Play It Forward

//02//USER MANUAL MANUAL//02// Introduction We ask you listen with new ears— since much of what you will be experiencing will not fit your current world-view or

0frame of reference about performance. We challenge you to listen0as though this is your first conversation on performance. If we are successful, it will shift your world-view to a place from which you will experience more power. Consider this game unlike any other game you have played before 0 If you0make0the game like something you already know you will miss the opportunity to win.

Our Philosophy

Play:

As Thomas Edison famously0joked in response to a new employee's question about laboratory rules,

“There0ain’t no rules around here. We’re trying to accomplish something!!” In order to evoke transformational change, players must be willing to act as skeptics; questioning, being flexible, and disrupting normal behavior within the basic confines of the game. We have made a concerted effort to establish basic structures that allow the players the liberty and creativity to calibrate and add elements that would be beneficial to their group’s dynamics. “In every real man, a child is hidden that wants to play”0- Friedrich Nietzsche

People:

The game follows a peer productivity model, which naturally engenders a greater degree of

trust (and admiration). The game is a powerful demonstration of the good in people. We have observed perfectly honest upstanding people become unrecognizable by merely being committed to the success of others. Language affects the way in which what is being dealt with occurs to people. And the way what is being dealt with occurs to people affects their behavior towards the success of each other. As a byproduct, the team starts to speak as a unified voice. (If the game is going well, people can become a unified voice especially if they are winning their game)

Performance:

We provide actionable access to performance with no “in order0to”. 0 In this

game we do not manage people, we manage agreements. 0 We don’t tell people what to do we stand inside agreements.0 We provide players an opportunity to create space where they choose how they want their game to end. In a real sense this starts with believing that any given outcome is possible or not.

Facilitation of the Call Objective

* A safe space where players feel at home. * Exceptional Customer Service The Prime objective is to create:

* Fun and Laughter

Intention The contextual framework of the call is to create a warm, and related experience and is the responsibility of the facilitator. We assert that regardless of your level of development in the area of leadership, you are a leader who will emerge from being a facilitator as an expansion of who you know yourself to be in this area. In an eort to not make this more complex than necessary, we strive to keep this process organic with a light architecture to maintain the system of the game.

Relatedness A deep relatedness that generates the sentiments of family is the over arching goal. It should feel like you are speaking to friends from High School during the calls. Customer Service is king and the agility of the facilitator is to manage the ebb and flow of the conversation. The theory of group dynamics will always run its course throughout the duration of the game. Historically speaking, it is quite remarkable how eective the team becomes as it continuously coalesces. The bureaucratic model allows everyone to be involved, provides trust, and creates a safe space to share.

5

Play It Forward

What Will Make a Difference Clearing yourself before the call starts by asking yourself “What can I do to have my teammates feel safe and at home?” You have to manage whatever reactivates you. We request you listen to the discourse from the perspective of whomever is speaking at that particular moment, and how you as the facilitator can make a difference for that person. Mastery in time management is necessary. Everyone needs to have time to share in the time frame allotted for the call. Most importantly, you must create the space for each person to feel empowered to share, transform and stand for each player’s integrity inside the game. The game not only impacts its players, it produces a ripple effect that reverberates through the world. Families shift! Work places shift! A WORLD shifts! Let’s Go!

Call Architecture Pre-Call 1.) Clear yourself by figuring out what needs to be provided for the call. Noreen Sumpter Thursday, 8:20 PM Added Text Noreen Sumpter Thursday, 8:19 PM Added Text

2.) Arrive on the call early 3-5 minutes before the call starts so that call starts on time . Set an alarm for at least a few minutes before the call so you're the first one on it. (You'll hear music until the first person joins call.

4.) Arrive on0the call early 3-5 minutes before the call starts so that call starts on time .

The Call 1.) Start the call on time 2.) Take attendance as each member arrives on the call. Check them off on your list. Note those that are not on the call and have someone text that individual if they have not previously communicated their absence. Play for 100% attendance everyday of the game. 3.) Ask everyone their statistics for the day prior. 4.) Ask n question and hand pick someone to answer it.

6

Play It Forward

5.) Use the integrated round-robin method by calling on each player to "go next". It is recommended that the order of sharing change each day and be managed by you (vs. asking, "Who wants to go next?"). If you open the space for "crickets" on the line, valuable seconds could add up to minutes or more during the life of the call. That said, consider asking if anyone has anything else to contribute after someone speaks and before moving on. Move on after you count to three (in your head while waiting for someone to raise their virtual hand). 6.) If there is any business to be handled on the call, request that one person to be your partner to be sure the call does not end before you handle "X" that day. Give them permission to interrupt/remind you two minutes before call ends. 7.) Make notes when someone is sharing for you can give the best feedback possible. 8.) Call time is no more than 30 minutes in length. Regardless of what is occurring on the call at the 30 minute mark, declare that the call time has ended. If something is occurring that needs to be completed prior to call end, determine that the call is in “overtime and release all that need to leave for prior commitments. Request that all players stay that can do so, to create a support for the unfinished business.

