!

3 hour seminar on a subject entitled, "Appreciative Inquiry." I tried to dissuade her from doing this as I was completely confident that 400 Reform Executive Directors would never sit still for that amount of time. Boy was I wrong! Deborah had the crowd mesmerized with conceptual anecdotes and examples that when it was over, she received a standing ovation from this really tough audience. The conversation afterwards on her presentation dominated the rest of the conference and I have instilled in my staff over the years to google the phrase, ask questions if you have them, and practice the use of AI. Needless to say, Deborah has become a world renowned guest speaker being flown all over the world by large corporations to speak to them about a variety of topics. I have made it my mantra to practice Appreciative Inquiry, and I hope during this holiday season you will take a minute to learn more about this way of life and utilize it in your personal and professional life. I would welcome any questions or discussions from you, even a phone call or email to let me know you read my column! Have a wonderful holiday season, light that Menorah, enjoy your family, and remember I am always available to meet with you in person to discuss and listen to suggestions, comments, complaints or compliments. On November 2nd, Rabbi Josh Weinberg and ARZA along with Rabbi Rick Jacobs and the URJ, the Israeli Movement for Progressive and Reform Judaism, the Israel Religious Action Center, the World Union for Progressive Judaism, and Women of the Wall all came together for an incredible event. Men and women carried Torah scrolls into the women’s section of the Western Wall prayed and read Torah together. Standing strong in the face of physical and verbal harassment, in defiance of the ultra-Orthodox authorities who run the holy site, women were able to pray at the Kotel with a sacred Torah – For the First Time – EVER.

We hope you enter our Pot Luck Latke Contest for our Friday Night Lights event! Here is a simple, yet funky twist on the Chanukah favorite!

Apple Latkes Beat the egg with the yogurt and milk (or just the yogurt, if you're using the plain normal variety) and set aside. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and sugar in a bowl. Peel, quarter and core the apples, then grate them; you can use a food processor, but a coarse Microplane or other grater would work easily, I'd imagine. Pour the yogurt mixture into the flour bowl, tip in the grated apples and fold it together. Pour enough oil to come about 1/4 inch up in a skillet and put on the stove to heat. Dollop spoonfuls -- I use a round soup spoon -- of the apple batter into the sizzling oil; a rubber spatula (the one you used to fold the batter together) will help you scrape the batter off the spoon and press down on the little latkes in the pan. Don't worry about making perfect round pancakes; I like these a bit raggedy and skew-whiff. Fry for a minute or two, until the latkes are a golden brown on the undersides; you can see from the top as they start firming up underneath. Flip them with 2 metal spatulas and fry for another minute on the uncooked side. Remove to a tray lined with paper towels to blot the excess oil and continue cooking until you've used up all the batter. Top with maple syrup. More recipes at www.foodnetwork.com/recipes

EXCEPTIONAL CULTURE

by Design

Culture is a rich word, with many meanings. It can be a way of thinking and behaving that exists in a given place. It can be the act of developing the intellect through education. It can also be a refined taste in the arts and humanities. At Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, our culture is all of those things. From the social, recreational, and educational programs we offer, to our celebration of family through our affiliation with the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, everything we do is designed to create an exceptional culture that enriches all our lives.

Call (561) 922-7156 to learn more about the exceptional culture of Sinai Residences.
