IN PASSING ALTERNATE FORMS

OF SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

Project Brief: Architecture has traditionally been understood as a discipline highly tied to the physical reality. This thesis questions the idea of spatial permanence as the basis of design and as its only outcome. “In Passing” is an installation that aims to create an experiment in architecture’s capacity to produce alternate forms of spatial experiences and construction through the use of light as spacemaking material. By creating visual spaces with light’s untouchable essence, it encourages viewers to see in ways that are haptic - as if we can feel the light with our eyes. The qualities and sensations of the intangible are made tactile.

REENVISION UNION STATION CALIFORNIA HIGH SPEED RAIL: LOS ANGELES STATION

Project Brief: With the California High Speed Rail coming into Los Angeles, the historic Union Station area needs to be reenvisioned into a new metropolitan hub. The regenerated Union Station area will be packed with amenities and programs such that the new HSR station design should take on the role of an “Urban Connector” to bridge between these different programs as well as feed people in and out of the station into the greater city of LA.

The new urban node will be able to expand outwards and ultimately connect the various smaller urban nodes within Downtown LA to become a greater metropolitan hub.

VERTICAL GROUNDS SOCIAL PLATFORMS IN THE SKY, EVOLO SKYSCRAPER

Project Brief: The project functions as a vertical social platform for the merging forces of Culver City and the City of Los Angeles. Formally, the building reaches out one side to the metro Exposition Line Station, and the other towards downtown Culver City. The building is formed by four converging towers that meet as one - symbolic of the recognition of the fragmented nature of our current cities, Los Angeles in particular, thus the need to create a consolidated community and social platform that extends in the z-axis, rather than the traditional x and y-axis.

GLACE

PERFORMATIVE OBJECT: BENCH

Project Brief: The project objective was to design a bench that could fit 3 people sitting, and 1 person lying down using any materials and methods needed. The idea behind the“GLACE” benches is to create a versatile and lightweight prototype bench that can be easily replicated as units. These “units” can be arranged and rearranged in many ways to provide multiple unit configurations. The design of the GLACE bench is taking a simple rectangular form and by creasing and bending it to create a bench with an optical illusion of being hollow but is actually self-supporting.