Cheat Sheet Potential questions you might want to ask the group to enliven the call. What occurred yesterday from playing the game? What can you do today that will take you from being awesome to over the top extraordinary? What part of your game is disturbing you the most? What have you learned about yourself so far through playing the game? What part of the structure of the game is working for you the most? What happen yesterday that you want to share? How would you grade your performance so far? Identify at least one ideal or standard that you have in life and that you use to evaluate your own and other’s performance?

7

Play It Forward

Is there any part of your game that you need to restore integrity? What are some dominating thoughts you carry with you day in and day out? Examples are: Life is too hard; I’m not a lucky person; I’m too old. What’s your bread and circus? Where could you have given more of yourself? Where have you given more than what was expected of yourself in this game?

Play It Forward Culture Pla-ork We assert that it is imperative to incorporate a healthy dose of fun into how one performs the actions of the day. We encourage the players to try new things throughout the process. If we use the context of play rather than work we will find more fun in the process. Most people get stopped at the start. Being in a state of fun increases the plausibility of an outcome being manifested. When we are having fun we are too busy to bask in the cascade of failure. From our experience when someone works from the state of fun others start to relate to them newly. The environment in which they work welcomes this newly found positive energy and rubs off on others as a byproduct.

Victimization Victimization is not allowed. Any envisioning of negativity becomes a direct conflict of one’s day to day performance. Handholding and tolerating a lack of performance is not in the structure of this game. Playing the game teaches the players to not be a victim to the circumstances of life, but rather to be productive in the face of those circumstances. The game is an opportunity to minimize the significance of your internal state.

You can’t fail if you keep playing “Nothing works unless you work it, and anything will work if you work it.” - Anurag Gupta. A fundamental aspect of the game is that no one has the right to fail. What we are talking about here is not a blatant disrespect for the rules, but to get clear on if the game that a player picked does not work for them. They should recommit to the existing game or declare a new game with velocity. If a player’s game ends up as a missed attempt, the player should applaud his or her own efforts. Identify the unworkability, and put what’s missing into the next game. Regardless of the unintended outcome of the game, if a player looks hard enough they will be able to generate satisfaction and value from their participation.

Group Dynamics Mechanics There are few experiences more empowering than getting a cadre of exceptional individuals together to play a game intended for all parties involved to win. When we embrace a unified vision inside a game of self-interest, we create an environment of mutual growth and prosperity. There is inherent complexity in mixing human beings together that have no background of relatedness. Having the group move through the phases of group dynamics is expected.

8

Play It Forward First the group forms itself. Cohesion is generated by seeking interdependence at the outset of the game. A “We are all in this together sentiment” creates interpersonal attraction. Once players realize that winning their individual game hinges on the success of the rest of the players winning their game, it secondarily enhances the connection. MLK remarked that “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”-MLK After solidarity and morale is established, there becomes a sentiment of not wanting to rock the boat. There is an easing and tip toeing which hits a firewall. Here the group starts to confront each other. All groups go through a storming stage. It’s a contentious and unpleasant phase within the game. Alternatively, it is the most critical phase in the maturity of the group. The team members will resolve their differences, which grants the members the liberty to participate more comfortably. A safe space is created, where

Jermaine Huell Today, 10:42 AM Added: Image

players can share freely without the risk of being judged. This gives the group reassurance. Out of the storming stage the group begins to create love and affinity for their co-players. The team begins to corral around one goal. The goal is that everyone wins. Once this is established we have noticed that groups start to perform at a extremely high rate. The team becomes competent, motivated, and loving. We notice the communication becomes so much smoother in this phase. It is paramount for the team to not get complacent because one hiccup can have the group recoil back to a more primitive stage of dynamics. Community: The team becomes a family. They depend on each other for mutual success. Agreements: The contractual agreements of the group set a benchmark of what’s excepted and actionable steps with which to hold each other accountable. Conflict: healthy debate that has the intent to leave everyone empowered can be an open source of new and better decisions and perspectives. Communication Skills: Players will learn to facilitate the group’s conversation, skillfully intrude, share, and offer advisement masterfully throughout the process of the game.

Play It Forward

Conclusion Everyday is an opportunity to perform. The world is your stage. Every performance has an audience and teammates that are on the court with them. Organizations measure productivity in terms of output per labor hour. We assert that a more impactful barometer isn’t quantitative, but qualitative. Every aspect of our life is an opportunity to be our very best self. A remarkable performance moves us to give a standing ovation. It sometimes moves us to tears. Some of our brightest stars perform regardless of how they feel. “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts. His acts being seven ages.” - William Shakespeare, As You Like It, Act 2, Scene 7. A passionate performer excites the crowd regardless of how he or she feels emotionally, physically, or mentally. They look at those pit falls as an opportunity to rise to the occasion. Michael Jordan once scored 65 points while having flu-like symptoms.
