The Kyoto Station is located on the Tokaido Shinkansen, linking Japan’s two largest business centers: Tokyo + Osaka

GENERAL INFO: Architect: Hiroshi Hara Year Built: 1997 Project Type: International Competition Height: 196ft Length: 1542ft

“The concept of the Kyoto Station Reconstruction Project is ‘Kyoto is a gateway to history’. Based upon this concept, the grid pattern (a characteristic of Kyoto’s street layout) is incorporated in the design. And the symbol of a gateway is created with the arrangement of V-shaped terraces spreading towards east and west, with the center as a large atrium space. The hot air and fumes are drawn through the roof, via louvres at the apex of each mogul, by the prevailing winds. Prevailing winds

Case study: Southern Cross Station, Melbourne Architect: Nicholas Grimshaw

The undulating roof is designed to expel diesel fumes from Southern Cross Station. While it is waterproof to the outside it 'breathes' internally, allowing smoke, diesel particles and contaminants to be discharged.

The individual roof moguls act as air reservoirs that collect hot air together with the train's diesel fumes.

Case study: West Kowloon Terminus, Hong Kong Architect: Aedas 3-hectar public green roof plaza: Taken into consideration the public’s aspirations for a green environment, coupled with the functions and interests that the terminus will bring to the public. The green roof plaza provides space for public leisure and improved air quality. In addition, the carefully designed pedestrian links encourage visitors to reach surrounding areas by walking, encouraging enjoyment of the green environment.

TRANSPARENT THIN-FILM PV CELLS

Solar Windows

What is it? Transparent photovoltaic cells can turn an ordinary windowpane into a solar panel without impeding the passage of visible light.

Case study: Beijing South Railway Station Architect: Terry Farrell and Partners Natural ventilation is a key feature of this building via the canopy roofs while the skylight provides daylight. Another major feature is the solar panel set up. There are over 3,000 panels generating electricity, as the structure spreads out like a 'ray', which covers over 8,000m² along the perimeter. This design serves to reduce CO2 output considerably.

Case study: Atocha Railway Station, Madrid Architect: Alberto de Palacio Elissagne

The station's vast central atrium space helps keep the station cool as the warm air travels upwards and escapes through the operable panels and the cool air stays on the bottom. The station also features a tropical garden that can be used to improve the air quality within the station and manage the level of CO2 emission.

What is it? Air is driven through the building by vertical pressure differences developed by thermal buoyancy. The warm air inside the building is less dense than cooler air outside, and thus will try to escape from openings high up in the building envelope; cooler denser air will enter openings lower down.

A main design consideration factor was the notion of movement. How to efficiently and effectively mitigate the different types of movement was a key in determining my design.

Ultimately, a station shoud function effectively. Therefore as a train station user, you require a direct and easy path of travel. However as a visitor or the general public you will have more time to pass through the station in a leisurely manner. These 2 different types of movement (direct & leisurely) should not conflict with each other, and therefore the strategy was to delaminate these layers of movement to effectively bridge various types of users through the station.
